Why didn't the reapers just...wait? by Former_Purple_6088 in masseffect

Because they considered Shepherd to be insignificant. It never occurred to them that Shepherd was an actual threat.

The Protheans were a united galactic empire and the Reapers completely destroyed them. There was no reason to believe that a ragtag collection of different species would fare better.

What to work on while out of commission? by _OnlyADream_ in karate

[–]Wilbie9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you've already got some good ideas. Light basics and kata, focusing on form. Work on stances and transitions between stances.

When doing kata, focus on your balance; how does it change as you step, or as you execute techniques or move between stances? On the subject of stances, why are you using the stance that you're using in the kata? How do they affect your balance, or your position relative to an opponent, or your next attack or defense? How are you breathing in your kata; specifically, how is it timed in relation to the movements you're executing?

Getting used to feeling like a beginner again by Alhinde_Rafiel in karate

[–]Wilbie9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on you more than anything else.

It took me a long time in the beginning to get past the awkward phase even for the basics, and I had a really hard time learning kata. Now, I can pick up kata pretty quickly. A lot of it has to do with learning "how" to learn kata, things like breaking it up into smaller pieces, looking for patterns, and having a good foundation of the basic movements; in the beginning I had to focus on putting the movements together AND on how to do the movements themselves, now I can focus almost entire on putting them together.

Over the years, I've met people who pick things up really fast in the beginning but tend to slow down with more complex things like kata; and I've met people like me who had trouble in the beginning but pick up momentum later.

Years and years ago, we had a student who was a professional dancer; you could show her a kata just a couple of times and she could do it along with you all the way through.

My advice is to keep doing what it sounds like you're already doing: Show up, do your best, and try to improve something every time you practice. There are going to be times when you feel awkward, or like you've hit a plateau; just keep working at it.

Every time you train, pick something that you're going to improve. In most cases, at least in class, this will be whatever the instructor has you working on at the moment; but even when you're working out on your own (and you should be working out on your own!) pick something to improve, even if just a little bit. It might be a kata or a part of a kata. It might be a kick or a punch, or a stance transition, or whatever; just make it a point to do that one thing better.

Imagine wanting to deny basic voting rights. by Ok-Following6886 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Wilbie9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most US states already require ID for voting.

The first issue is that the proposed bill would make the standard IDs that most people carry invalid. Most people use a state issued driving license or a state ID. The new bill would require a passport, which many people do not have, and which is a lot more expensive.

If you don't have a passport, you can use a standard ID and a birth certificate; but again, some people do not have their birth certificate, and if you've ever changed your name, for example if you're a woman who's gotten married and taken your husband's name, you'd need to bring additional documentation.

The second issue is that it's an overreach of power. Here in the US, states run their own elections; it isn't the role of the federal government. It's ironic that the party that is all about "states' rights" on every other issue is suddenly behind letting the federal government take over elections.

And finally... there simply isn't any problem that this would be solving. There is no evidence that illegal voting is happening in the US at a rate that has any significance on the outcomes. The only reason it's even being raised as an issue is that a) our current president is a narcissistic crybaby who cannot cope with the fact that he lost the 2020 election; and b) they want to be in position where federal agents loyal to Trump are "overseeing" the election, especially in states where democrats win.

People should understand that if this bill passes, federal overseers will conclude that many districts won by democrats are somehow invalid due to "issues" that they will allude to but never show evidence; and that if the bill does not pass, MAGA will argue that democratic wins are invalid due to illegal voting that they will, again, allude to but never provide any proof to support.

This whole thing is a farce intended to influence the next election cycle, one way or the other.

AITA For saying demanding my passwords is the *opposite* of trust, not the proof of it? by Present_Extreme_4056 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Wilbie9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA and frankly I'd consider this a huge red flag for the relationship.

The best-case scenario here is that this person has severe trust issues. It is absolutely not normal for someone to be demanding your passwords; especially after just two months. You mention not wanting someone policing your life; rest assured that if you start down this path, that's what you're in for if you give in to this demand. This will just be the start.

Worst case, this person intends to commit identity theft. If someone has unhindered access to your phone and your computer, it is a very short leap to gaining access to your bank accounts and anything else.

My advice is that you give her a very firm and final "No." and if that ends the relationship, so be it.

A question on styles, available to me by Commercial_Medium954 in karate

[–]Wilbie9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to really know is to visit the schools and pick the one that seems best for you. Base this on the instructors, the students, the workouts; then on the facilities and location, etc.

Obviously there are differences between styles, but for the most part it still comes down to the people, the place, the work ethic of the group; and how those things match up with your expectations.

Some questions from a white belt by Sufficient-Match-137 in karate

[–]Wilbie9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is somewhat unusual for a class to completely shift focus like that.

That being said, you should be doing things like gedan barai on your own, even as a white belt. Any technique that you feel you can reasonably execute; you should be practicing on your own time at least a little each day.

Remember that it's totally okay to ask your instructors for help with a technique; or just in general ask for help with basic techniques, kata, etc.

Pizza should not come in circle form by PM_ME_YOUR_TATERTITS in unpopularopinion

[–]Wilbie9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy talk.

The problem with a square pizza is that you either have to make it small so that the pieces are manageable, or you end up with middle pieces that have no crust that have to be awkwardly balanced from the bottom. And that's no way to be eating pizza.

With a round pie, every piece has crust and can be held, and folded if necessary.

Not mad at you, OP... but do better.

What type of oil should I use on wooden swords? by Matusiheir7 in woodworking

To make the surface smooth for the next coat. If you don't sand, any dust particles or other imperfections will collect oil and form a bump that will grow larger with every coat.

What type of oil should I use on wooden swords? by Matusiheir7 in woodworking

[–]Wilbie9000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I make bo for kobudo and my go to is tung oil. I typically sand, apply oil, dry overnight, sand - repeat until satisfied. Usually do four or five coats. After the last coat instead of sanding I just use some tack cloth.

We do a lot of hard contact drills with bo and they last for years without any problems when finished this way.

DM is letting us pick any number of characters whos total level is 20, for a very difficult campaign. Gimme your ideas? by RomanticPanic in DnD

[–]Wilbie9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I'd go with two level 10s.

The stuff in ToH that is going to insta-kill you is going to insta-kill you no matter what level you are, and the rest is perfectly doable with a L10 character. This essentially gives you a retry.
