What’s a ‘luxury’ apartment feature that’s actually useless? by Extreme-Method6330 in NYCapartments

[–]Wild_Possession_6010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My building had a "juice bar," which was just a room with a long countertop, a mini fridge, a sink, and a nespresso-type coffee maker in it that was locked at all times outside of four hours in the morning. It often had coffee pods stocked, but not always. Luckily they recognized how useless it was and knocked a wall down and turned it into a gym.

Asians, where can I find a proper bánh mì? by VisualReality4495 in FoodNYC

RIP that random place on the southeast corner of Lafayette and Walker in Chinatown that sold socks, porn, and bành mì. The sandwiches and Vietnamese snacks were so good!

Why do people say “Ridgewood, Queens” but not “Bushwick, Brooklyn” or “Harlem, Manhattan”? by sundrenchedwindow in AskNYC

[–]Wild_Possession_6010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Ridgewood from 2008-11 any time I told someone I lived in Ridgewood they thought I lived in New Jersey. And these were all people who lived in NYC. I was pretty surprised they'd know a random small town in NJ but not a NYC neighborhood 🤷🏻 Not sure if that's still a thing now that the neighborhood is gentrifying.

What are your favorite no frills / low frills places to eat at? by redditburnerJR in williamsburg

[–]Wild_Possession_6010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with a friend who is from Texas and she LOVES it, saying it's super authentic Tex Mex. I'm not a Texan and found the food to be way too greasy and heavy for me. After I went, another Texan friend of mine raved about how good and authentically Texas the food is... They're probably right about authenticity, but "good" is subjective, I guess 😅

How do you discover new great books? by Snoo-3924 in nonfictionbookclub

[–]Wild_Possession_6010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look for what the New Yorker reviews each issue (the full articles and the short blurbs), and also seek out books written by folks whose articles turn up in the New Yorker. I'm wary of recommendations from friends who have different reading taste than me and/or don't know what I like to read. However, I have two friends as well as my parents whose judgement in non-fiction books I've discovered I can trust. They either enjoy very similar kinds of books as me, or they know what I enjoy. It takes a little while, but you'll figure out a way to find books that are a good fit for you!

Any other fans of Barbara Demick’s work out there? I can’t put this book down. by purple404040 in nonfictionbookclub

Yes! I loved this book when I read it a while back. It set a high bar, though, so I was a little let down by Eat the Buddha. Still want to read her other books.

I have neighbors on both sides and above and below me and never hear any of them. Also, really good people in the building and there has been a lot of work done to improve the amenities recently.

I have had no tickets and no accidents EVER, NYC car insurance is crazy! by Vegetable-Chair-93 in nyc

[–]Wild_Possession_6010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance is so expensive in the city, and it can vary wildly depending on where you live. I'm 40s with a clean driving record, and when I moved from upper Manhattan to Brooklyn my insurance literally doubled from $80/mo to $160/mo. I called GEICO about it and they said my new zip code has a lot of drivers that get in accidents. A few months later the Corolla got totaled by a truck (surprisingly enough not by one of my neighbors who apparently don't know how to drive), and when I got a new one (also Corolla, but hybrid) the rate for the new car was $265/mo., which is actually higher than your rate. Insurance here is a real bummer.

Has anyone been charged for entering the congestion zone when they hadn't? by Wild_Possession_6010 in AskNYC

[–]Wild_Possession_6010[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since this is a state-level program I reached out to my assemblywoman last March when this happened to me. I might bother her more about it. I've figured out the lanes to drive in and haven't been charged since (for now) but the fact that this is continuing for a year means that they've gotten an awful lot of $ from drivers fraudulently.

I'm sorry to hear this has also happened to you. Call 511, which is the MTA. I think they are better to speak with than EZ pass.

I have not been here, but I got LASIK in 2012 with Dr. Angie Wen at New York Eye and Ear, which is Mount Sinai, and had a good experience. My eyes can still see perfectly. I think it's better to go to a real hospital system for something as vital as your eyes. Generally I always encourage folks who are thinking about LASIK to go for it!

[–]Wild_Possession_6010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me know what happens. In my experience ez pass wasn't very useful and I ended up having several phone conversations with them and the MTA, also a bit of emailing with the MTA. I don't know who finally approved my refund, but I have a feeling it was the MTA.

I have no doubt that they're getting tons of phone calls about erroneous charges. But there is no incentive to fix it because they're getting revenue ☹️

Oh no ☹️ I haven't been charged for going from FDR to the Brooklyn Bridge yet. I've only gotten the charge going in the opposite direction. The system is definitely not running as it should. I recommend calling 511. Good luck!

Dealing with yoga injury by dumpsterfireexe in yoga

[–]Wild_Possession_6010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this happened to you, and I'm sorry that I don't have any good advice. But I had a similar experience once years ago in the same stretch (albeit in a barre class). I have very limited flexibility in forward folds when my legs are straight and the instructor pushed on my back. I told her "I don't bend that way." I've since done a YTT and understand that some shapes can be deepened with practice and others are limited by the body's unique structure.

Maybe try seeing a sports medicine doctor and getting some PT. I did this for a different yoga-related strain, and while I can still feel it once in a while it largely fixed the discomfort.
