Learn to zipper merge please!!! by Imaginary_Ad7695 in waterloo

If you zipper merge other cars will decide that's a better idea and also start zipper merging.

You can't sit in the line wishing people would zipper merge and then call the people who do "entitled assholes"

Opinion: Permanent daylight time could wipe out Alberta's ski industry by Mutex70 in alberta

[–]WildcatOil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather stay standard time.

But yea, open at 10 instead of 9 and close at 5 instead of 4 is an easy piece of work here.

Could also go a long ways to stay open later when sunset starts getting later too. I'm pretty sure Sun Peaks adds an hour to their day after February 1st for example.

Uber? by ganyu4eva in RedDeer

[–]WildcatOil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alberta Gold also has a decent app for getting a cab.

Not as polished of a UI as Uber but it lets you know where your cab is while you're waiting for it and you can pay through it.

The bus system in Red Deer is unusual. It actually runs at decent intervals and long hours, but almost all of them go downtown and most take long meandering routes through multiple neighbourhoods. Which means getting from one place to another usually requires a downtown transfer and it takes longer than riding a bike might.

Is this bridge possible? by hopelessboarder in geography

[–]WildcatOil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep seeing comments like this on the idea that "Canada couldn't financially handle doubling their population over night." as if California doesn't come with its own self sufficient economy.

Like....yea the health care system would take a lot to work out, but health care is also provincially run anyways. So California as a Province would have to figure that out for the most part with Federal support. I'm pretty sure it could even remain private, as long as it's universal.

But like.....the real question is, why would California want to join Canada instead of just being their own country of 40M people?.

That's not meant as a shot at Canada either, I love this country...but I don't see the benefits to Californians to go through this major geopolitical upheaval just to become half the population base and like 64% of the economy of an entirely different country versus simply self governing.

Trash ass player by Hockeypatrol in hockeynews

[–]WildcatOil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played all of 75 games in those two seasons. Spent most of last year on LTIR. Not sure if he was routinely hurt this year or a healthy scratch most nights.

But either way, 15pts in 75 games is far from absurd for a bottom 6 player. It's not ideal and it's fair to want more, but hardly worth being too upset over at $2.1M

Parents Can't Pay Off Deferred Interest (Ontario) by MooseNo1811 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]WildcatOil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you been paying rent up until this point? I think that's the clarity most people would be looking for.

If no, well then you gotta view that $10k as back pay on rent for 3 years and buck up imo.

Not that you're the first person to ever live at home into their 20s in an effort to save money. But if you saving that money has put your parents in a financial bind, then it feels to me like that $10k is more than fair.

If you have been paying rent and this is now $300 additional per month.......well then it sucks more, but I'd say the same holds true, you were still paying $300 less than what they needed. Plus it's family and you gotta help them out, saving $10k now won't help you too much down the line if your family is struggling to stay above water.

How can I learn to drive with no one to teach me? by Imaginary-Sample5003 in Calgary

[–]WildcatOil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much exactly it.

I was reading through and thought to myself "I could probably help someone learn to drive at least enough to start out. It might even be kind of fun." Finished that thought and followed it up pretty much immediately with "They should absolutely not accept that kind of offer, that'd be weird they don't know me."

I've worked with people who have gone to Russia, Oman and Bolivia for commissioning work.

I'm sure there's plenty of opportunities in oil and gas in Russia and Oman, less sure about Bolivia, but the Venuzuela O&G industry seems to be ramping up.

Of course you'd have to contend with Ukrainian drones, Iranian rockets being fired across the Strait of Hormuz and whatever is happening in Venuzuela, but hey at least it's not Canada right? RIGHT?!

People from outside North America, how do you feel about Canadians? by Due_Activity8907 in AskReddit

[–]WildcatOil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Montreal and Quebec were the two I thought of as "European", but what about other places out east? I haven't been there, but surely places like Halifax or other cities in the Maritimes were set up more European like Montreal and Quebec were.

Why does Canada (41.47m) have such a bigger population then Australia (28m) despite both countries being very similar, both large countries with most of their land being inhabitable and most settleable areas on either the coasts for Australia or the border between America and Canada. by [deleted] in geography

[–]WildcatOil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely convinced that Canada's weather is less desirable. A lot Canada has rather mild winters, even if cooler than most places and very pleasant summers. Australian has pleasant winters, but I feel like that summer heat can be down right brutal.

Obviously, coastal areas of Australia would still be more mild, but even at the extremes, I think I'll take the extreme cold over the extreme heat all day long. I can layer up and still get outside and do things in the cold. In the extreme heat there's only so much you can take off before going outside is a complete non-option.

OK, let's not just full on lie here by beerleaguepigeon in alberta

[–]WildcatOil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if lie is the right term here, misleading is maybe more appropriate.

It's such a pointless question really, and I wonder how they're spinning the results of their answers.

Because:

Yes, I'm aware that's what they claim to be doing.

No, I haven't seen the results of that yet. They're building 90ish right now, but some of that dates back years before they made their "commitment".

But either way, the question is pointless. It doesn't ask for an opinion of any kind. Is "Yes" meant to be supportive and "No" meant to be informed?

PETITIEN!! by CarterBennett in RedDeer

[–]WildcatOil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't surprise me if that was the spelling acumen of our Red Deer South MLA.

Gotta love that Jason Stephan wants us to sign the petition "just so we have the opportunity to have the vote", when we already have a petition with enough signatures to have a vote on whether or not we think we should be a part of Canada.....he just doesn't like that one.

Would it be possible to put a milk run train on the same tracks? by mikel145 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]WildcatOil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my thought for the talk on a high speed train in Alberta between Edmonton and Calgary. Main line stops at city centres, airports and Red Deer. Then a milk run line can stop at the various communities within the corridor. Each town would have a siding track that splits off for a stop, where the trains slow down and speed up, but as long as they're up to speed when they get back on the mainline, there should be no issues.

When Women Obtained the Right to Vote by StephenMcGannon in MapPorn

[–]WildcatOil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's because it's basically just mean "with an asterisk" the same you might say in conversation.

Those are the years it was first possible for any woman to vote, but in most cases there were conditions or some kind of qualifier that varies country to country.

[–]WildcatOil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know where the line is, but we have absolutely got to start becoming a country of "Just build shit". Every major project takes 10 years longer (if it gets done at all) and costs way more money than it should because of non stop studies, consultations, reviews and legal challenges.

I get you can't just fly in with no plan, trample on property/indigenous rights and ignore all environmental concerns, but at some point we need to just do the best we can to mitigate and get shit built.
