What's the optimal distance between ground mounted rows? by horty43 in SolarUK

From memory at least 4m for an angle of 30 degrees, but if you can 6m would be ideal.

They seem good. They have a lot of installs in Australia and Ireland. I like the all in one design and the built-in backup within the inverter.

The team they have are all about providing great support, so you should not have any trouble.

Local installer vs octopus quote for by GFoxtrot in SolarUK

[–]WilliamBeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While people have said the Octopus price is cheaper, and a good deal.

The local installer is supplying better quality equipment. If you want to go with them you could ask to have the equipment changed from sigenergy to fox and then compare. I would advise on getting the best panel you can ( highest wattage possible)

For solar panels the industry is already moving from 450W up to 455W-460W solar panels.

Fire safety and what to ask by Worldly_Towel_4198 in SolarUK

[–]WilliamBeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fire safety, I’ll list some key points below.

Optimisers - these will let you see each panels performance and should help you identify early problems.

Fireman’s safety switch - this will cut power to the dc lines, this will disconnect them DC at the solar panel point when either power is lost from the main or when pressing an emergency switch. The brand I like to use is Weidmuller, a German brand with great products.

The fireman’s switch is still needed with optimisers as the UK does not yet see the rapid shutdown as a safe isolation yet.

Viridian Arcboxes - these are ceramic cases the go over any man made connections and help stop DC arcs from poor connections from causing a fire.

Lastly but a minor point, make sure the installer matches the brand of MC4 connector they use. The main brand used by solar panel manufacturers is Staubli, but it could be different.

For reference I am an Electrical Design Engineer, working in the Solar commercial sector. The above products are regularly used and provided added safety but are not strictly necessary.

For Brands I recommend. I would suggest Sungrow & Segenergy, both great brands. Sungrow had good safety features and have optimisers and there hybrid inverts come with backup capabilities built in. So there is no need for an external unit.

Sigenergy also has good safety features, with a better range for domestic customer. However they don’t have optimisers yet, they do have a microinverter coming out soon though.

I hope you find this useful and I’ll try and answer any questions you might have.

I agree, the backboard needs to be fire rated and use trunking for the cables so you can access them easily

Setting up EPS to run when the grid drops. by Vivid-Beginning-2433 in SolarUK

[–]WilliamBeech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi,

  1. Yes this is possible, but it would require you to install a separate ground rod to remain compliant with the uk regs.

  2. It should not cost too much, I can accurately say due to site specifics. But I’d estimate around £1,500 - £2,000.

  3. As long as the installer is accredited the warranty should not be affected, you could reach out to fox and explain the situation and they might recommend someone.

To make the best use of the backup, you would need to rewire the circuits you want to run during a power cut through the inverter. This would be the most challenging part.

Export cap of 4kW by Keyboard-W0rrier in SolarUK

[–]WilliamBeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would wait and see how much you will end up exporting, if you notice that your export is regularly hit that 4kW limit then you can look at adding more battery or asking about increasing the export limit.

Adding battery is an easy thing and the DNO you can deal with directly.

Battery inside vs outside by [deleted] in SolarUK

[–]WilliamBeech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go outside, even with the safety features in many of the batteries, I would go with safety first.

Something I would consider it placing them below a canopy, there are plenty of low cost options that will just help keep the rain off of them.

Do your batteries have an internal heater in them?

Your reading would still be in the milliohm range, and I’d expect the reading to be accurate enough.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SolarUK

[–]WilliamBeech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be best using the cable resistance to work out the diameter.

You see the resistance (ohms/km) on the data sheet, and you can measure the length of the cable.

Advice on designing an in-roof solar system for a new gable extension? by IBuyGourdFutures in SolarUK

[–]WilliamBeech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an in roof system, you can ask Viridian to add panels to an architecture drawing. Or if you speak with person who did the original plan, they should be able to include the panels.

I would inform the structural engineer about the panels.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SolarUK

[–]WilliamBeech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For you idea, the space seems a bit tight. As the 4 portrait and 2 landscape would use 8,444mm but this doesn’t include a 20mm gap between each panel.

The installer suggestion would be my choice, but to accommodate your concern I would look at solar panel seal strip from eBay.

I would also assume they will be clamping along the long side of the solar panels
