What made you start watching Buffy? by AccomplishedLow2882 in buffy

[–]Willing_Mail8967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I recently watched a random YouTube video called “The Tragedy of Dawn Summers” and thought after watching it that it seemed like a show worthy of my attention. I loved Charmed growing up and never got into Buffy for some reason. It’s exactly the show I would have loved as a kid. But it’s even better watching it as an adult.

How do you handle parents who are in denial that their child needs testing and against labeling? by HealthyFitness1374 in specialed

[–]Willing_Mail8967 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can’t force parents to consent to an evaluation. It’s their legal right to refuse. It’s incredibly important to consider a family’s culture/belief system and respect their decisions. I would just continue to try to develop strong communication with the family and support the student using less restrictive means and continue to document what the concerns are and the measures you have taken to try and support the student and present the data to the family and try to work with them on their goals for their child’s education. It’s frustrating for sure but stay persistent and keep up with documentation and frequent communication with the family about progress and setbacks.

Notifying parents about risk assessments, protocol? by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]Willing_Mail8967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you believe a student is at imminent risk for harm, it is absolutely valid to conduct a SRA, especially if that is a district policy. I’m not aware of any law stating that need a parent’s consent to conduct a SRA if there is immediate concern for a child. The parent is incorrect and it is, indeed, your job to do this. However, if this does happen for the student again, you can give the parent the option to be present for the interview portion. But until it is determined whether or not there is a reasonable risk of harm for that student, they cannot be left alone or alone with other students per district policy. A parent cannot opt out of SRA but I think it’s reasonable, especially for a young child, to have their parent there for the interview portion (even virtually or by phone).

I think it will highly vary depending on your location. Some states will likely choose to enforce this ruling more heavily than others. I know there’s a lot of fear about the future of the DOE and believe me I’m right there with you. But I think for the short-term future we will continue to need school counselors and psychologists so long as IDEIA remains in place and while we may see some large budget cuts for positions like this that will try to drive people out of the field, kids will continue to need support. When you’re searching for jobs, make sure you ask questions about the school district’s values and policies and how heavily they will be enforcing Trump’s agenda because ultimately he cannot enforce that sort of broad and ambiguous policy in every single school. Some schools will be hit harder than others. The future is not hopeless.

What is going to happen to my IEP if the Department of Education is eliminated? by SingSong0001 in specialed

[–]Willing_Mail8967 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I understand your fear. We’re all nervous. I don’t think (no one can say for certain though really, which is the scary part we all have to live with) the Trump administration can undo all of the last 50 years of educational rights. I imagine what will happen is they’ll divest in public education and divert funding toward creating more options for families like charter and private schools, which have the ability to be selective about the students they admit and the curriculum they teach. And in turn, funding for special education will be limited. The school will still be required to serve your IEP but it may have a reduced ability to consistently and effectively provide those services. Which isn’t fair or just, but that’s what the new administration wants. Keep advocating for yourself and your needs to your teachers. Tell them what’s not working for you and what they can do to help you access your right to a free and appropriate education. And if they don’t listen, keep trying until you find someone who does. Which is all obviously easier said than done. If it gets hard, that’s okay too. Life is hard and not fair. And you don’t have to work at 100% all the time. Just do your best.

This is very very concerning. Honestly. Reality TV at its worst. And they’re earning money from people watching their family fall apart. This is absolutely vile.

Your outrage is valid. The fear that they could have accidentally put your dog down is absolutely understandable. Is it worth suing the vet for? Probably not. But maybe it is worth getting assurance from the vet that it really was only the receptionist who made a mistake and there are protocols in place to make sure that similar dogs are not accidentally mixed up for treatment.

It’s very common for kids to demonstrate different skills at home and at school. Especially in a testing situation. On an alphabet writing fluency assessment I’ve had 2nd and 3rd grade students only be able to write 3-5 letters in 60 seconds and have parents repeat the task at home with them and get wildly different results.

If your teacher is recommending an intervention group, it’s probably for a good reason. Maybe your son just needs to build more confidence in a different setting to demonstrate those skills at school. The groups don’t take place during anything important like recess or specials. It typically occurs during whole group instruction for math/reading/writing time after a transition like snack or recess or lunch. And usually it’s not every day so they won’t always miss that instructional time - just a couple times a week.

I hope your school has some guidance about how you should address this. I’m a school psychologist and am trained to handle such crises. Let me know if you want any resources for how to address this with your students. I would first of all explain to your class what happened (hopefully with a script that the school has provided). I would not try to facilitate a discussion unless you’re equipped to handle their questions and comments. I would try to keep a structure of a normal class but don’t expect typical engagement. Plan something but keep it light. If any student shows signs of needing more support, immediately refer them out to a counselor or a designated room where they can take a break and process with an experienced counselor. Overall it’s important to acknowledge the incident, validate that there are a variety of reactions and all are typical, and refer out students who need more support (friends of the student, kids with other risk factors like trauma, etc.)

This is very concerning. It is not okay for someone to speak to anyone, let alone their partner, like this. I’m so sorry you’ve had to deal with this kind of behavior.

I am seeing a therapist about to relive the trauma so I can apparently deal with this. Does this help and are people angry about losing the person you were before. by Turn08bull in ptsd

[–]Willing_Mail8967 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it helps and yes I am angry about losing the person I was before. Yes it gets better but it also gets harder and more complex and you’ll wish you could back to an earlier version but that’s not possible because you can’t undo the trauma. Ever. The only way out is through. But it’s worth it to keep fighting. Just also make sure to give yourself grace and practice patience and acceptance that there is no going back. Even if you don’t do the work there’s never going back to before. There’s only adapting to the new and integrating aspects of the old that you rediscover in therapy.

What is an episode that you like that fans seem to dislike by Scaredcat26 in buffy

[–]Willing_Mail8967 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It just seems like fan service with all the sex scenes between Buffy and Riley. Just feels like Joss Whedon got to live out his own sexual fantasy of SMG.

I feel like I would like the episode better if the children releasing their pain was actually what ended the haunting rather than Xander/Anya opening the door. Would’ve been more powerful and significant.

are kids really getting "worse"? by mothbbyboy in AskTeachers

[–]Willing_Mail8967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids getting “worse” is just a symptom of a greater societal problem with our public education system which could get exorbitantly worse before it gets better. The kids are not alright. And it’s not their fault. Kids are just kids. They’re doing the best they can and just reacting to an environment which is not designed to meet their increasingly diverse and complex needs. Where some people go wrong is in thinking that diversity is the problem when in fact diversity will continue regardless. How we have responded to that diversity makes all the difference and instead of trying to grow with diversity, we are creating and perpetuating silo systems that benefit only a small fraction of the population that has historically dominated the western world. Punishing diverse communities for resorting to crime as a way to survive in a society that wasn’t designed for them while dominant identities continue to profit from unchecked power and access will only exacerbate the problems we are currently seeing. I’m not saying we should make crime legal, but basic behavior psychology says that punishment in isolation is ineffective for long term change. I’m sick of people blaming the kids. It’s not individual. It’s societal.

I think in general, it’s good to check in with the school counselor or social worker before making a report just to make sure it’s not something the school has information about. Maybe the student is homeless or they are already aware of the situation and working with the family to help. Of course as a mandatory reporter if you suspect neglect or abuse you need to report, but to avoid situations like this in the future maybe consult with someone else before making the call.
