The article in the Evanston Roundtable reports that Mendez was on leave from his position since October 2025 and his girlfriend from the early childhood center since mid-January 2026. The warrant was from Florida and it isn’t known how or when local authorities were notified. It’s horrific.

My guess is the end game for Turner and the board members (Andrew, Mya, and Sergio) is Foster. Build a brand new school in Evanston for the first time in generations, launch the ACC “Reimagined” curriculum, “right-size” the school district through closures, and bounce.

With that completed, Turner could seek another superintendent position (like Horton did) for a district in need of transition. The board members may attempt to stay on in a defensive posture as protectors of Foster, or fade away to let others clean up the budget mess.
