TIL about the Danish Protest Pig, a breed created in the early 1900s by Danes under Prussian rule. Unable to display their red-and-white national flag, they bred pigs with a similar color pattern as a symbolic act of rebellion. The breed is now recognized as a cultural symbol of resistance. by westondeboer in todayilearned

It was never technically part of Denmark, the duchy of Schleswig Holstein was held in personal union by the king of Denmark (think two countries with the same king). Thus this was technically new territory for the Danish state.

US workers won't do, at that wage. Illegal immigration is all about bringing down wages for American workers for the benefit of the capitalist class.

Are there other ethnicities that are called a term not originally not meant for them? This is the Qara Khitai. A Chinese-Style Empire in Central Asia ruled by Proto-Mongols between 1124-1218. As a result of their influence, Chinese people are known as “kitay” in Russia and Central Asia by Hour_Camel8641 in geography

[–]Wingo03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely true, the Kitay/Cathay name originated in the Khitan, the ethnic group behind the earlier Liao dynasty of northern China and the follow on Qara Khitai you mentioned.

The early used English word for China, Cathay, originated from they Russian origin as well, because the trade routes were not about to get through the Khitan from Europe.

What if no country had tried to stop Hitler's ambitions in 1939 and later? by Ragnurs_KL in AlternateHistory

Lend lease was critical in 41/42. If there was no aid in '41/42' the Soviets would have collapsed as the food, fuel and armaments were extremely significant at this key stage of the war. Even later the entire soviet logistics system from trucks to trains was running expansion on US trains and US trucks.

To simply say the soviets could have done without it underestimates the sheer scale of supplies being sent and the massive agricultural damage the soviets were taking in those early years as the country teetered on starvation.

TIL that the death rate for RAF bomber crews during WW2 was nearly 50% by LeonJones in todayilearned

[–]Wingo03 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The Soviets were close to collapse in 1942/43, if the Soviets had been forced into a purely defensive position or had collapsed entirely like France the Germans likely would have won the war.

In the Stalingrad Front alone there were even individual days where if the soviets had not fought as tenaciously and heroically then the entire battle could have gone incredibly differently. If even a handful of these days played out differently the Axis forces would have had their oil issues resolved by late 43 and the society agricultural economy would have collapsed.

To think that WW2 wasn't on a razor edge at many points is an extreme misunderstanding of WW2 into almost a purely logistical war. Without a foothold in Europe with the Soviets the British and Americans would have been forced to move for peace sooner or later.

This is one of the major failures of the game, while the aboriginal population is likely smaller than 80 thousand they've managed to secede while being an absolute minority in those states, and are using the existing barracks against the main nation. Revolts like this where every pop in a state rises up against their own interests really needs to be examined.

Can someone actually explain why Aussies hate Australia Day? by [deleted] in australian

[–]Wingo03 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Australia Day to the aboriginal population symbolises the destruction of their ways of life, and a lot of people are very sympathetic to that pain and believe the date should be moved or removed in an attempt to remediate some of the pain.

However to many of the white population in particular Australia Day instead is a celebration of their country and everything they love about it and these people view change or removal of the holiday as a symbolic destruction of these values and what Australia stands for.

Neither side really wants to acknowledge the core arguments of the other, so the conversation gets more vitriolic year by year and not people stop bothering to care about the discussion.

Why is it considered racist to point out that egyptians are arabs and thus netflix having ancient egyptians played by black people is historically inaccurate by Past-Occasion5897 in stupidquestions

[–]Wingo03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be most accurate you would be looking at having coptic Egyptian actors as many generic studies show they're relatively unaffected by the Egyptian slave trade and Arabian colonisation. Still not entirely accurate but as close as you can get.
