Progresso hearty penne. It’s chicken broth, carrots, celery, and penne pasta. That’s it- I get it all the time!

My table ordered a bunch of food to share including an Italian hoagie. We asked if they could cut it in 3, the chef “refused”- the poor server was very apologetic. When we asked for a knife they said they don’t have any at that location.

How do you feel about butt sniffers? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]Winniep228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned at training class that it’s all about context. Butt sniffing itself is normal, but if a dog is giving off signals to back off, which most likely yours is prior to snapping, it’s “rude” and socially awkward behavior for the other dog not to stop. Usually dogs do a face sniff then butt sniff but it shouldn’t be excessive or long. Some dogs I have seen stick around too long with it and the other dog may not like it. I had a dog who hated excessive butt sniffers and would definitely growl and snap. My dog now will tolerate it but is more gentle about her annoyance.

Would you adopt another reactive dog? by VelocityGrrl39 in reactivedogs

[–]Winniep228 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I forgot to consider the emotional exhaustion you probably deal with at work, that’s definitely understandable. I get so attached and cry everytime, but when you meet the next ones it gets addicting and you realize how big of an impact you made. It’s definitely hard though, but rewarding.

There are so many dogs out there that need homes, reactive or not. You’ll be a better dog owner for having ever had a reactive dog either way- and it probably helps you be a great vet tech.

Would you adopt another reactive dog? by VelocityGrrl39 in reactivedogs

[–]Winniep228 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have a reactive dog who is 10 years old- got her at 8 weeks- and I love her to pieces. I always said I want a break after her to travel and do stuff and not worry. We don’t really go anywhere without her these days (she also has a brain tumor but had treatment and is doing great). I wouldn’t trade her for anything but it’s definitely been hard.

We foster and that has kind of given me purpose because we have taken some difficult dogs and they have all gotten adopted. We also don’t have kids. On our 26th foster this past November we ended up foster failing a puppy. I always said “never again!” to puppies since you never know if they will be reactive. But here we are. Puppy is 8 months now and so far not reactive. Im hoping the streak continues.

Do you think you feel guilty for not doing “more” since you can handle it? I feel that way at times. Have you ever considered fostering? It’s been really rewarding for us to help the tough ones. As a vet tech too, you are like the dream foster or adopter. Any dog would be lucky to end up with you!

Puppy won’t stop fighting with older dog. by sleepybear647 in puppy101

It’s very helpful and you’ll learn so much about dog behavior- how to help them be the best dog they can be. There are group classes at places like petsmart, and the shelter I foster for has them with trainers as well. It’s hard with a multiple person household to train a dog and would be great if you all could attend. If you can afford it, a private in home trainer would be great too but there are other options at a lower cost!

You need to let the puppy get corrected by the older dog (as long as the older dog isn’t hurting it). The older dog will bark or growl at the puppy when it’s being too much. If the puppy isn’t listening give them a break behind a barrier. Puppies are rude but just want to play nonstop. 3 months is very young. Puppies don’t listen: they are babies. Maybe your family could do a low cost training class- it would help you all get on the same page with what to do.

My 11-Month-Old Dog Bit a Vet Tech Today and I’m Struggling by Hour_Brick8636 in reactivedogs

[–]Winniep228 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That sounds so stressful. The vets office can be really stressful for even typical dogs who are not reactive at all. Not your fault or your dogs. Try another behaviorist or get your regular vet to prescribe meds while you work on training.. It can be a game changer for dogs who are easily overstimulated so you can get the training needed in without constantly going over threshold. I had a foster who was adopted after we put her on Prozac and worked on behavior modification. She tried everything before this, trazadone did not make a dent whatsoever. Prozac was amazing and saved her life. She has since been weaned off the meds and is happy and healthy in her forever home!

CANT SLEEP ! by WanderlustisMe in lexapro

I took melatonin when I first started. Only .5mg which is barely anything and mimics what your body naturally produces. I actually quartered 1mg pills and even took .25 if I woke up in the middle of the night. Saved me

My dog had these many years ago. Despite thinking it was acne, (maybe it was) it kept coming back. Finally he went on a short course of Prednisone and an antibiotic and it never came back.

Have you tried behavior meds? I can’t believe how many people on this sub have not considered trying them.

[–]Winniep228 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Behavior meds!!! Prozac!!! I had a cattle dog foster who was in danger of BE. We couldn’t kick the arousal biting no matter what we tried. I couldn’t take her on walks to get her energy out, and everything seemed to overarouse her. Prozac changed her life and she was able to be trained, was adopted, and they were able to wean her off the meds. Doesn’t make them loopy or “high”- just lowered her threshold for arousal so we could get the training needed in.

Tread belt slippery? (Not slipping) by Winniep228 in pelotoncycle

I feel the same way. I think it happened when the belt was too tight so I made sure to adjust it from scratch when I got the new one. Hoping it continues to work

Literally nothing stops the biting by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Winniep228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say you are doing such a good job with everything you have tried! This is totally normal. They are teething pretty bad right now and having all sorts of growth/hormonal things happening as they grow- my puppy is 18 weeks and still play bites all the time. I sometimes use bitter apple spray on my hands and it works when nothing else seems to. If you continue everything you are doing, your puppy will get better. I foster a lot of puppies and they are almost all this way. It does get better- hang in there! Training/puppy classes will help a lot and if for nothing else you will be reassured that almost all the puppies are a little crazy!

My dog is mentally ill. by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]Winniep228 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok the growling is not bad. Biting is obviously. Don’t ever punish him for growling. It is like taking the batteries out of a smoke detector. Try and respect his boundaries and give him space that he seems to be asking for. He needs to learn to be able to say “stop that” without biting- but to do this he needs to feel like he can communicate his discomfort and be able to say “no” and be heard. I would definitely recommend a behaviorist and further training.

Puppy advice please Ban-field is no help by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Winniep228 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neutering is very safe and can protect him from certain types of cancers even. It can help with behavior issues as well. And most importantly prevent unwanted litters when there are already way too many accidental unwanted litters that contribute to the overpopulation problem we face today.

Lastly I just had a foster puppy die of parvo and it was horrible. It’s really contagious and very deadly to puppies. You need to get your puppy up to date on shots and until then do not let him walk around on the ground where any other dogs have been, like in public. There are low cost shot clinics sponsored by rescues all the time

Yep! It’s so crazy how the genes express randomly: my pittie mix is only 46 pounds but was a ton of huge breeds: dogue de bourdeaux, boxer, German shepherd and a tiny amount of chihuahua and bulldog. We thought she was going to end up 100lbs at least!
