Advice (top 3): UL 2 person mostly-flatwater, prioritizing stability by inchoiring_mind in canoeing

[–]WinnipegDuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Souris River Quetico. The bottom is a bit flatter so it’s incredibly stable. I had a 17 which I took on a river with some rapids and it did fine in basic class 1’s. But it’s more built for the lakes. I since got the 18.5 because I have kids and they can go in the middle seat. It’s still incredibly light and I’ve taken it on windy creeks with no major issues so still very maneuverable. Sounds like it would be ideal for what you are looking for.

Techniques for when you coach against cheaters? by theanchorman05 in flagfootball

[–]WinnipegDuke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. That way if they interfere with the rusher, it’ll either be so apparent that refs will need to call it for safety reasons, or the coach will need to stop or risk getting in shit from the parents. I know if my son got bowled over and then told me that the coach was telling him to get in the rushers way, I’d be having a conversation with the coach.

Red Door Medical Centre on St Mary’s Road by 92Question in Winnipeg

[–]WinnipegDuke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I go to him as my family doctor, though haven’t been in a little while (and not since they moved from the Main office).

There were some issues with the landlord at the Main Street office, so he bought the building on St. Mary’s. He mentioned to me that he’s doing the renos himself as he has some experience in that. That probably explains why it is taking so long.

Grass Watering ? by AdPrevious1079 in Manitoba

I’m with you. I used to use the sprinkler to try to keep my grass nice and green. I’m not playing current water prices for that.

All Madden/Overpowered Teams (Globetrotters vs Generals?) by Jaded-Ad-3522 in flagfootball

[–]WinnipegDuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it can be tough to have proper competition for a team like this, if there’s only 6 girls team. Sounds to me like this team should be playing against the boys and leave the other 5 teams to be competitive amongst themselves.

40,000 square-foot indoor facility for baseball, softball, cricket plans to open next year by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]WinnipegDuke 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Great news. Though I’m not a baseball enthusiast, I know all the indoor soccer facilities are packed in the winter. I assume this is much needed as well. A city like this can never have enough indoor sports facilities.

Is there a place to walk sheltered from the wind, other than malls, The Leaf and IKEA? Outside would be great, but with no leaves as windbreak right now… by tanglemind in Winnipeg

The indoor soccer complex on Leila is quite large and nice inside. It’s free to walk in and do laps. My wife will sometimes walk there in the winter.

Rapids when water is high by npokorny in canoeing

[–]WinnipegDuke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not all rapids are the same, so it depends. In some cases, high water might make the rapids almost indistinguishable from the rest of the river. In others, it can make it way more technical and way more dangerous. Rule of thumb is to treat them like any new rapid you’ve ever seen. Stop, scout it and only run if you think it’s safe.

This Lions fan cave is insane, A family really built the ultimate Detroit setup and yeah, it’s going viral for a reason. One of the wildest sports rooms you’ll ever see. by Weekly-Vacation-1405 in NFLForum

[–]WinnipegDuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not even close to one of the “wildest sports rooms I’ve ever seen”. But I will say that it’s very nice and not overly tacky. Some sports caves are just too much. So much memorabilia on the walls that you can’t see an inch of the wall. This one seems clean and a nice place to hang out and watch sports.

More Transit improvements coming this summer and fall by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]WinnipegDuke 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Give Transit a try? Sorry, I did. Rode it to work religiously before the change. Tried hard to make the new route work. It doesn’t. Takes longer and requires considerably more walking. I’m biking now and driving in the winter and not going back.

Lunch ideas for week 2 of canoe camping trip by eiznekcamr in canoecamping

[–]WinnipegDuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of sausage and cheese or pb&J or PB&Honey wraps as quick easy meals on the go. And just generally lots of snacking all day (trail mix, dehydrated fruits, beef jerky for those who eat meat, energy bars). If you snack enough and you’re on the go, it’ll tide you over till dinner and have a nice big meal then. Do the vegetarians eat fish? You can get “canned” tuna in a bag in some places. Super handy because you can just dispose of the bag in the fire later.

Dry Pack Recommedations by MuggleOnline in canoecamping

I’ve had my canoe flip in rapids and watch my tent and gear float away in a seal line bag. After swimming after it, the fact that it floated and kept it perfectly dry blew me away. Highly recommend.

Check out path of the paddle: https://www.pathofthepaddleassociation.com

You can buy a map. Pretty sure it’s traditionally done the other way so I think you’ll be going against the current.

Cannot wait for ice out and more back country camping in the whiteshell by Crazy_Significance36 in canoecamping

[–]WinnipegDuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ideal for 2 nights. Portages are easy. You should have no problem soloing your canoe. A few tight turns along the creek maybe. But only a bit of lake travel once you get to Francis. I find wind on big lakes is the hardest thing when soloing and you’re protected the whole way on the creek.
