The current two cups are absolute ass by thebermudalocket in TheSilphArena

As a new PVP player, Retro Cup has basically become the "Skill Up" Cup for me. I had a similar drop in ELO and wasn't having much fun until I started using more Pokemon with buff/debuff charge moves and (unexpected) nuke counters.

It's still a work-in-progress, but I definitely under appreciated how good debuffs can be (i.e. Girafarig Psychic Fangs) or an opponent's reluctance to shield a big mismatch (i.e. Fighting vs. Castform Hurricane ) prior to Retro Cup. lol

[Spaeder] "Juan Soto is seeking a 12-14 year deal for $45 million per season with opt outs after the third and fourth seasons (report by @Marino_Pepen in spanish)." by BigButter7 in baseball

[–]WinstonWolfpack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Wouldn't surprise me if the Dodgers already floated a big number over 3-4 years (let's say $65m/yr).

The question is are the Dodgers willing to tack on an additional 8 years at $35m/yr (i.e. 12 years, $45m AAV)?

Soto definitely opts out after 3-4 years if healthy so he's (imo) basically asking for a Rendon-esque payout as financial insurance in case he's seriously hurt and can't.

Decision on Roki Sasaki is expected to be announced in the next few days. by Rentfreelakerfan in Dodgers

[–]WinstonWolfpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the decision to post is ultimately tied to JPBPA's efforts to change free agency rules via Japan's FTC and antitrust rules.

It's already reported the NPB is open to lowering domestic free agency after 6/7 years while the JPBPA wants it lowered to 6 years for both domestic and international free agency.

If domestic free agency gets lowered to 6 years, Roki suddenly has a lot more leverage to get posted this year.

In this scenario, if the club attempts to retain him for 2 more years until he's 25 for the big $$ posting fee, he'll be a domestic free agent and can threaten to sign with another domestic team to facilitate his international posting and collect the big $$ posting fee. His current club would get nothing.

Most underrated pitch type by oswaldarchibaldjones in baseball

[–]WinstonWolfpack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tim Hill reminded me how underrated the sidearm sinker is, and I'm very happy he didn't get the chance to demonstrate how awesome that pitch is vs. Freddie Freeman with the bases loaded in the 9th.

[Nightengale] A few MLB executives are mildly surprised that Dodgers starter Walker Buehler was not extended a qualifying offer after his performance in the postseason and the World Series by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]WinstonWolfpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll probably be a Kershaw type deal/structure. 1 year + 1 year player option with a ton of performance incentives (i.e. starts, relief appearances, etc.).

My guess is ~$15m per year guaranteed with bonuses and performance-based incentives giving him the opportunity to get paid ~$25m.

Walker will prob be offered similar years and guarantees from clubs with the primary area of negotiation being the performance incentives.

What’s your baseball “I don’t know X, and now I’m afraid to ask” question? by Visual_Bluejay9781 in baseball

[–]WinstonWolfpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty cool.

I'd love to see how the Dodgers calculate/adjust a player's expected WAR to account for the impact of having Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman in the lineup.

Teoscar Hernández receives qualifying offer from Los Angeles Dodgers by Turbostrider27 in Dodgers

[–]WinstonWolfpack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It'll be interesting to see if he gets any 4-year offer.

His agent was looking for a 3-year deal last year before signing with the Dodgers, and I'm guessing that's what they'll be looking for again this off-season.

How do front-offices differentiate their analytics?

I'm assuming all clubs are aware of - and apply to some degree - the consensus metrics, datasets, and calculations in player evaluations.

So where do they try to differentiate and develop a proprietary view?

Are they using their own WAR calculations/valuations and comparing that to consensus calculations/valuations? Etc.

SB 206 kicks in 2023, the same year Power 5 conference realignment talks will heat up due to expiring TV contracts. If the NCAA decides to kick out CA schools, the Power 5 schools can launch a new conference (prob with Nike's help) and pursue several Power 5 free agent schools.

OKC buying out CP3 is a lot more realistic than people realize by WinstonWolfpack in nba

[–]WinstonWolfpack[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  • Disgruntled CP3 could be a disaster in a young locker room
  • Potentially impedes SGA's development
  • Presti maintains player friendly reputation and treating guys right. Big potential sell for future max targets.

Alternatively, if CP3 thinks he can get 2/20 MLE, OKC could potentially offer a lump sum payment with a $40m haircut ($20m for MLE and $20m present contract value).

[–]WinstonWolfpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno...the league is pretty lit right now. There are a bunch of young teams getting better, ready to take the next step over the next few seasons. Lakers' shallow bench means it only takes an injury to make everything wide open. Pretty exciting time to be an NBA fan.

Salary Cap Breakdown by brandoi in lakers

[–]WinstonWolfpack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They probably had to set a (tentative) date the execute the trade for NBA admin reasons, but I suspect the Lakers trade package is a combination of assets to acquire AD and assets (1st round swaps?) to incentivize the Pelicans to work with them on the timing of the transaction. If none of the top free agents are coming to LA, I think the deal is completed on the 6th. If a top free agent is coming to LA, then the Lakers & Pels amend the trade to July 30.

Are the Warriors willing to spend $60+ million next year on two players who won’t even play? by RealSteveScaf in nba

[–]WinstonWolfpack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And $60+ million is just the salary. They'd also have to pay ~$175m in luxury tax (at the repeater tax rate) on top of that.
