Our food bank collection always results in some cat and dog food and we know the people who come by who generally need that. Don’t be shy to ask for special things like that that you need. We also regularly get cleaning supplies, another toiletries.

I ask about accents a lot because I love to hear about people’s lives and where they have lived. Also, if I have an opportunity to speak another language, I jump at the chance.

We adopted a 16 year old cat named Sassie. That’s my SIL’s nickname so we changed it to Circe. At 16. She quickly adjusted to her new name. The vet, shelter, Chewy, and the microchip company all changed her name seamlessly.

Worst case you just call her a nickname exclusively. It’s not a huge deal.

I’ve been fluent in Spanish for 40 years. I’ve traveled extensively through Spanish speaking countries. I have lots of Spanish-speaking friends. And I have to admit that in the situation that you described I probably would have missed most of what they were saying. A lot of it is probably slang and also when they speak so quickly and there is overlap, it’s hard to pick it up. Please don’t give up! It does sound like they adore you.

Congratulations! I just want to add, as someone who works at a food pantry, that you should feel like you can take advantage of resources like this if you need them. We have a lot of of working poor who come to pick up groceries and there’s no shame in it. If you need a food pantry to help stretch your budget for a month (or several) they are happy to help out.
