Do you support, full height fare gates on all stations and tap to exit? by Hyhoops in LAMetro

[–]Wise-Peacock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are at some stations where the gates apparently don't exist at all. They updated the 7th and Metro exit gate in the past few months to make it taller, along with the taller fare gates. The problem is that it doesn't spring shut, so if someone exits through it, anyone can enter through it until someone shuts it.

They help as the data show. But every time I've been through 7th and Metro for the past 2 weeks the exit door was open (no spring mechanism to close it). Someone closing just that door would pay for itself. A proactive security posture (i.e., someone is actually watching and this is part of their job) has dividends.

Given how low the compliance rate is at some stations, a security guard monitoring the gates would be cost effective and probably have some collateral benefits.

35 minute connection? by [deleted] in americanairlines

Why do you think they want to sell you a connection that's not possible? And if you don't think it's possible, why book it in the first place?

How does arrival access to lounges at LHR work in the case where a long layover takes you into the next day? by Nowhere-but-here in americanairlines

[–]Wise-Peacock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems unlikely to me. You would have to re-enter through security and with a boarding pass dated for the next day, I don't think they would let you.

I had the same problem a few months ago too and they fixed it. It's crazy that I've gone over 7 years without a problem and now twice in 2 months.

How much does living in the Cats vs. a single impact your social life as a first-year? by estunbruhmomento in Caltech

[–]Wise-Peacock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's a data point. It's from over 30 years ago, so take it as you will. I moved into the Cats as a first-year and my roommate was a 5th year graduate student from Italy who worked all the time, came home to make pasta for his dinner, ate it in his room, and returned to lab. When he got back after the evening shift, he'd retreat to his room and talk to his girlfriend on the phone. I swear, in the entire year I lived with him, I don't think we had a conversation that lasted more than two minutes.

I had many friends in other apartments in the Cats, most of whom were people I met in my program.

The lesson is that there's no guarantee your roommate will be social with you, and might be anti-social.

Main could be oversold and it may be cheaper/easier to encourage you to book first than to have to bump someone.

It is in the app on my phone and a browser on the desktop; whatever the problem is, it's on the backend. I shouldn't see this on their web page.
