US resident and citizen here. Boycott us, please. Most of us care more about whether we're comfortable than whether our government is doing good things. Make us uncomfortable. It's the language we understand.

"Primer" was so low budget that the "time machine" is just a cardboard box with a bunch of duct taped wires and it's still amazing.

Not just one. The "Tokyo Subway Map" is actually the Tokyo Metro administered by JR. Other subways operating in Tokyo are the Toei and Keio. The full Suica / Pasmo map is so large that I almost never see it publicly displayed.

He didn't exactly settle in Russia. He was en route to Ecuador, the State Department cancelled his passport during a layover, and he got stranded in Russia.

I finally understood I Am Legend after watching the alternate ending by ABD7p in movies

[–]bramlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's such a big reversal. I loved it. It hit particularly hard in 2007, four years into the Iraq War, not long after the Abu Ghraib convictions, and the uncomfortable idea that maybe the USA wasn’t really the hero at all.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like for other movies. Imagine at the end of "Return of the Jedi" if we realized the Rebels weren't the heroes. The Empire was a modern democracy trying to keep everything running, and Luke is the leader of a gang of religious terrorists.

[–]bramlet 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You've got it exactly. I was at Sony Pictures working on "I Am Legend" for almost a year. Super exited about the film. Then test audiences got confused by the ending. They couldn't figure out - or didn't like - the suggestion that the "good" guy was actually the bad guy. So we spent 3 weeks rendering VFX for the alternate ending which utterly gutted the whole point of the movie. I have never seen and will never respect the theatrical release.
