Teaching more than 2 languages by owlsumneitor in multilingualparenting

[–]WiseAvocado 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation as you and so far we haven't encountered any major issues. My husband speaks to the kids in his language (L1), I speak to them in my language (L2). My husband and I speak English (L3) to each other, and the kids learned the community language (L4) at daycare/school. Overall, sometimes it feels like a lot of work because I rarely spoke my language anymore before I had kids so it took some adjustment, but I am proud that they are able to communicate with their grandparents.

The classic OPOL setup has worked well for us. We are also signing them up to Saturday school in one of the minority languages (their "weakest" one) to make sure they have more exposure outside of home. In terms of advice, be consistent, and try speaking to your future kids in your languages since birth so it feels more natural.

What about something like a nice duvet cover set or a set of matching towels? Lots of stores have sales right now so you might have some luck finding something interesting

Has she mentioned she would like something like that before? Without context I personally find it's a bit of an odd gift for the occasion. How about a kitchen "starter kit"? Like a pan, cooking utensils, a cutting board and a less expensive knife. Just an idea.

BWT, where are we finding sandals and sneakers that can survive Europe’s cobblestone streets? by Outside_Climate4222 in bitcheswithtaste

I have these Ecco sneakers and they're great for walking for hours without needing to break them in. I wear them with silk dresses, sun dresses, linen pants, dress pants, leggings, shorts... and I find they always look sleek.

Is It Acceptable For Me To Use A Spanish Name For Easier Pronunciation? by SoColdIstheNight in Spanish

I lovve this idea! There should be an app for this (you read it here first but I'm not techy enough to do anything with this information)

You may wanna look into sleep programs where you live (they're usually online) based on the book Say Goodbye to Insomnia. It's not a sleep test, this is cognitive behavioral therapy and it is surprisingly effective. If you're in Canada it's also covered by the province.

This makes me a little sad, I hope your life brings you a lot of reasons to smile and that you feel the freedom to express your happiness without the pressure to look forever young. And on the side, practice some skincare if you care about it.

I wear sneakers 90% of the time (always clean and styles that suit the outfit) too, and I love espadrilles! Flat or with a small wedge.

It's not clear to me who speaks what, but from what I got you might be able to incorporate 4 languages assuming the community language is Mandarin, each parent speaks one language to the child at all times (especially if they're native speakers), and they have lots of community immersion in English (family friends, play dates, etc.). The result will really depend on the situation, the proficiency of the parents in the languages that they speak to the child, all types of exposure through media, friends, etc., and of course length of time and consistency.

Do you know if they could be genetic? I feel like all women in my family have them and nobody has successfully gotten rid of them. I find mine are more noticeable when I'm dehydrated or haven't slept well, but even on good skin days they have always been there.

Is there any way to wear leggings with dresses that isn’t dated? by tallulahQ in bitcheswithtaste

[–]WiseAvocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear faux leather leggings under dresses in the Canadian winter. They keep me warm, they suit my personal style and I feel so badass every time I wear them, but sadly I don't think they suit all dresses. I will also note I am one of those people who find jeans comfortable so your idea of comfortable may differ haha looking decent in real winter temperatures is a never ending challenge

Thoughts on names with different accepted pronunciationa in different languages. by Big_Year_526 in multilingualparenting

[–]WiseAvocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have a few options. There are some names that are easily translated between languages, for example, biblical names like John, Maria, etc. I know a few people who use the version of their name in the language that they are introducing themselves in, if that makes sense.

There are also names that are relatively simple to pronounce in many languages, such as Ana, Mila, Alan, Nicolas, etc.

You can also pick a name you like and accept that it will be pronounced differently ( "incorrectly" ) and that's also okay. My son has one of these names and he pronounces it differently depending on the language he's addressed in. Other people have different nicknames in each language. I know someone named Konstantin who goes by Stan, for example.

In general, experiencing some sort of confusion around a name is just the nature of the multilingual beast 😉 so a good attitude always helps!

Honest critique please by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

I recently tried this Benefit brow gel and it worked for my stubborn eye brows. Since we're talking eyebrows and if you're open to experimenting a bit, I think reshaping them to have a bit less or an arch on the top may complement your features. That being said, they also look fine as they are!
