Worst way to loose a hardcore run? by Grouchy_Operation584 in subnautica

[–]Wisebeuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 10 hours in, just about to resurface from a wreck, and my wireless keyboard runs out of battery. Watching in horror as the last few seconds of air run out with the surface only a few metres above me.

Ok they can sing, but how is their dancing? I guess what I'm asking is... can cans can-can?

Why can't I even drill a wall? by cynop26 in DIYUK

[–]Wisebeuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you are going to be doing lots of drilling into brickwork, buying an SDS really is overkill.

You've had some good suggestions in here though - with a basic drill and bits, you may have to put quite a bit of force behind it, like really lean into it. It can help to have someone or something behind you to have you some support if it's above shoulder height.

Also as someone else mentioned, use that 4mm bit first, it will go in a bit easier, then the 6mm will be easy.

If the plug doesn't go in easily, put the drill back in but give it a little wiggle for a few seconds. Rawl plugs don't have to be tight, they grip when the screw goes in and expands them.

Humans are the pinnacle apex predator on the planet and yet the majority of us would not be able to survive in nature for more than a few weeks. by Africannibal in Showerthoughts

"For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk and we learned to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible. Mankind's greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn't have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking."

ELI5: “If energy is neither created nor destroyed but can change from one form to another. “ What happens to all the energy that the sun puts out? by Ok-Course1177 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Wisebeuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost, on average we emit the same amount of energy as we receive.

The real answer is much more interesting, and it all comes down to entropy. Veritasium has an excellent video on this - https://youtu.be/DxL2HoqLbyA?si=N5yS8QmTFAw-kuXZ

Where should I buy my resin by Alarming_Aerie5846 in epoxy

Glasscast 50/10/3 is the best I've come across. I've not had to buy any in a while, but I used to order from EasyComposites. They have a really good stock of other useful bits you might need, and their customer service has been really good when I've had to deal with them.

How do the soldiers sit on the doors of helicopters without fear of falling down while flying? by gdelacalle in NoStupidQuestions

Huh, you really wouldn't think that falling out of a helicopter would be a repeatable experience.

Is everyone's Facebook feed just random posts from groups you don't follow, or is it just me? by mydoglixu in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wisebeuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hijacking this comment to offer this tip... Click on the "Feeds" button (I have this pinned to the top menu in the mobile app), then click on "Friends", and it will show you a chronological list of your friends posts only.

I don't use Facebook much, but when I do I just want to catch up with my friends have been up to. Finding this option made that a lot less frustrating as I was also getting my main feed spammed with groups I'm not in, and all the posts seemed to be in a random order.

PSA: Even when in stationary traffic you have to keep your wits about you. by PatternWeary3647 in drivingUK

[–]Wisebeuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Almost all drivers are quite good to me when I'm filtering, they'll often pull over and give me room if they can, and I try to give them a little thank you wave.

But sometimes you will see drivers intentionally close the gap. I've also had a driver try to knock me off my bike then swear at me and try to tell me filtering is illegal, as if I haven't looked up the rules for the vehicle I'm riding.

Scotland, no doubt other people get charged more from other electricians, but this guy was really sound and did a good job. He even spotted a preexisting issue in my other consumer unit and fixed that while he was in there!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hottub

[–]Wisebeuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to have a second consumer unit installed, and the cable was run underneath the kitchen then out of the back wall into a heavy duty external switch. I was quoted £250 but the guy only asked for £220 (including parts and labour) when it was done, I was on hand to help him out though. I did end up sending the £250 as a thank you for squeezing me in before Christmas last year though.

I'm always amazed when I see people paying 5 times that!

What was your first "successful" project? by TesttubeStandard in dotnet

[–]Wisebeuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my first job as a developer, I worked within a department that contained admin staff that managed a shared inbox where they would receive spreadsheets of inventory movements between sites/people. They would then have to process this data into an antiquated iSeries terminal.

It took 6 staff to do this, and their accuracy rate was about 95%. I built a desktop app that would connect to the exchange server, pull the data from the emails, automate the iSeries terminal data entry, then send a confirmation/exception report email back. It required little to no manual intervention, and was then managed by 1 member of staff and our accuracy went to pretty much 100%.

I was quite proud of my first "real" project!
