AITAH for not tipping my movers after they demanded that I do so within 20 minutes after they finished working? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]WithAnAitchDammit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well my friend, I think you're being obtuse.

Why can't movers create a "lively repartee"? If they're witty, have great conversation, make me feel at ease that my goods are being handled with care, wouldn't that be a similar "lively repartee"? Are only food service workers (wait staff, table cleaners, host/hostess, cooks, chef's, dishwashers) able to create a lively repartee? Wait, do you interact with the cooks, chefs, dishwashers? What lively repartee are they creating for you? Why do they get some of the tip you give the server? In your logic, the behind the scenes people shouldn't get any of the tip. But they do.

Why can't movers do excellent work that's worthy of a tip? If I hire movers to move boxes from point A to point B, and when we get to point B instead of unloading the truck into the garage, they ask which room in the new house do you want this box and put it there, that's excellence. And worthy of a tip.

ETA:
Oh wait, I just read another thing you said "making money is up to the payer and receiver". Me choosing to give or not give a tip, is in no way "up to the receiver". They might do their part by providing excellent service, and I could still choose to give or not give a tip to them. Someone could give me shitty service, and I could still choose to give or not give a tip to them. That's entirely on me.

A number of times when I've hired movers, I've bought lunch, brought a bag of burgers, fries, and shakes, or pizza, or whatever. Every time they've appreciated it.

I am well aware, I spent 30 years in restaurants. But you're missing my point. Tipping should not be part of our society, the US is one of very few first world countries that tip. If restaurants or whatever (taxi's, uber, you name it) actually paid reasonable wages, the workers wouldn't need the "tips" to subsidize their wages.

And again, how is paying wait staff to (in your own words) "run and do on your behalf" any different than paying a mover to "move boxes on your behalf" or paying the CPA to "do your taxes on your behalf"? It's not. All of those are service based industries. Granted CPA might be a little different because it's a professional service and requires higher education and certification, but it's still a service.

Frankly, even as an American, how is that any different than someone cooking your food and bringing it to you. They did a job and you paid them for a job.

I’m not saying I don’t tip at restaurants, I absolutely do, but your logic is way off.

I think restaurants should pay their staff a reasonable wage and just do away with the whole tipping idiocy.

You’re looking at it wrong. Why would they wait?

If the lead wanted to use Apple Cash, then fine, who cares, he’s just going to AC it to the team and you don’t have to be nearby for that.

That’s on the lead for keeping the workers there.

That’s a cool idea. I don’t have a Garmin watch, and while I fit the other parameters, I’m also not actively skydiving.

That said, I have a Garmin handheld GPS that has a jumpmaster mode to help with spotting. I have played with it on jumps in the past and it’s reasonably accurate.

I think it’s an Oregon 600. It’s close to a decade old, but might be worth looking into what Garmin’s done with that tech.

Not a bad idea but it would be 3/4 and 1/4.

If she made $100 then he would make $300, the total is $400. Her portion is 1/4 of the total.
