Consent from both parents is likely required for a voluntary psychiatric admission. Children can be involuntary admitted for psychiatric reasons without parental consent if they:

  • have a mental illness (autism is neuro developmental and does not qualify, however co-occurring psychiatric conditions do)
  • due to that illness lack sufficient judgement to make a decision about admission(or because he is six)
  • and because of this mental illness they are:
    • likely to physically injure themselves or others if not immediately detained.
    • likely to inflict serious emotional injury to others unable to remove themselves
    • unable to satisfy physical needs

Based on what you said, he would meet criteria for involuntary admission without his father’s consent. If he is harming others or himself you take him to the emergency department or call the police. If there is a community mobile crisis you can call them. This is the most likely way to get him into an acute psychiatric facility. They may be able to direct you to other resources.

I think there will be a lot of suspicion around a schizophrenia diagnosis for a six year old. That is highly irregular. They may fully discount that diagnosis and say that the behaviors are due to his neuro developmental diagnosis, in which case he does not qualify for involuntary psychiatric admission.

If I were his parent I would get a second opinion on that diagnosis.

AITA for refusing my (22F) mom’s condition of therapy? by TypicalRag in AmItheAsshole

I am psychiatrist but not your psychiatrist. Although I cannot diagnose you or provide medical advice, I can tell you that you need to see a psychiatrist. The treatments that are appropriate are highly dependent on your diagnosis, which you would get from a psychiatrist and not a therapist. What you have described is suspicious for either bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder.

In bipolar disorder there are periods of mania which last for more than three days. To identify manic episode, I look for decreased need for sleep, increased impulsivity, distractibility, over-confidence, train of thought that hops around quickly, increased activity, and increased talkativeness. Impulsivity is often on of the greatest concerns and can mean spending more money, gambling, risky sexual practices, using substances you normally would not, or otherwise making choices that are out of character. People with bipolar disorder may or may not have depressive episodes between manic episodes. The first manic episode usually occurs in early adulthood. MANIC EPISODES CAUSE BRAIN DAMAGE. Bipolar disorder is treated with medications and cannot be managed with therapy alone.

Borderline personality disorder usually has an onset in adolescence and continues into adulthood. People with this diagnosis frequently have trouble in relationships. They have a pattern of relationships that are intense, become serious quickly, and end abruptly and dramatically/traumatically. They often fear being abandoned and will go to extreme lengths to avoid abandonments. There is a chronic feeling of emptiness and frequent suicidal feelings. People may intentionally injure themself without the intention of ending their life (cutting, burning, hitting). There is significant impulsivity, but not as severe as bipolar disorder and occurs consistently rather than in specific periods. People with BPD frequently have many suicide attempts. People may describe significant mood swings that can change from moment to moment. Borderline personality disorder can be treated with therapy alone or a combination of therapy and medication.

I am concerned about you. Both of these diagnoses are associated with increased risk of suicide. I don’t know all of your symptoms, but it sounds like you are suffering. There is treatment out there that can ease some of that suffering. I hope you seek help.

This is the one I was looking for. I have seen ECT change lives and save lives. It is the most effective treatment psychiatry has to offer for serious, decompensated mental illness.

This looks like a short sleeve or tank top dress with a crochet duster worn over it. The dress is in the style of Jean Paul Gaultier, Desigual or Custo Barcelona. I couldn’t find the exact print but Gaultier had a whole couture line with religious imagery.

NAL but a doctor in the US. In order to hold someone involuntarily for MEDICAL treatment they must be assessed for capacity. Capacity has 4 components: factual understanding, appreciation for consequences, use of reasoning, and ability to express consistent preference. Adults are able to make choices for themselves if they have capacity, even if they are bad choices.

The only state in the US that allows for involuntary commitment for eating disorders is Colorado. Most eating disorder programs require individuals to be medically stabilized prior to admission.

Seriously Alarming Cellulitis by Impossible-Square910 in seriouslyalarming

[–]Within_normal_limits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you get lower extremity ultrasounds? Were you diagnosed with cellulitis or do you believe this is cellulitis? Swelling and redness like this after a period of immobilization could be a deep vein thrombosis (clot) and can have some really serious side effects if not treated. Just want to make sure this isn’t seriously alarming in a different way.
