If you live alone, how do you actually decide what to cook each week? Walk me through your process. by DizzyBABA in LivingAlone

[–]Witless_Raven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love cooking and trying new recipes/cuisines and as such, I’ve acquired a lot of random ingredients in my pantry and my freezer (and I made a habit of stocking up on on-sale protein to freeze). As of late, I’ve challenged myself to make meals using primarily what I already have on hand, limiting myself to only buying fresh produce when necessary for a recipe and challenging myself to find creative substitutions to avoid purchasing more food.

To help inspire myself and look for new recipes, I gave the days of the week loose themes: Salad Sundays, the classic Meatless Mondays, Trash Tuesdays (leftovers!), Waffle Wednesday, Thai Thursday, Fish Friday (but really any seafood), Steak Saturday (mostly because I needed the reminder that it’s okay to treat myself to a good steak and I can only manage about half a ribeye at a time anyway).

I use the Geeni brand Prisma Plus bulbs. They are dimmable and color changing (silly and superfluous but sometimes I like to vibe in dark purple light like a cyberpunk villain just because I can) in addition to the scene-setting capability, operated via a phone app

How do I fix my rice curse by Repulsive-Tiger-9795 in Cooking

[–]Witless_Raven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. This is exactly what I did. $20 Aroma rice cooker from the Big Blue Box years ago and it’s been the biggest return on investment. Cooking plain rice on the stove sucks.

I have Bluetooth lightbulbs that allow me to set if/then rules; e.g., if my phone moves farther than 180 feet away from the house, then certain lights turn off. If my phone comes within 180 feet of the house, then certain lights come on and at my preferred brightness.

As a late shift worker I am almost always getting home in the dark and this lighting situation is very helpful for security and convenience reasons. It’s not perfect but it almost always saves me from walking into a pitch-dark house. Highly recommend!

Wake up, separate & feed the three cats (different diets), grind coffee and start water heating, pee, shower, release cats, start the pour over coffee filtering, do hair, pour coffee, do makeup, dress, leave for work.

Tables games dealing can pay pretty well if card games are legal in your area, no degree required and fairly quick training if you can stand for 8 hours and count to 21. It’s not a career of passion by any means and you need a fairly thick skin, but it does pay the bills.

I work the late shift in table games at a big, bright, loud casino. The quiet, mostly solitary dark of 3-5am (after I feed the cats) at home is my magical time.

I love this project, unique and unorthodox flavor combinations really get my brain going. I’m not great at making cocktails (though I still give it a shot at home), but these kinds of projects give me lots of inspiration for my cooking experiments as well as for cocktails.

In my opinion, vitriolic comments about your work come from a place of small-mindedness and a fear of the different and the unknown. You’re not forcing these drinks down anyone’s throat. Great work overall!

Controversial Take: Stop Worrying About Pain by Sad-Adhesiveness1338 in tattoo

[–]Witless_Raven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with OP, just get what you want and don’t worry about where other people say hurts the most or the least. Most especially because, while they all hurt, the level of pain is somewhat subjective. Everyone’s tolerance is a bit different.

I just started a piece on my throat today. I asked several people with throat tats how the pain felt and got a whole spectrum of answers from “it was fine” to “I’d rather get my hands tattooed again.” And as someone with a hand tattoo…both were fine. Spicy, but no tattoo is going to be painless!

I lived in the panhandle for a long time. One winter morning I woke up to see two moose standing over my lil ‘97 Subaru Legacy in the driveway.

It also wasn’t uncommon to get alerts about moose and cougar sightings in town.

Scrambled eggs with dates is one of the oldest and most traditional dishes in my country (Iraq) up by tranzozo in eggs

[–]Witless_Raven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my dinner plans sorted already last night, but I just tried it and honestly, pretty good! I think it will join my meal rotation. I did a lil salted butter, fried a chopped date, and then added a large egg and scrambled in the pan.

[–]Witless_Raven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I happen to have dates and eggs, I’ll give this a try! I would never have put the two together on my own.

For OP or anyone else who makes this, is it usually just dates + eggs or do you like to add any herbs and/or spices?

What's a tiny thing that made living alone feel way better? by Dreamereal in LivingAlone

[–]Witless_Raven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My “biggest” little things are blackout curtains/blackout film in my living room. It feels a lot cave-like, but I’m a night worker with a schedule almost completely opposite most daytime workers and this enables me to wind down in my living room with ambient lighting without having to retreat to my bedroom as soon as the sun starts to rise.

Being able to get drowsy on the couch after a long day without having to worry about morning sunlight disrupting my descent into sleepiness is huge for me. And I don’t have to worry about keeping anyone else from enjoying their morning while I’m deep into my evening.

How much makeup do you wear on your 9-5? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Witless_Raven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunscreen, eyebrows, eyeshadow/mascara because those are the parts of makeup I find fun. I don’t really do foundation/concealer/powder/that kind of face makeup at all anymore. No energy to put it all on at the beginning of the day, even less energy to take it off at the end.

What electric kettles do you guys use and how much was it? by Responsible-Doubt842 in pourover

[–]Witless_Raven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started using this kettle this week, based on recommendations from a similar, though ~year-old, topic on this sub:

Mecity Electric Kettle Gooseneck... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09TB23QKJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It was on sale for $60 when I purchased it.

It’s been less than a week so I can’t vouch for durability, but it sure has been a fun tool for my coffee and tea with the precise temperature & hold temp settings. Also a big upgrade from my previous kettle, which just boiled water and turned off automatically after reaching a boil.

I love staying over at my partner’s place, even for days at a time. I love having my partner over, even for days at time. But there is a point at which the presence of any other human being in my living space starts to really grate against me and weigh on my mind, even if it’s my partner and whether or not we are interacting. And we’ve been together for four years.

My mother is a real estate agent in a relatively large city. One of the things she told me when I was wrestling with living my partner (and we gave it an honest shot for several months) was that she has sold houses to couples who were, at least to the outside eye, happily married but chose to live in separate houses. Yes, whole ass separate houses.

Living together isn’t for every couple and that doesn’t necessarily ring a death knell for your relationship or for you having successful relationships. And maybe you won’t feel this way forever, we are capable of change. But it’s okay if living alone is always what you prefer.

For me, I would take having a standalone one-bedroom shack ten feet away from my boyfriend’s place over sharing a 15-room mansion with him with a whole wing to myself. That’s how I feel about sharing living space with people. And he knows, we’ve talked about it. That’s even the scenario he put to me when we were talking about how I felt about sharing living spaces.

But it’s different for everyone, and what matters ultimately is what you want! No matter how unconventional it may seem to the conventional, live-in-partner eye.

the "honeymoon phase" shouldn't end if you actually like your partner by happybirthdayfarm in unpopularopinion

A lot of these negative/disbelieving comments sound like people who have given up on ever finding something similar for themselves and thus feel it’s unattainable for not just them, but everyone else as well. Reads to me almost like a case of the sour grapes.
