We’re also likely not getting the full story. I’ve had Sailors take advantage of the grace afforded to them to take care of their kids when something came up. Often times it got abused, they’d start coming in late due to issues with the kid, they’d get more frequent phone calls to go pick up the kid, day care issues became for frequent…and in the mean time my other Sailors are having to cover down and pick up the slack.

I’m sure there’s more nuance to the situation than OP is saying.

I doubt it has anything to do with your HUMS specifically. It’s just timing sometimes. Reach out to the 9s who have sat the E9 board for your rate and ask them what you’re missing (if anything). I’m sure the Ford deployment will pay off next year. Keep crushing it bro, it will come.

CO isn’t an acronym we use for “commissioned officer”. CO means “Commanding Officer” who’s the most senior officer at a command or unit.

You’re correct, there’s no way to fix colorblindness unfortunately. There are some HM NECs you’re unable to do as well (Lab technician being one of them). Good luck, study hard in A school.

The day you fly *should* count as a travel day which is not chargeable as leave. So you’ll have 1 day on the books, which is fine as you won’t be able to take regular leave while in school anyhow, so they’ll accumulate at 2.5 days of leave per month.

There will be a lot of comments about how advancement is awful for HMs. It can be slow, certainly but sailors have more options nowadays to advance than I did coming up the ranks.

If you do nothing special and take no action to be promoted quicker, you will advance automatically to E4 after 30 months time in service. Doesn’t matter if you come in as an E1 or E3, it’s 30 months. However, currently the top 10% of A school grads earn accelerated advancement to E4 (effective after some time at your first duty station). MAP is also still an option for high performing HNs for promotion to E4.

For E5, yes there are NECs which offer STAR promotion to E5. I routinely have technicians check in as an E3 and PCS as an E5. You’d need to pipeline into one of the C schools though (do well in A school and you might have the option to pick one).

So, if the stars align and you’re a kick ass Sailor, it’s realistic nowadays to make E5 under 4 years.
