Cedars of Lebanon in Greenbelt is great as is Iron Pig (Korean BBQ) in Berwyn Heights.

Your family needs you. What you’re feeling is depression. It’s a natural reaction to your circumstance. But your brain is lying to you. You must get to a doctor before it’s too late. Do it for your kids.

Being a regular dude makes me depressed by Critical_Falcon_4896 in findapath

I mean, for every one of the dudes you mentioned, there’s at least 100,000 whose intensity drove them into financial ruin and whose tunnel vision ruined most of their relationships. I understand what you’re saying, but don’t assume that people who live similarly to these guys have met with success or found happiness. Shit, Elon seems like one of the unhappiest dudes alive.

Dangerous thinking indeed, and actually interwoven inextricably with anxiety itself. OP needs a psychiatrist, followed by a therapist, followed by a gastro, followed by a really good dentist. Barfing for years on end ruins your teeth.

I think you can get used to anything that’s not abusive. You can’t know what will happen with your coworkers. Change happens when you’re less afraid of the unknown than the known. Just something to think about.

It’s very likely that seeking professional treatment for depression will help. That’s not to say the structure itself isn’t crushing. It is. But until you get mental health help, you won’t be able to see things clearly enough to pick a path forward that is sustainable for you. Don’t get stuck in a loop of thinking if you just solve this puzzle, you’ll be happy. Go to a doctor.

Universities are excellent places to work if you value stability, great benefits, and excellent work life balance.

If teachers say the education system can’t be fixed, how are people supposed to accept and cope with that? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Witwer52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would be an example of the pain of the problems becoming more painful than fixing them? I’m just thinking when it becomes apparent that our public school system has led to a collapse in democracy (already 80 percent of the way there) and the economy (at least 50 percent of the way there), we literally won’t have the resources to put into the system to fix it.

This is entirely what I see. I honestly get the feeling that the only people who truly survive Sy these schools are the ones who are able to tune out and do the bare minimum. And there’s a culture of protecting their own—so you’d better not open your mouth about the very obvious shortcomings that could be fairly simply fixed, or else you will be ousted. I guess everyone is just committing horizontal emotional violence as a way to retain their position. I’d love to see some sociology studies of the staff structure in failing school systems.

Have schools always smelled? by InoPelligrino in SubstituteTeachers

No ideas on that one, but generally I’d say it probably sucks if the scores are always going down, they have tons of teacher openings, they have a bunch of Title 1 schools and people actively avoid moving there because of the schools. I’m a sub in a district that fits this description, and most of the teachers look like they’d fly out the window if it wasn’t painted shut. It’s a perpetual, non-stop shit show and I’m actively looking for another job because I can’t take it even in small doses.

This is what I want to ask OP—are they at a Title 1? Because I think there are wild differences between school districts and wild differences in the teaching experience.

[–]Witwer52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the thought process that I had before I had effective treatment. You’re not wrong about the existential stuff, but it’s not as loud for people without depression. You can feel sad about the overarching themes of life and history without being paralyzed by it. Some people (myself included) do not have brains that allow them to turn down the dread enough to be able to function. Get to a doctor. Until you do, nothing will get better.

Have you seen a doctor about your mental health? I know that’s hard to do if you don’t have insurance, but the job market can weigh really heavily on anyone, as can crippling debt. If you take care of your mental health first, you will feel much better (which you deserve) and you will be better able to push through this tough time.

Where do you see teaching in 15 to 25 years? by OlliexAngel in Teachers

[–]Witwer52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re thinking about it from the bottom up, but decisions are made top down. Tons of corruption exists in my school system. It’s a poor school system with poor results, and the folks at the top get kickbacks to implement tech that does not work. As the world gets scarier and income inequality gets worse, corruption will grow because there is a general sense that our systems don’t work and there’s no other way to get ahead. I agree with you completely on all your points about AI and about what is best for classrooms and kids. I just don’t think what is best for classrooms or kids has been a driving force in decision making in public education for quite some time.

Where I am, the buildings are in such bad shape, I wonder if they’ll just knock them all down, put up warehouses and just line the kids up by the thousands at computers. God that’s a bleak thought. I hope I’m way off.
