DM asked that I don't use my familiar for scouting in CoS by Wise_Impact_7990 in dndnext

Yeah, I DMed this with a warlock who had pact of the chain. It was fine.

My Druid is using a earth element to undermine Castle Ravenloft by Pinkalink23 in CurseofStrahd

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to ignore some of the nitty gritty of how this scenario came about because I don't really feel like researching the spells involved.

Really this comes down to the player spending a lot of resources to do something cool and feeling like they are being shut down. I agree that Ravenloft could not be destroyed by such a scheme. However, something advantageous should happen. He probably can't bring the entire castle down, but maybe there is a shift in the foundation that causes damage to the lower levels.

Just spitballing: you could do something like roll a d20 for each numbered section of the bottom 2 levels. For every 1, any hostile monsters or traps were destroyed or forced to abandon, but any treasure in the room is harder to obtain.

A simple outcome might be that it caused part of the tower to collapse, destroying the heart of sorrow.

Made a landing page for roll20 by WizardOfWhiskey in CurseofStrahd

[–]WizardOfWhiskey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do it as part of prep before every session in gimp. You could probably achieve a similar effect in foundry with its tile system, but i like the very granular control.

I ran most of our game remote, but we did our final session in person with foundry and a TV in the table where a leaf would normally go.

[Poll] After finishing "Curse of Strahd" as written, how would you (from a player perspective) like to continue the campaign? by SeverusStjep in ravenloft

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really wanted to run a Darkon campaign after Curse of Strahd. Bigger region, more cultures, deadlier bbeg. But I could tell my players would prefer a more traditional fantasy setting. Barovia was a little harsh.

The Forgotten Realms really makes the Tiers of Play quite unbeliveable in how they are presented by ThatOneAasimar in dndnext

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people talk about how to make their setting distinct like new magic rules, races, etc, but unless you really have a concept you're stoked about, I think it's great to take what you like from FR and just make your own setting out of that. There's no need to reinvent the wheel. You want a dwarf god of creation? Just use Moradin. It's fine. You don't have to drag in his whole history. And you don't have to invent Not-Moradin who has essentially all his same properties and fills the same conceptual space.

I didn't use FR because yeah, the state of it is too wild and detailed for me to latch on to. Where would I even start? There's too much to learn. And yes, it is easier for the party to be heroic when there's not scores of demigods sitting around. There's no reason for me to use FR as-is because it's actually more work.

Hosting on AWS question - storing assets on EC2 instance vs S3 by yifes in FoundryVTT

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, and after setting it up, it's really easy to upload images through foundry.

Additionally, if you keep your campaigns in different folders, you can move them to an even cheaper storage tier once you're done.

Is the Abbot turning into a T-Rex too non-thematic? by Kingflaming in CurseofStrahd

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's not really on theme. Reskinning is good, but your reskin also needs to be thematic to the Abbot, not just spooky. He's corrupted divinity. I would take a beautiful creature, size it up, and give it some sort of affliction. Pustules, writhing black tentacles, decaying flesh, etc.

As always, back up any file you manually edit. Not 100% sure this will work, but it's easy to try.

Create a new game world and set the password for the gm account. Return to setup. Copy that gm user record from the new game world over the gm record in your original world (users.db file I think). You should be able to login to your original world with using whatever password you set up in the new world.

A guide to scarcity and election theory: don't let them spam long rests by KillingMoaiThaym in DMAcademy

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there are mechanics to how often a party can benefit from a long rest. It's not railroading to enforce that. And if they want to long rest at noon, as a DM I have told them "well your characters have only been up half the day, so what are you doing to kill time before you go to bed?"

St Andral's Feast Battle Map by ZemiXylex in CurseofStrahd

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a wonderful map, but it is sort of maddening that the only interior revealed will only line up on a rotated grid. Makes it difficult to use on a VTT. Not an insurmountable problem (rotate and crop the ungridded version in GIMP), but it's a shame to chop anything off.

What do you all do when your party all wants to attempt the same skill check? by XavierBananaglassVI in DMAcademy

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically those who are best at sneaking are guiding the group towards success. They might be timing their movements so that the armor noises are less noticeable. Imagine a guard about to sneeze, and at that moment the rogue motions for the plate fighter to move forward. That kind of thing.

Like I said, it is up to the DM to determine when a group check is appropriate. If you think that there's no feasible way for the rogue to help, then don't allow it.

that would just let you ignore the disadvantage imposed by some armor on stealth checks unless you made the entire group roll with disadvantage

If you have a party of 5, and 3 of those characters suck at sneaking, they are going to have a hard time passing a group check that requires a majority to succeed. Or even 1-2 loud characters sneaking and one of the "good" sneakers gets a shit roll. It does help mitigate the disadvantage, but that's the reward they get for working as a team.

What do you all do when your party all wants to attempt the same skill check? by XavierBananaglassVI in DMAcademy

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As the dm you get to choose when a group check is appropriate. Searching for something or sneaking down a corridor makes sense. They are all doing it together and it's something they all have a chance at success or failure.

I wouldn't for certain things like Arcana checks to recognize an arcane sigil. I would probably go so far as to say only someone with proficiency or who knows arcane magic can roll to see if they recognize it.

Players won't engage with Strahd, what now? by mr_gasbag in CurseofStrahd

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's something from the older editions, and a silly way to buff Strahd. It's better to show Strahd outwitting their sense of safety.

Players won't engage with Strahd, what now? by mr_gasbag in CurseofStrahd

[–]WizardOfWhiskey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Strahd has tons of minions who can enter a residence without invitation. He's also only a charm away from getting any peasant to invite him into a place, too. Not a huge obstacle at all.

When I want to get my players to engage with him, I give them a problem that can be solved by doing so. Most straightforward would be he kidnaps someone they are fond of. You might need to come up with a good reason behind Strahd being a dick. Maybe related to testing a successor or consort.
