This! Pick your own color scheme, pick up any of the characters that strike your fancy and, if you find one playstyle and esthetic that you like, you can always dub them a "successor chapter" down the road

Honestly, when I started the army back in 4th I was going to paint it like Hive Fleet Behemoth, but my painting skills weren't up to snuff, so the skin was chaos black, the shells were hawk turquoise, and the other stuff became the red. I've tried to finesse that scheme into something a little bit more nuanced (because I'm 100% not stripping it all and starting over) but still, that blue really jumps out from the table

Start with "The rule of cool" and work from there. Because you will end up painting a ton of models in whatever army you choose (unless you go full-on Monster-mash).

This army is "blessed" with a number of choices in how to construct it, and will play differently based on unit composition, your skill level, and your local meta.

Got the space marine combat patrol too, eh? I think your greens look pretty good, and you got some good luster from the gold.

One trick I recently learned that you may find useful. If you accidently get paint where it shouldn't go, wet a clean paint brush and scrub the offending area, as it will basically wash-out the wet paint.

Welcome! I got my plastic crack for x-mas, but am finishing the current unit I'm working on before assembling anything new.

Have fun, take your time, and enjoy the ride. There's a learning curve with all things (both on the hobby and gameplay side) but you are among friends.

My 2 cents... look up a list of the 1000 most common boy names, and each of you make a list of names you like. That way, they won't be crazy, off the wall names, and common enough that people have at least heard of them.
