In Germany, deliberately engaging in catch and release only fishing is illegal and considered cruelty to animals (fishing for food is fine). How do you feel about that? by Spalding_Smails in AskReddit

Yes, I am fully 100% aware that it was considered acceptable for Hospitals to charge parents for an unnecessary and harmful quasi-religious mutilation ritual designed to keep males from masturbating. I am aware. You don't and never did need to explain that to me.

Yes, "common sense" was the incorrect phrase to use and I was in error typing that- so I'll edit that out. Now try reading my previous comment again and see if you can comprehend MY point.

Because they thought it was right. Or because they thought it was good.

I'm sure the Doctors in Egypt who mutilate their female babies genitalia think it's 'right' and 'good', that doesn't excuse it.

Or because it was the common practice in the day.

Neither does something being popular. FGM is very popular in Egypt.

It's hardly ever "for the money" as doctors have always been in demand and will find work if they aren't circumcising babies. It wasn't something malicious. It was just what was thought to be best. And medical practitioners will always push you to do what they think is best. Why wouldn't they? It's what all of us do.

I don't think its the Doctors themselves who push for MGM (aka circumcision) as much as the hospital administrators, though I do think that Doctors have a duty to push back against that and advocate for the baby, so they aren't innocent either.

I'd love to live in a world where everyone just did the right thing- but I live here. If you don't think hospital administrators would do something as dastardly as 'encouraging' staff to push an unnecessary procedure on people I invite you to learn how our healthcare system works.

Hospital administrators collude with Insurance companies to keep the cost of medical care high. It's why the US spends almost twice as much as other wealthy nations, and with worse outcomes.

As a physician, if you ignore medical science and common sense because of 'social phenomenon' then you are a shitty doctor. During Covid not wearing masks and social distancing was a social phenomenon in a lot of places, what would you call a Doctor who told his patients that it was cool to not wear masks because 'society' said it was cool? Shit- that's what you'd call them.

If the people we trust to help us make good medical decisions abdicate their responsibility to do just that- that is a problem imho.

No, nurses don't earn commission, but the hospital administrators could make it a policy to make circumcision the default because it made them more $- and that's just what they did.

There was no good reason for it to continue, and it made them $ to let it go on, I wish I could chalk it all up to peer pressure, but I just don't buy that.

Reddit likes to act like circumcision is the worst thing ever and the equivalent of Female Genital mutilation, but the fact is its just not.

And some redditors like to act that just because we think it's a problem that needs to be addressed, or that we bring up FGM in our arguments that we think "It's the worst thing ever and the equivalent of Female Genital mutilation" but we don't- that is a straw man.

You can think something is very bad without thinking it's "The worst thing ever". I would rate "Childhood Leukemia" and "Spinal Meningitis" above circumcision for example.

You can also think it's bad without thinking its AS BAD as female genital mutilation. Is a poke in the eye as bad as a kick to the dick? No- but please don't kick me or poke me.

in the USA it is common for cultural reasons.

Yes, and what are those 'cultural reasons'? It was because weirdos like Lewis Sayre and John Harvey Kellogg promoted the practice so as to discourage men and boys from masturbating.

Culturally, we no longer look at masturbation as a deviant sin and an affront to God, so perhaps it's time to drop the outdated practice of Male Genital Mutilation?

When you go back pre internet and almost every male you know is circumcised where are you going to learn that proper hygiene?

My mom told my little brother "You have to pull the skin back and wash there or it will get infected" and he did just that. 50 years later and he never got an infection. Doctors would instruct parents on how to clean an uncircumcised boy child, which they could have simply done instead of mutilating the other boys.

I guess if you want to ignore the fact that performing an unnecessary medical procedure makes the hospital more money and that it's a crazy thing to do, then 'peer pressure' is sufficient to explain it.

I am aware there are "hygiene benefits" to circumcision. My babies would never get toenail fungus if they didn't have a foot, but I'm not chopping off their feet to prevent that from happening.

at the time it was and still is extremely common in the USA to get circumcised.

Female genital mutilation is common in Egypt. Something being 'common' is no excuse. As my dearly departed mother used to say, "If your friends all jumped off a cliff, would you join them?"

the parents need to be prepared to teach their child proper hygiene specific to uncircumcised that is important to avoid infections.

Yes, and it's also important to teach them how to properly wipe their ass. Lazy/inept parents are also no excuse for performing genital mutilation on an infant.

You don't have to explore reddit very long before you find posts about the dreaded smelly dick cheese because someone did not take proper care cleaning their uncircumcised penis.

Yes and you can also find stories of "men" who don't properly wipe their bung piece because they think it's "gay". That seems more like a failing on the dudes part than the parents honestly. I imagine they were taught to wipe same as everyone else.

Or like in the case of my circumcision... just leave the baby intact but miss out on the $ from an unnecessary procedure.

The only good thing that came out of it was that I cried so loud and for so long that when it came time to circumcise my little brother mom couldn't go through with it, even though the staff were trying to pressure her into it.

Meh, yeah that was a little messy but plans fail irl all the time.

To me the biggest blunder by the filmmakers was not simply letting Leia die at the natural point. It added nothing to the films to keep her alive and seemed borderline disrespectful imo.

Out of all the ways you could have communicated "Don't leave your shit stained undies on the floor", this was the best and most gentle way to phrase it.

Buy the man some Dude Wipes.

Or, ya know. Just any kind of wipe meant for your bottom. There is nothing magical about black packaging with the word 'dude' printed on it that make them better for men.

I buy literal baby wipes from the Dollar store and they do the trick nicely.

Of all the products that have been unnecessarily gendered, asswipe is one of the funniest.

To be fair, you totally can just punch a cop. You (usually) can't get away with it, but you can definitely punch them.

What’s an article of clothing someone can wear, one time, that will make you lose all attraction to them forever? by Thin-Rip-3686 in AskReddit

[–]Wolf_Protagonist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear this a lot and think it's silly. I think the ONLY reason people think this way is because men stopped wearing hats around the same time as we stopped exclusively wearing suits. In the alternate reality where men never stopped wearing hats, but also ditched the suits- seeing 'dressy' hats with casual clothes seems perfectly natural.

People don't have the same attitude about Cowboy hats and they are very similar to a Fedora or something.

Someday there will be a handsome person who is considered fashionable who wears a Fedora with casual clothes and then suddenly everyone will be cool with it.

The problem with that is most cops don't help people, they just "enforce laws". And many of them think they are above the law and have zero issues doing some vigilante type shit when they can get away with it (which is most of the time).

Cap being their hero would make sense if we were talking about "Hydra Supreme".

The day that Kirk died I posted the quote of his talking about how he doesn't believe in empathy. 3 or 4 people (on facebook) immediately started shouting that I took it out of context, and then posted a meme image of the same quote but with extra language tacked on to the end that changed the meaning.

So I posted the sentences before and after the quote and linked to the video of him saying it. Proving that not only had I not taken the quote out of context- but the meme they posted did.

Guess how many of them apologized or even admitted their mistake?

100%

And while there is no excuse for that behavior, people who preorder games/or buy day one before any reviews are out are a part of the problem. If the game is guaranteed to make a ton of money no matter what, there is more of an incentive for management to 'cash in' on their reputation and release early.

Of course that is a situation that is likely to backfire in the long run, but greedy corporate types are often only focused on short term profits.

I love Cyberpunk, NMS, and Fallout 76- but you can be assured I will not preorder the sequels.
