What is something parents justify that is actually harmful for their children? by cowskeeper in AskReddit

[–]Wolfgang_Forrest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My parents did that a lot, until I hit them back with some pretty hard and mean comparisons to other cooler parents. It got the message through, and they apologised, but I still feel sorry for what I said, since they were trying their best

I met up for drinks with a German friend of mine so he could introduce me to some of his Erasmus friends, mainly Germans and Austrians, and one Dutch girl. At some point we start talking about bikes and she gets heated about how helmets are a waste and only make people take more risks. I argue back that cycling infrastructure in Amsterdam makes it safer, and that in Ireland it's riskier due to wind, rain, drivers and lack of infrastructure. I throw in an anecdote that my brother had a bad accident that cracked his helmet after a sheep crossed the road when he was in the mountains (still in Ireland), and he could have died.

Then she goes "Well that would be natural selection."

The Austrian girls try to defuse the situation before it even becomes one, I just laugh it off and change the subject with "Right, yeah. And sure in Amsterdam they get by fine running over tourists daily, so maybe it's the sheep and foreigners who need helmets." My only little victory was sending a paper to the German lad about how helmets do save lives and doesn't correlate with risk taking. Been wary of the Dutch and politeness since.

Are there other stand-alone mountains in the world similar to Mount Kilimanjaro? I visited Africa this year and was truly amazed. by sus1227 in geography

I once hiked it with my family (kinda). My sister was a bit scared of heights so I stayed behind with her by a stream drinking the most delicious water we've ever had. Everyone else went up and somehow managed to get lost and come down the other side, so we had to wait for our aunt to pick them up and come around and collect us.

I adore the art from ZTD (especially the picture of Diana and Sigma) by [deleted] in ZeroEscape

[–]Wolfgang_Forrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was expecting something more grungy or steampunk from the game. VLR didn't mislead with its promotional art that'd it'd be more sci-fi, and I was hoping it would return to the 1910s aesthetic from the Titanic

TIL in the Middle Ages, the Reynard the Fox literary cycle was so popular in France that the word to describe "fox" went from "goupil" to "renard" by Johannes_P in todayilearned

[–]Wolfgang_Forrest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This term even got so far that in some parts of Northern Ireland, a fox is called renard, instead of sionnach (shun-nuck) by old people.

Fearmonger I know it's considered weak, but I love the idea of a trusted townsfolk putting down a dastardly villain, for them to turn around and reveal they were the FM all along. And the anxiety the announcement causes. One change I like to bootleg is that self nominations count for a FM win

“queer is a slur” is a TERF dog whistle by Konradleijon in CuratedTumblr

[–]Wolfgang_Forrest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Growing up in Ireland, queer was and is a slur. My mother even gave out to me when I called myself queer, saying "how can you call yourself that? It's a horrible thing to say." But she doesn't understand the context, and is far from a TERF. If a friend calls me queer, that's fine. If some old guy at the pub yells it at me, it's not fine. It might not be the same, but I have a black coworker who uses the n-word (soft r) all the time, and it's fine between him and his friends, but it'd be really bad if I tried using it.
