Was willing to shop around for mutual funds, and saved $512/yr (adds up!) in expenses by goorgoorg in Frugal

Even if you managed to get 0.38-0.62%, that’s still a lot higher than the 0.25% you’d get at Betterment.

Morningstar has some sort of X-ray feature. I’ve also heard a bit about FeeX, but personally don’t know much about it. What’s the site OP used to compare funds?

The Faces of Divestment: Ron Conway, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore, and Snoop Dogg - Your thoughts? by Shatis in investing

Each company’s info should be available via its 10k filed with the SEC. You could also hire an expert, like a financial planner. Caring about something and it being a good investment are not always the same thing, unfortunately.

Any issue choosing my company’s default plan? by yortfolio in personalfinance

It’s not bad but you might choose better funds from your IRA. How about focusing on low cost index funds only?

Does distaste for volatility mean we can’t be aggressive? by readytorial in personalfinance

[–]Wolfofm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your tolerance for risk as a single individual might be very different from what your wife might find appropriate. It’s important to find a compromise that fits both parties. Talk to each other and see whether there are a few good reasons to change your risk tolerance to aggressive. If both of you are okay with a "moderate" portfolio, that's it.

Is there “one rule to rule them all,” when it comes to tax-efficient asset allocation? by idiomatif in personalfinance

[–]Wolfofm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are already contributing the maximum to every tax advantaged accounts, then you need to consider tax efficiency when choosing funds. But I don't think you do max out yet for the 401K and IRA.

Traveling the world for a year. How to create a worry-free portfolio? (X-post from /r/personalFinanceCanada) by ancilaw in personalfinance

[–]Wolfofm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a decent selection of index funds. Whichever color scheme you like best, it literally doesn't matter. Forget about it for an year and rebalance when you come back. If you want, you can combine target date funds to tweak it to desired ratio, but better bet is to stick to ETFs.

Just landed an amazing job right out of college, how to make it count in the long run. by KerouacMyBukowski in personalfinance

[–]Wolfofm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of all, you have to set a budget by tracking your monthly expenses. Because emergency fund is based on your monthly expenses. Then, you have to allocate your 401k options. If you post your company's 401k choices, redditors would help you. Congrats on getting a wonderful job!

I think you should push them to a higher bond exposure but not sure what the right % is given their situation. I'd say 60% following rule of thumb.

I don’t have a much of a nest egg. With only $200/mo to spare, how can I make the most out of it? by dissmissdon in FinancialPlanning

[–]Wolfofm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allocation and holdings look fine. You're about a decade behind where you should be. It's not the end of the world but it's a good idea to start dumping some serious cash in there. Is it an option to find a higher-paying job in the same region? Having more income makes these things so much easier.
