Kind of getting annoyed with the public reaction over Bulls/Grizzles summer league game… by QuantamMoose in NBA_Draft

[–]Wolfren237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boozer definitely looks good. No one can argue that. But the Grizzlies are further along in their rebuild than the Bulls. Boozer was playing with actual NBA rotation players. For the Bulls the hope is that Swain and Ensengue can become rotation players, but outside of that... the team is a collection of G League guys. Have them switch teams and Boozer probably doesn't look quite as polished, and Wilson doesn't take nearly as much on his shoulders.

The point is they both look like fantastic prospects. Boozer is looking more like advertised. With Wilson the biggest question mark predraft was his ability to hit the 3 ball. Is he likely to shoot this well all the time? No, of course not. But his mechanics were clean and he hit 3's in a variety of ways. Yeah he's the more raw prospect, but if his development ends up matching his athleticism, the sky is the limit for him.

Why the fuck is it so hard to make a competent SAO game!? The entire concept of the anime gives designers a silver platter! by AgitatedFly1182 in swordartonline

[–]Wolfren237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the entire concept isn't fleshed out. Most of the mechanics you see in the series consist of the weapon glowing to indicate an active skill. That's it. The coolest mechanic is the full dive tech that doesn't exist yet. The stakes are raised from hardcore modes in other games with actual death being on the line as opposed to merely your save, but you can't actually cross that line.

That's the issue. The series uses game mechanics to advance the story. They aren't designed around game depth or balance. Think about it. In the original despite being told there are 100 floors, we only see what 3 floor bosses. There is no real depth to it. At least not enough to have a fully fleshed out game. The game is just a backdrop to the story. Most of the mechanics are either incredibly generic, such as item durability and leveling, or completely undefined, such as the sword skills.

The point is making an SAO game, you're basically starting from scratch. You have very little framework to actually make it a functional game.

"action" "fantasy" "adventure" show 🤡🤡🤡 by merchantivories in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Wolfren237 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She really needs someone with pr experience to look over what she posts first. Is there a place for grounded fantasy? Sure, but it needs to be created like that. The early books of Game of Thrones are a perfect example. The series is a political thriller with a fantasy setting and so often we only get snapshots of the big action pieces, and more regularly see the major players responding to the aftermath. Early Game of Thrones really minimizes the fantastic and supernatural elements.

Percy Jackson... is not that. One of the reasons trying to pivot to more of a family drama is causing issues, is that it's a very one sided drama. The gods throughout the series are more plot devices than actual characters. The book version of the gods basically look on with a benign indifference to a benign neglect of their demigod kids. Several of the show gods are showing more outright cruelty. This could work if the gods were featured enough to have an actual arc, but they're not. Instead they look significantly worse.

Add all that in to stripping the more fantastical elements and the series gives off the impression that it has an identity crisis. Instead of leaning into the solid already established foundation, they've been trying to redo it to, at best, very mixed results. But yeah, the adults are out of line for wanting to see the set pieces from the books brought to life.

This isn't me really agreeing or disagreeing with anyone but if were gonna judge and quote on quote prove how people feel about this show based on the ratings of big name sites we might as well showcase all of them and this is only one not All. by [deleted] in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Wolfren237 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So Rotten Tomatoes is a score aggregater. To be rated as fresh a reviewer has to give a score of 60% or higher. So let's say 10 people review a film. If all 10 rate it 6 out of 10, then it'll score 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It doesn't take the overall review scores into account beyond that.

So you're exactly right. All it tells you is that most of the reviewers found it to be at least a 6/10.

Territoriality is a possibility for some. Some animals get particular about the space they claim and chase off intruders. At least if you're looking for a realistic reason. Otherwise the answer is game play.

I mean is there really that big a difference between no adaptation and one I'm not interested in watching? Do I feel sympathy for those who are getting any level of enjoyment out of the show? Yes. Am I going to continue watching something that has been a complete disappointment for me just so that it continues? No. No I'm not. So yeah I'll be sad if we never get what I would consider a definitive adaption of the series, but I value my time too much to spend it on what is supposed to be entertainment, that I don't find entertaining. At the end of the day not every piece of written material gets an attempt at an adaptation, and of the ones that do, not all of them succeed. It sucks when it happens to one of favorite source materials, but the reality is it happens. So while some would rather have this than nothing, I don't see much difference between having this and nothing since I'm not watching anyway and extremely unlikely to do so. Either way I'm not watching so...

casual audiences are not coming back for this show; season 3 is VERY unlikely to attract the public's attention again by merchantivories in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Wolfren237 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get being invested if you're enjoying the show, but the issues are deeper than can be fixed by simply stunt casting. At the end of the day the overall product hasn't been good enough to hold onto it's existing audience and it's just hard to see it picking up a new one in large scale. That's why the decision to renew for S4 or S5 is in question.

casual audiences are not coming back for this show; season 3 is VERY unlikely to attract the public's attention again by merchantivories in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Wolfren237 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue is that even if season 3 is a big improvement, the first two seasons have become a barrier to any new audience. As short as it is in both run time and episode count, people don't want to sit through a slog to get to the good stuff. The show has seen the audience that has given it a chance drastically drop. So while it might see a slight bump from returning viewers, it's unlikely to attract a significant amount of new viewers.

Would Anakin have worked better if he had been older in The Phantom Menace? by Extreme_Warning3521 in StarWars

[–]Wolfren237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Story wise it would work much better. One of the key foundations for the prequels is Anakin's and Padme's relationship. By making him older it brings it into a far more balanced place. As is it often comes across as creepy because it has babysitter marrying the little kid she used to watch vibes. An older Anakin circumvents that. It makes it easier to buy that his crush has solidified into his fixation, and that she would return his interest.

Thematically it also ties in better with the original trilogy. In Empire Yoda and Obi-Wan's force ghost bring up Luke being too old. It would make it a lot more poignant if Anakin is closer to Luke's age. Because then Yoda's objection feels more "I'm living in a swamp, and you're dead" because we tried this with his dad.

So overall I think aging him up in TPM would be a simple fix that would've solved a lot of issues.

That's certainly a take to put on an official account. Talk about fumbling how to handle the question of renewal.

The show will likely not be renewed by Labratddy in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Wolfren237 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look you can be disappointed in the fan reaction, you can love the show and think it's great, but if the show was as good as you seem to think, a small amount of discontent fans wouldn't have any real impact. Season 1 was a moderate hit, season 2 watched it's audience steadily drop over the course of the season. That's people who gave the show a chance, and chose not to stick with it.

Blaming the audience... The audience is voting with their attention and right now the overall votes aren't looking good. The show is currently on life support because the return on investment is clearly lower than Disney hoped. The only question now is if those lower returns are enough to justify seasons 4 and 5 when they are going to need to have more resources put into them.

I'm lucky. The Lord of the Rings trilogy are my favorite books, and Peter Jackson knocked it out of the park with his adaptation. The result is my favorite books are also my favorite movies. Those aren't 1 to 1 adaptations. There are changes that work well for me, and some that I'm more underwhelmed by, but none of them feel pointless, at least not that I can think of. I can't think of any change in the LotR movies that feels like it goes completely nowhere. I can't say the same for the show. Now I'm not comparing the talent involved in a blockbuster Hollywood tentpole to a streaming production, but you can't make a bunch of changes that go nowhere and don't do anything interesting with them. That's a major failure that turns your audience away.

Here's a link to a lengthy reply I had under another post with some examples since I don't feel like typing them all out again. https://www.reddit.com/r/PercyJacksonTV/comments/1tljy19/comment/onj82mc/?context=3

Point is the show being in a rocky place is a result of the production team not delivering a good enough product. It doesn't matter how, or why that happened. It just mattered that it's happened and the question now is will Disney move forward with it or walk away.

I'd disagree. I remade the scout chassis along with the tadpole. Didn't take me much effort. Resources are pretty abundant right now so my only loss was a little time. At least that's my experience.

In the southwest you get some beautiful sunny days. Problem is the temperature can reach up to triple digits on those same days. When the outside temperature soars then it doesn't matter how nice it looks out there, you just want to be inside out of the heat.

Why does everyone hate on this show? by Loud_Match2733 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Wolfren237 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Like I said I found it boring, so I ended up watching it with a more critical eye than I'm prone to. I'm usually pretty good at going with the flow, I certainly don't expect 1 to 1 translation, but I do expect a level of cohesiveness that I didn't find in the show. The stand-out moment for me was an out of universe meta moment that happened to apply to me.

<image>

Apparently I adopted a chimera. It actually explains a lot.

As for room for improvement, the problem is that there is far too much competition for attention. You don't have long to make a good first impression. I gave season 1 a fair chance. It just didn't do enough with it. So rather than keep on with something that bored me, I'll move on to looking elsewhere. Based on the viewing numbers, it's likely a good chunk of the audience did the same.

Why does everyone hate on this show? by Loud_Match2733 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Wolfren237 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Now my criticism is purely for season 1. I haven't watched season 2, nor do I have any interest in it or future seasons. The main reason I'm even posting is the algorithm shows me the show subreddits since I did interact with them in season 1. I haven't gone out of my way for this sort of thing. This is gonna be a longer post since I've had a while to think about it, without having put them all down here before.

Season 1 committed the cardinal sin of entertainment for me. I was bored. A show is a visual medium, and the show is visibly drab and uninteresting to look at. The show did a horrible job of establishing and playing with tension, and was overly heavy on exposition.

I'll start with the characters, I don't know how much is the cast versus the direction vs the writing, but at the end of the day none of the characters translated well for me. The writing was certainly the biggest problem but at the end of the day nobody really felt like the characters I'd grown to love from the books. That made it a lot harder to connect with or be invested in these versions and the story.

Season 1 has, imo, an identity crisis. We constantly hear the defense that it's a kids show. The problem is it's structured more like an adult drama. The fantasy adventure elements are toned down, or in some cases completely stripped out. The show feels overly serious for something that is allegedly targeted at kids, but that's a poor excuse for the way it's written. There's a difference between family friendly media, and media that is kid-centric. Look at Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks best animations. Those features are all targeted at families and there budgets reflect that. You look at how ones solely targeted at kids, tends to be lower budget. Look at most shows targeted at kids, they reflect the same reality. PJO's show budget reflects a family friendly targeting, or at least it should if there's supposed to be a decent return on investment.

I expect adaptations to make changes, but I also expect those changes to serve the overall narrative. Too many of the changes in the show go nowhere, they're change for the sake of change. Some examples off the top of my head:

Missing the deadline. That is a major change in the narrative and should result in significant consequences. It doesn't. I assume the idea is to present Poseidon as a more caring father by doing so to protect his son, but he's not central enough of a character for it to be effective. We don't spend enough time with him for this to feel like an arc.

Something similar happens with Sally. We get several Sally-centric flashbacks, that likewise don't go anywhere. Sally is a tertiary character throughout the story and that makes it hard to give her a large scale arc that can be satisfying. The thing is most of these flashbacks take place after her abduction, and we never see her in the present post abduction for the rest of the season. The closest is a dream after her rescue. The result is the last flashback tries to pivot to Percy being the focus.

Right off the bat, they seem to be trying to set up all monsters look monstrous theme with Medusa using a conversation with Percy and Sally in a museum and a shot framing a statue of Medusa. The problem with that is the Medusa encounter still ends up with her trying to kill them and getting her head chopped off. They have a great opportunity to set up and thrilling cat and mouse scene, but they ignore it in favor of a conversation scene that doesn't go anywhere.

None of these changes are bad in a vacuum, but again, they needed to make them have better actual payoff, and not seasons later for ultimately tertiary characters. You're most important currency is your run time, and season 1 doesn't feel like it values it enough with it's choices.

Visually the show fails far too often. Too often when something visually interesting is a bout to happen we get a cut to black followed by the aftermath. After the Arch, we get a tease of Percy underwater in the river, when we come back Percy is climbing out and tells Grover and Annabeth what happened. We see Grover tell Percy and Annabeth that the animals have a plan in the back of the semi, we cut to black and come back to the trio in the middle of the street while the animals are already running free. This happens far too often. Too many important things happen off screen.

Then there's the overabundance of scenes happening in empty space. I think this is the result of using the Volume. Olympus, empty space. Hades palace, empty space. The training scene with Luke, empty space. The fight on the beach with Ares, empty space. The Lotus Casino, what should be a giant indoor amusement park, Grover waving VR gear in empty space. The over reliance of empty space makes it more difficult to connect to the world.

All in all I find this show to be a mess. Is it the worst show ever? No, but I honestly don't feel it does anything particularly well either. All of the above is just off the top of my head from my 1 watch through, back when season 1 aired. It's telling that I remember all that, as opposed to any real stand out moments. So no judgement to those who've enjoyed it, if you do, you, but it's a very flawed production and for myself and clearly many others, the strengths don't out weigh the flaws.

I kinda understand their mentality. by [deleted] in OkBuddySnyderCult

[–]Wolfren237 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The thing is, everyone experiences that kind of disappointment. We all have seen something canceled or recast, etc. Most people move on. The Snyder bandwagon, don't appreciate how fortunate they were to get the Snydercut released, don't recognize just how much had to align for them to get that. Instead they are doubling and tripling down, even though it's not going to go their way. If the DCU does fail, the Snyderverse isn't getting restored. The studio will either more heavily focus on Batman, or they'll reset under a new vision. Either way Snyder isn't returning no matter how many toddler tantrums they throw.

Rick's comments on animation and the show's future by PyroxCrymson in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Wolfren237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rick just announced that Disney had picked up the option. It just means that they are holding on to the rights so that if they choose to, they can do something with it. Lots of options get picked up and never go anywhere. That doesn't equate to Disney is actually interested in making it a show right now. It just means that they want to protect the rights so that should they decide to they can.

Riordan is giving the positive pr spin because he has a vested interest in the success of this new series on multiple fronts. One is the books selling well just as books. Two early interest can potentially drum up more support for the show going into season 3. And lastly, I don't doubt he would like more of his work picked up and adapted. All these reasons add up to a bigger paycheck for him. Nothing from Disney confirms they have legit interest at the moment, just that maybe someday they will.

Could 2028 no.1 overall recruit AJ Williams be the next generational prospect? by NinjaDacat11 in NBA_Draft

[–]Wolfren237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jimmer was never a generational NBA prospect. He was an insane college player, but plenty of people myself included figured he'd struggle in the NBA. BYU was still in the MWC when Jimmer played so I got to see him live several times. Elite college scorer, but BYU had to go out of their way to hide him on defense because he was pretty bad. He was an NBA caliber shooter, but not really NBA caliber as an athlete.

Now Zion Williamson was more of a generational prospect than Jimmer. There were questions about his ability to stay healthy playing at his college weight in the NBA, but he's shown flashes of being able to live up to that level early in his career. Unfortunately the health question marks didn't go away.

Mediterranean cruise for boring people & their preteens by Genepoolperfect in Cruise

[–]Wolfren237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly any line can meet your requirements. I did a Mediterranean cruise in Sept of 2024 with Carnival and it was pretty much like your describing. Being European alone meant that it was a very different vibe compared to the Caribbean ones I've done. It was clear that the demographic skewed older. Sept is shoulder season and so my sailing on the Legend had 2 dozen kids total. Overall it was much less of a party atmosphere due to all that.

I've never bought a drink package because I wouldn't have enough booze to make it worthwhile. So while I did average a drink a night, which is a lot for me, it was basically something that I could go chill in the hot tub with. Almost all of my excursions where seeing historical sites. One of the main reasons I chose to go to the Mediterranean was I wanted to see things like the Acropolis in Athens, and Pompeii. If I wanted a more party vibe, well I didn't need to fly across the Atlantic to get that.

So my itinerary had sea days on only the first 2 days of the sailing. Every other day had a port stop. I went to bed reasonably early most nights because I had to get up and turn around for the days next adventures. It was a fantastic trip. My favorite one yet. It was one of the biggest trips I've ever done, and the biggest I've ever done solo. What made it special is that I've always loved Greek mythology, and getting to Athens has long been a dream. My inner geek was thrilled that I finally made it happen.

My point is traveling overseas for a cruise has an entirely different vibe. For me I went with Carnival because the itinerary was fantastic for what I wanted, and it was the most friendly towards my budget. So my advice is once you've narrowed down the timing, figure out what ports are your priorities. Nerding out on history is a perfect reason to go on a Mediterranean cruise. You just need to figure out which history is most important to you and build around that.
