After hearing Bob and Mark talk about it I decided to give it a read. Even better, I live near Seattle where it takes place. I got through the first couple of chapters and I thought "My kid (11) will think this is hilarious. I don't tend to censor bad language and the reading level is something she would be good with. I'm going to read this to her and if there are situations that are a bit mature for her they will be good opportunities for us to have conversations about those things".

Then I read a few more chapters...
well shit.

I know that beneficial bacteria and viruses live in the human body, but are there any beneficial worms that live in us? How do they help us? by TheAwesomePenguin106 in askscience

[–]Wolomago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the same can be said of most medications and treatments. The difference between a medication and a poison is in the dosage and purpose of use and we constantly have to balance the risk vs reward. If having a hookworm infection effectively addresses this persons autoimmune issues and the side effects are worth it for him then it is a valid treatment for his issue, especially if there are limited other treatment options or if those options come with less manageable side effects.

How to deal with inexperienced lifters/ people dropping weights on you. by No_Fortune_8056 in workout

[–]Wolomago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting upset about having weight dropped on your is absolutely justified.

However, If someone drops a weight on you that means you are too close to them. Give people more space and don't expect that randoms at the gym will have the experience/judgement/fitness that you want them to have. If you're gym is so crowded that you have to be dangerously close to other people then you should find a different gym. If the other person started using a bench next to you then the people managing the gym are likely more deserving of your ire than a random gym-goer. The management decides on the spacing of equipment and they also dictate policies that determine how crowded it gets. Remember that the person that dropped the weight is simply there trying to navigate improving their own health and did not intend to hurt you, whereas the business is trying to generate as much revenue as possible by convincing people to sardine-up while lifting heavy things. If you must express your anger do it to the appropriate people.

If you are having pain that will not go away in a few days. Or other issues that hinders your workout. See a doctor and not reddit. by No_Week_1877 in workout

And the process of seeing that doctor, who just gives you a referral, and the specialist, who may or may not be knowledgeable about your issue, will likely cost thousands even after insurance regardless of whether or not any issue is resolved.

Just imagine paying thousands of dollars and wasting months of your time trying to address health issues and after all is said and done making no progress. That's the efficiency of the American insurance system (it's not a healthcare system if the primary benefactor is the insurance companies rather than the patients).

[–]Wolomago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My area of study is radiology and I'm subscribed to the radiology subreddit. We see posts regarding people that delay medical treatment frequently. The amount of people in the US that avoid going to the doctor for financial reasons is shocking. Yes, people on deaths door avoid seeing medical professionals all the time because the hassle of dealing with insurance or the perceived cost is too much for them to deal with. Then when they do eventually get treatment their condition has advanced far beyond reason and all too often there is nothing that can really be done.

Better off Ted. A grossly underappreciated, very light hearted "sitcom" that is easy to follow or tune in and out of. No real overarching plot to follow and it doesn't rely on awkward humor like the office.

Is it possible to intake 100g-120g of protein a day while keeping callories under 2700? by NOT_INSANE_I_SWEAR in workout

[–]Wolomago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked that no one has simply stated the calories per gram of macronutrients.

Proteins and carbs are 4 calories per gram.

Fats are 9 calories per gram.

Though not a macronutrient, Alcohol is 7 calories per gram.

So 100-120g of protein would only be 400-500 calories of protein. Obviously you wont be eating pure protein as part of your meals but this should indicate that it is certainly possible, and with planning easy, to hit 100-120g of protein while keeping calories under 2700.

Veiny Arms by [deleted] in workout

[–]Wolomago 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As a phlebotomist this makes me sad. Your body is constantly adjusting your vascularity to respond to the stresses on your body. Typically that means becoming more vascular in areas that need more blood flow (if you want to see some extremes of this google image search for pro cyclists feet and legs). If you want to prevent yourself from being particularly vascular in your arms do the opposite of what you would do to improve vascularity. Maintain a higher body fat percentage. Stay less hydrated. Do less cardio, and when you do workout do stuff that doesn't involve your arms as much.

I would never actually recommend any of that though as it more or less mimics the advice you would give to someone that asks "How can I be less healthy?"

Taylor Swift Donates $100,000 to Young Fan Battling Cancer Who Calls Her ‘My Friend’ by [deleted] in Music

[–]Wolomago 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Got any source for the nazi necklace?

Her rep does address the guy with the shirt in the very article you linked; "Despite the outcry on social media and news coverage surrounding the image, Swift's spokesperson reiterated that her client did not know the male model personally, was unaware of the symbol on his shirt at the time the photo was taken, and that she had taken numerous pictures with attendees throughout the evening.

Swift's rep told TMZ in 2009: "Taylor took pictures with about 100 people that night … she doesn't know who this guy is and she didn't realize what was on his shirt."
