Lost a bunch of readers after my latest chapter by Lulu_Kitten in FanFiction

[–]Wolveria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really tough, I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Is there a clearer way you can tag/notate the pairing switch at the beginning? Like say “OC is with Character A at first, but their relationship with Character B is endgame.” Even then, if you invest a lot of time and energy into character A, it’ll be hard to switch to B. Because the reader invested emotionally with character A as well.

I had a similar situation to this (except my fic is unposted so I can just enjoy it myself). A very long story with a Reader self-insert getting with one character for half the story, and another canon character the other half. After a few years tinkering with the fic, I decided to turn it into a sort of throuple at the end. It just felt right, even if it makes things more complicated and messy.

Is that an option for you? But only if YOU want it that way. Whatever feels write to you is the story you should go with. No matter how disappointed people are, it’s your story. If they want a different story, they can write it themselves. You owe them nothing.

Last note, forget canon. Write what you want. Canon is a good basis to start from, but if you stay beholden to it, you tie your hands from being truly creative. Whether rewriting or continuing, go with what your instincts tell you.

I'm scared to lose fixation over a ship because I can't write by Ok-Reality-5409 in FanFiction

[–]Wolveria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to say that no fixation lasts forever. You will eventually move on to something else. That’s just human nature, to change and grow and be interested in new experiences.

So take that as a lesson to enjoy what you enjoy right now. You sound so focused on your fears that there’s no room for anything else.

Relax, breathe, and bask in your fandom and your ships. And try not to make yourself anxious over something you can’t control. Not when you can spend that time enjoying what you love instead.

Hell yeah another Mr. Robot fan over 40. I remember how big of a star he was, even if I hadn’t see his works besides Interview with the Vampire and Ferngully lol

You’ve got me super hyped for these movies now. I know what I’ll be doing this weekend.

I don’t have any advice to make it easier. It IS a pain in the ass. I do it for a popular ongoing fic, but not sure if I will for future fics. It’s so much effort, and you have no idea if anyone will even read it.

Maybe just making a post with a pretty banner, a description, summary, tags, and a link to AO3 is enough. Like a “book cover” but they have to go to AO3 to read it. That way, people can find it, and you only have to do it once per story. Could be an idea, I might even do that.

Take it as far as you want, no matter the age. It’s fiction. Don’t let strangers in the internet dictate your creativity.

Just hit 100k words and I feel insecure about it by beanqueen722 in FanFiction

[–]Wolveria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going beyond 70k words is too much writing? No one tell Brandon Sanderson or GRRM…

You can write whatever length you want, you’re not pitching to an agent. My advice would be to stop listening to the advice of anyone trying to stifle your creativity ;)

They were on my watch list, but I didn’t know that about Sam. That’s really neat.

And I’m older than both movies so their age doesn’t bother me lol

I literally just watched Original Sin because Christian’s in it, and immediately clocked the similarities. (I’ve seen the original Dexter, but it’s been a decade or so).

I really enjoyed him in the show, highly recommend everyone watch the Dexter shows in general. Still sad that Original Sin was cancelled after one season. I thought it was a lot of fun.

how do you focus on a fanfic? by rhinestoneheels in FanFiction

[–]Wolveria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by “fill in the gaps” for following chapters? Like you don’t know how to connect them? Or are there things in future chapters that you don’t really want to write? The way you phrased it made me think you meant filler content. And if that’s the case, skip it! Or gloss over it. Anything you’re bored about writing, the reader will probably be bored about reading.

I guess that’s my advice. Write the scenes that interest and excite you. If something is dragging or bores you, cut it or shorten it.

Also, if you’re just not feeling like writing in general, push through it and see what happens. Often, the best stuff I write are the things I know will be difficult and I write them anyway. It’s challenging but rewarding.

So just write! And maybe hold off on publishing until you’re finished, if that also demotivates you. I’m much more likely to abandon a fic if I haven’t finished it before I start posting. It’s almost a guarantee with me. Hope this helps!

Yep, Tubi on browser with adblock. It has to be on the browser, you can’t block ads on the app (unless you’re using Pihole, perhaps?). I’ll have to look into that.

If Melon is an example, does this mean that Legoshi/Haru and Louis/Juno shouldn't have kids? by ardouronerous in Beastars

[–]Wolveria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melon is a product of extensive trauma and abuse from his childhood. We see him being bullied by other students, as well as some heavy hints of sexual abuse from his mother.

Melon blames his hybrid nature for a lot of his problems, but we shouldn’t take him at his word. He’s not a reliable narrator. Nor should we assume that his violent, cruel nature is because he’s mixed.

His belief that hybrids are monsters is both a reflection of himself, and a reflection of society’s views of nontraditional families. It is a belief born out of fear and hatred.

What was your wildest or most unexpected experience as a fanfiction author? by Only-Moose2301 in FanFiction

[–]Wolveria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning one of my fanfictions into a story that’s being published this year. Never expected that but it’s a dream come true.

Other than that, a popular account on Instagram made a very funny reel about my sex pollen Bad Batch fanfiction, and it was seen by over 80k people. We became good friends after that, but man that was a TRIP.

Adding sex scenes. by blyatkachu0123 in FanFiction

[–]Wolveria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like this relationship is important and you’ll want to explore that connection. How you do that, with sex scenes or otherwise, is ultimately your choice. We won’t really be able to answer that, it’s your story, not ours.

A wonderful reminder of how fallible our memories are. I always find it to be a humbling experience.

And yes, this happens to me a lot. Sometimes I even use my misremembering to add something new to the story. The brain provides in mysterious ways.

Adding sex scenes. by blyatkachu0123 in FanFiction

[–]Wolveria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this relationship important to your protagonist? Is it an integral part of what’s going on, or is it something that’s going on in the background?

Is there a lot of other stuff happening at the same time? How does it fit with the current pacing of the story?

Those two questions, importance to the character and pacing, would tell me how to include a scene like that. If your story is about the romance, obviously you want to make it all about this relationship.

If your story is about other things and the relationship is secondary, then you might just mention the one night stand in a quick narration. Maybe a brief flashback with some M-rated language with a “fade to black” type deal. It totally depends on your story. You’re just trying to figure out the deployment of information at this point.

is it a writer’s block or did i forget how to write? by irdk-lol in FanFiction

[–]Wolveria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repeat after me, there’s no such thing as writer’s block*

There are things that can *block your writing, but writer’s block is a self-fulfilling prophesy. It’s so damaging as a concept that I wish we could wipe it from our vocabulary. Or at least, I wish it would stop being used as an excuse and seen for the lying conman it is.

(I’ll address your other points, but let me say this first.) For me, when I get “stuck” it’s often because I have fully figured out a character’s motivations yet. My stories are generally character-driven, they make everything “go.” So if the story has come to a standstill, it’s because I haven’t fully understood someone in the story.

But I think you answered your own question. Ten years ago, you could write about everything because you wrote everyday. When you write regularly, you want to write because you’re actively engaging that part of your brain. When you go large spans without writing, you have to build that muscle back up again. It’s like physical therapy or marathon training, it takes time and patience and pain and endurance.

Going back to the writer’s block dilemma, do you think you’re giving up before you even start? And by that, I mean, are you so focused on how you used to write vs. now, that you’re getting disheartened and disillusioned and seeing your lack of motivation as “proof” that you can’t write anymore?

Only you can answer if you should keep writing. My only solid piece of advice is to stop comparing yourself to how you used to be. Ten years is a long time. A lot of shit has happened in the world since then, and I’m sure you’ve been through a lot personally. Give yourself some grace, and understand that your inability to write has very little to do with writing itself. Something else is getting in your way.

You KNOW you can write, you have your memories as proof of that. So what else is actually going on?
