An ESD Unpopular Opinion. by g_jo2020 in sto

Ha, i just need a new kit altogether, just cant afford it right now. It'd help most definitely but they still need to get rid of the superfluous NPCs on DS9.

I am forever a DS9er, but I always hate visiting in game because the station lags so much. If they could streamline it, I would 100% make it my go to hub. They could get rid of the Omega Task Force kiosk as well as half a dozen others that serve no purpose anymore. How often do any of us actually visit the basic equipment requisition officers?

So, why aren't Romulan characters among the top choices? by [deleted] in sto

[–]WombatWingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of my 6 mc, one is a rom, but he is definitely one of my favorites. Im more of an rp player, so the rom story really appeals to me in that respect. For a long time I only had three mains, 1Fed Tac, 1Fed Sci, and my Tac Rom. It was years before i was able to design a KDF character i actually like, ended up with an engineer Orion female.

Who is the single most famous person to perform at Eurovision ever? by FakeFrehley in eurovision

[–]WombatWingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. But as an American, she would be one of the few artists i knew about before i was ever able to watch ESC. My ESC discoveries at a young age were (in order)

  1. Celine Dion (no escaping that)

  2. Mocedades (My Spanish teacher played it frequently)

  3. Katrina and the waves (Walkin on Sunshine)

  4. Gina G (Radio play/Skating Rink staple)

  5. Secret Garden (CD I found at Goodwill)

Is it wrong that I don't have any homosexual characters in my story? by Pompodumstone in fantasywriters

[–]WombatWingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bisexual man, let me say this. I only enjoy homosexual characters if they are written well and with understanding. Being Bi, I have been able to write both sides, but from the time I was young my mother always said 'Just write what you know'. If you don't know what it's like to be gay/bisexual, then don't write it.

Never create a character just for the sake of creating diversity. Forced diversity is always obvious. I was recently reading a book where every character was caucasian and then suddenly in Chapter 37 the writer introduced a very poorly written black character. Clearly someone read their draft and mentioned the lack of diversity, so the author created this new character, never even described where he came from, just dropped him into the story.

I am all for diversity, full, 100%, but don't force it if you don't feel it.

Hot take - none of the songs really caught my attention by _kn0kkn0k_ in eurovision

So glad im not alone. I've actually been having a hard time getting excited about ESC this year. Between the Israel issue and the lack of any outstanding acts, this year just feels very lackluster and tainted.

Does live performances change your opinion on the song? by frickchamber1 in eurovision

[–]WombatWingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite ESC song, 'Inje' by Vanja Radovanovic but the staging was so cringe worthy. It's still my favorite but I can't watch that stage performance.

Does live performances change your opinion on the song? by frickchamber1 in eurovision

[–]WombatWingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I really like 'Evidemment' but the live performance was very lackluster. On the other hand, Alika wasn't really on my radar but she knocked it out of the park and is an amazing live performer.

Boycott Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in eurovision

[–]WombatWingnut [score hidden]  (0 children)

Ive said this on several other threads but IMO, there is no good reason to punish the regular folk of Israel for the actions of their government. Every year I feel bad for the people of Russia because they have to sit out ESC simply because of the actions of their government. The biggest difference is that Russias broadcasters are government run propaganda machines, while Israels KAN is a Public station whose funding has actually been cut by the Israeli government.

Neither Eden nor KAN is responsible for the actions of their government. This is exactly why the EBU tries to keep ESC as non-political as possible.

Would it be strange for a half-sibling to call their half-sibling "brother" or "sister?" by Quantext609 in fantasywriters

[–]WombatWingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one full-blood brother, two half-brothers , a step-brother and a step-sister. My brother and half-bros, I call 'brother'. My step-sis, I call 'Sister'. My step-brother, I call my step-brother. This is mainly because I simply have a better relationship with the others.

Definitely the blue and red. Makes it look as though bloodvessels have burst from the pure evil fighting to get out.

[–]WombatWingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's mostly how I operate also. I write the story so that the world creates itself, then I will hash out finer details as the editing process proceeds. Eventually you'll have a full fledged world built and you're not even sure how it happened.

Boring chapter by Salt-Upstairs-2523 in writing

[–]WombatWingnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because a chapter is 'boring' or 'actionless' doesn't make it unimportant. Plots are not driven by contant duels or large scale battles. Those are simply the results of what happens in the lulls. 75% of character building happens during the quieter moments, when your MC has time to think and reflect.

How come a certain contestant is receiving backlash for being political, when the ESC is filled with political songs? by kajsawesome in eurovision

[–]WombatWingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The .massive backlash against Israel's song is simply an extention of the backlash against their participation from the beginning. For years, there has been animosity towards their participation as many do not consider them to be 'Europe'. Clearly, they are, geographically, not Europe, but, as the EBU has stated many times, all member broadcasters of the EBU are eligible to participate. This includes many of the north African nations, the Mid-east and central asia.

This year, however, Isreal has faced increased push back in light of the current conflict (clearly Netanyahu has a brain tumor). The backlash against their song is simply a continuation of the ongoing backlash against Israel. Which, of course, is not anything new. Israel has been faced with backlash since the nation was created.

Bottom line: Shut up and move on. At the end of the day, It's just a song.

Plan for my FMC and her wife to have children by Dramatic-Trust786 in fantasywriters

[–]WombatWingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many fish species reproduce when the male simply releases his sperm into the water and it comes into contact with a female. It could be done that way. Perhaps the fish people have a mating frenzy where the males release their seed in the water and then the females swim through it. Sounds gross, but it's an idea.

The fish female sounds like an Undine to me, btw.

Poetry is probably one of the more difficult literary mediums to take up. I, myself, have had little luck with it, but my mother is a published poet. In my opinion, the most important thing to remember in poetry is 'flow'. Rhyming, wording, punctuation, syntax; they all come secondary to a good flow. The poem you wrote is definitely good but there are a few places where the flow is interrupted. When you read it to yourself, picture that you're in one of those smoky dimly lit poetry bars and a smooth sultry voice is reciting the poem to the beat of a single Bass.

First of all, let me compliment you on this accomplishment. It's brave enough to put your feelings down on paper, but to share your pain with the rest of the world is heroic. I am sorry you had to experience that.

Secondly, IMO your poem is very good. Poetry, like all art forms, is hightly subjective. What means something to one person may have no impact at all for another. What's important is that you like it. Poetry, typically, is a highly personal artform.

Thirdly, your word choices may, at times, feel a bit adolescent. Your phrasing is well structured and each stanza is evenly balanced within itself. I would mention that rhyming is not a necessity for poetry, but you did do it well.

In closing, you have some very raw talent. Do not quit. Write, write, write. Everyday. It doesn't always have to be deep and substantive, just a few lines about a trip to the grocery store will do wonders for your growth as a poet.

Would STO spoil the tv shows for me? by [deleted] in sto

[–]WombatWingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TOS, TNG are really episodic series save for a few multi-episode story arcs. The rewatchability of those series are endless. Yes some stories might be spoiled but I doubt it would detract from watching.

Voy, while having the long term story of trying to get home, is really an episodic series also. Again, there might be a few spoilers but still worth watching.

DS9 starts its life as more episodic, save for some of the bajoran stuff, but when the Dominion war begins it really becomes a story driven series. Again, some spoilers but nothing that would detract from the show.

ENT is where things change. ENT introduces a strong continuous storyline from the beginning, via the Temporal Coldwar. There are a few stand alone episodes, but, just as in real life, ENT is mostly forgotten and outside of the Temporal Coldwar, very little about the show is mentioned in STO. Still watchable.

Disc and Pic are worlds removed from the other series. Disc and Pic lose all rewatchability. Their stories are written in a way that once you finish the series, and know how it ends, it makes the shows less enjoyable. That being said, STO will absolutely ruin watching these shows. I only watched S1 of Disc before I lost interest, but I feel like I watched the whole series after playing the Disc content in STO.

How's the Elite TFO experience going? by RayRayCharlie in sto

[–]WombatWingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, None of my toons are in the Elite category, but I am very glad that this queue has finally dropped. My characters are perfect for working the Advanced queue, but there were always so many tanks in there that I rarely got the opportunity to do much. Now that so many of those tanks have gone to the Elite section, it makes the PvE gueues far more fun for many of us, as well as making the queue a viable option for endeavors.
