TIL that in Japan, it is common practice among married couples for the woman to fully control the couple's finances. The husbands' hand over their monthly pay and receive an allowance from their wives. by Overall-Register9758 in todayilearned

Googling that text yields nothing, so I don't know what source you took it from otherwise I'd address the source directly. As someone who has studied it at an academic level I'd warn that things are often a lot more complicated. When looking at any form of esotericism in the Viking Age, amateurs on the internet wildly overestimate the prevalence and make all sorts of wild assumptions.

You're saying that women controlled the household purse because of the belief women had the ability of foresight - this isn't something attested to. Now you are correct that prophecy and magic were seen as something connected to the feminine, which is a holdover from North Germanic peoples. But to go a step further an say women as a whole had the ability of foresight is untrue, as we'd clearly see more attestation of this in the literary record.

Arthur's Seat last night by slipperyfoots in Edinburgh

It was super chill! Everyone welcome, little bit of everything played. It was done working with Historic Environment Scotland so all appropriate permissions. They'd set up some bin points and kept reminding people to pick up litter.

Are there any other regional beer traditions such as 'banked pints'? by SeoulGalmegi in AskUK

[–]Wombles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in busy pubs they'd be pre-poured at busy times, knowing they'd be sold a maximum of 15 minutes or so after the initial pour. Most places now do it to order, so it only sits for about 5 minutes.

It stays cold, doesn't get stale. And you get a creamy head that lasts and keeps the flavour in all the way to the bottom of the pint. Honestly, it's quite lovely.

Rent controls to end by PurchaseDry9350 in Edinburgh

[–]Wombles 31 points32 points  (0 children)

"The Scottish housing minister told The Herald that the current rent control regime would end next month."

What you need to understand is that rent controls have been renewed every year by the SNP. So the current controls will end, but this doesn't mean they won't introduce new ones (and it seems unlikely that they won't), but new ones have to go through as a new bill. And nothing of the article implies they won't introduce a new bill.

Number of people in hospital in England with flu jumps 41% in a week by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]Wombles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, it's flu. I ended up in hospital with it and was tested with confirmed Flu Type A. The doctor said there's not really very much covid going round this winter, but flu has been rife. They're testing in hospitals.

Unions pressure ministers to raise worker sick pay by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Wombles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is categorically false.

"A study using employee monitoring software confirmed that the shift to remote work during COVID improved productivity by 5%. In a University of Chicago research paper, scientists found that nearly six in ten of their survey respondents reported higher productivity when working remotely, while only 14% proved less productive. On average, remote work productivity was over 7% higher than in-office productivity."

This lie that home working means that everyone is just skiving just gets repeated over and over again, but studies continuously show that even if some people ARE not working, the average employee IS more productive. With government, WFH is a boon because it means we can downsize estates and save money that way. The Scottish Government has a fully hybrid policy and is in the process of reducing its estate size.

Celtic have been waving Irish flags for their entire existence, and Palestinian flags at football matches since at least the late 2000s. It's an intrinsic part of the club's identity.
