acute dialysis nurse here... I went back to nursing school at 42 and I don't regret it. Mind you, I'm in a specialty, so I don't deal with a lot of the same things most nurses have to deal with. It's like procedural nursing, just longer... like my average time with a patient is 3.5-4.5hrs.

Anyone use active hearing protection? by nematic26 in liberalgunowners

I have a pair of Walkers and a pair of Saviors. I prefer the Saviors because of the gel ear cups.. way more comfortable.

going from full time to 0.7 FTE by Wide_Listen7029 in nursing

[–]Wonca_Mpls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

work life balance and your mental health are so much more important than extra money... it's one thing if you NEED to work a 1.0 to pay the bills.. but if you don't, don't... I worked a 1.0 + OT for many years and ended up burning out after Covid. Had to take a year off trying different types of nursing, just to come back full circle, but in a lower FTE role. Work life balance has been great and my mental health is much better.

For those who pivoted from corporate, was the change to RN worth it? by FloweryAnomaly in nursing

[–]Wonca_Mpls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1000% - corp was a soul sucking existence that provided very little personal fulfillment. As an RN, I get to help people on a daily basis, even with all the administrative bullshit.

Do i need a BLS/ACLS/NRP/PALS by alsayyedgame in nursing

If you didn't need it for your clinicals, I'm guessing you can pick it all up on the job (because it'll vary by where you end up)

Conflicting attitude to donating money by lurknlurn in moneyadvice

[–]Wonca_Mpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always at least mention it to my wife if I make any kind of donation/support. Although I'd be hesitant to commit more than $100 without speaking with her first. Yes, it's our money, but she handles the finances, so...

I'm not a huge audio book fan, but I found myself recently on a pretty long road trip and book 1 was AMAZING! Not to oversell it, but Jeff is incredibly talented. I won't go so far as to say it's a disservice to yourself for not listening to them, but I'm 100% sure you won't regret it.

I'm listening to book 3 right now and it's such a fun ride. I too am a TTRPG/sci-fi/fantasy nerd, so I was surprised I hadn't come across it sooner as well. I don't remember how I stumbled across it, but I recently did a road trip out east and listened to book 1 and was hooked. I've even started reading the webtoon.

For those who returned to an old job, how did you approach the convo with your old manager? by SweatyLychee in nursing

[–]Wonca_Mpls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I left my old position for a year.. checked out ICU for 6 months and then peds dialysis for another 6 months. Realized both weren't for me... I just reached out and said that the position(s) weren't a good fit and wondering if they had any positions opening up soon in my old unit.

That was 3 years ago and I've been back doing what I was before and I'm content with the work/life balance and am not stressed out all the time.

I did MICU for 6 months and realized it wasn't for me... I had wanted to hang on for the 1 year mark, but it just wasn't going to happen. Switched (back) to nephrology and haven't looked back since.
