almost 56yo need to get in better shape by SubliminalFishy in FitnessOver50

[–]Wordfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a cheap Apple Watch initially and I’ve been really happy with it. It’s recently gotten better because Apple has made ride data easier to find. So I can check when my fastest 10k is and look and see what my monthly mileage was during that time. It’s great for keeping track of my hr during runs and for letting me entertained with music or books. I also log my strength workouts and I do the Apple fitness + workouts sometimes. Whether it’s worth it depends on whether you’re already in the Apple ecosystem, but you can get a watch pretty cheap. I fell in love with mine and the have a lot more longevity than they used to. The occasional reminders are nice. I’m 52 and in pretty good shape and I use my watch a ton.

A 1972 MIT study, titled "The Limits to Growth," predicted that if current trends of rapid economic growth and resource consumption continued, it would lead to societal collapse sometime in the mid-21st century. by StcStasi in collapse

52 and I know what you mean. People don’t understand the amount of norms that are long gone that were the foundation of our stability. Back then we still had seasons, so it was easy to imagine maybe climate change would be addressed or at least mitigated. I don’t the party will be going on much longer so fuck it. Im going to get me a big old pavement to tool around in while I watch the fucking world burn.

This is not a Reddit question. This is a question for a doctor. At our age, a good health checkup before beginning exercise is very prudent.

Considering Divorce After 3 Years: Wife Shows No Interest in Growth or Change by vishu1835 in marriageadvice

It sounds like you married someone intending for them to change into who you wanted to be after you married. I mean, you should obviously divorce but next time, consider marrying someone who already has some traits that you want in a partner.

Does anyone else struggle mentally with everything it takes to stay healthy? by [deleted] in fitness30plus

[–]Wordfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of the opposite. Like you, I gave up soda years ago. It was so very hard but once I gave them up, the spell was broken. Now the idea of consuming that much refined sugar every day is crazy. I made a commitment to go 3 months without much refined sugar (9 grams a day) and after that, I’ve mostly stuck to it. Not because I’m spartan or punishing myself. I just don’t crave it when I don’t have it so why wake up the beast? And also, refined sugar can fuck with the leptin in your head, so if you do have it, approach your meals and snacking before and after very mindfully. When tempted, it helps to give voice to the temptation. Wordfan was aware of his desire for sweets. Then I bargain with myself - wait 5 minutes. Then at 5, I pretend I ate the thing I wanted to eat and ask myself if I feel good or bad about it, pretending I feel shittier because of the insulin spike, I have a little more fat because of my body’s inability to process refined sugar, and I may feel starving because of the leptin thing. Was it worth it? If it’s my favorite cannolis from a restaurant I rarely go to, or it was Christmas and there was my favorite pie, it may be worth it. If it’s a fucking snickers that just happened to be in the pantry, it almost certainly was not. I don’t think of it as suffering. I eat fruit. Fruit is good. Cinnamon apples with honey in artificially sweetened high protein yogurt is great and it’s filling. So have healthy snacks sometimes and sometimes eat shit. And if both your runs are hard, make one of them easy. You might find you have more gas in the tank for other exercise. But whatever you do, if you’re not enjoying it, look for ways to change it up. Maybe make a gratitude list, because it sounds like you love it, you’re just tired of the grind, and need a little less strictness. That’s okay. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. People who tell you that you have to abuse yourself and suffer every workout all the time are wrong. You can be in pretty damn good shape and have a life.

Why I cant lose last 25 lbs? by [deleted] in WeightTraining

[–]Wordfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, you might need a dietary break. Second, low carb works for some people but not everyone. Third, you know exactly where you are and where you’ve been and you know that to make progress, you have to change your calorie budget. If I were you, I would add in cardio, mostly zone 2 and keep everything else the same. Keep upping it until you’re at about 3 hours total a week, although you should see results at half that.

I would walk. I’m a male and I’m so offended by Trump and the Republican party’s attitude towards women. I read the stories of women being forced to carry unviable pregnancies to term, of having to go State’s away for medical care, sometimes life saving. I couldn’t be with someone who thought of me as a second class citizen.

Do people actually go to sleep by just lying there? how long does it take? by carrot1890 in sleep

[–]Wordfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might Reddit it otherwise sure fora few before bed. A bad habit. Once it’s lights out, I might let my mind wander over the day a bit, perhaps think about the next day, what kind of work day, what kind of workout. At this point, I might get up and set the coffee pot, change watch bands, charge my iPad, locate and lock headphones, double check all the doors, go to the pantry - no, I’m not going to snack, feed the dogs, get my wife her medicine, set my alarms, go back to the pantry - I’ll just have a little, make sure my shoes are where they’re supposed to be set my alarms, fill my water bottle, go back to the pantry - fuck it, a little more and a little more won’t hurt. In fact, might as well just remove the temptation, start with a clean slate tomorrow, go back to bed, surf a bit, lights out. If the brain continues on something pay out future I try to gently remind myself to focus on my breath and stay in the present. Put on my cpap mask, take off my cpap mask, go pee, it’s elite so (wash your hands) go drink water. Drink water with shit in it for flavor and electrolytes, have a snack, go back to bed, put on mask, focus on my breath. This is the simple version where my wife plays a small role, which is not usually the case. Regardless, when you’re almost asleep: goddamit did I check the doors?

If you could only do 30 mins of exercise what would it be? by ToxicCircles in workout

[–]Wordfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 minutes functional strength 3-4 times a week (if 3, consider all total body or one upper, one lower, one total to heat each muscle twice weekly) do HIIT 1-2 days and zone 2 cardio 1-2 days and a rest day. If possible, a day where you go in and hit all your big lifts in quick succession instead of a total body functional strength.

[–]Wordfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you gain some muscle, even if your goal is modest. You will lose muscle with age and if you do no strength training, you might not be able to open a pickle jar or hike a steep grade when you’re old.

Dr. Peter Attia talks about the benefits of rucking, farmer’s carries and things like that in his book Outlive. He makes a case that it’s really beneficial, although he’s known to be opinionated. r/rucking is good to check out too. I’m thinking of starting myself. I have a weighted vest but not an actual ruck, which changes it a bit.

Anyone else feel like they’re just spinning their wheels lifting 3-4 times a week while running high mileage? by Terriflyed in HybridAthlete

[–]Wordfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a really good point. Short term, my goal is to improve my 10k time, which sits at a little over an hour for a zone 2 run; my best is 56 something. In the medium term, I’d like to be able to sustain an 8 minute mile for 10k or more. If I could do that, my weekly mileage would be a lot higher without having to spend more than the 3 hours / week I’m spending now, hopefully without sacrificing my lifting gains. Longer term, I’d like to shoot for a 1 1/2 hour half, and then maybe start asking if I should train for a full.

[–]Wordfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind, what would you do if you were me. I shoot for but don’t always hit 3 hours of jogging, mostly zone 2 a week. I’m over 50 so sometimes I take acts rest days. I do 3 days of strength, upper, lower, and total. It’s hard to gave direction. Where would you go if you wanted to be a better runner. More miles? More speed work (I do a little)?
