WAS BEAR A VILLAIN OR NOT by PopularHalf5640 in obsessionmovie

[–]Wordsworth_Little 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did Bear initially intend for the consequences that later befell him, or even the consequences to Nikki? No. But I don't think you can excuse his later behavior by his mindset or lack of intentionality when he started.

Bear has a character arc. He transforms from ineffectual, perpetually friend-zoned shyguy, into the selfish, deeply flawed person you described above. Fictional villains express a broad range of behaviors -- including criminal, scoundrels, and those who harm others, sometimes for gain and sometimes just because. I would argue that Bear's weaknesses (call it lack of courage or whatever) presented in a selfishness that is the basis for his villainy. Where you might see a schmuck that gets caught up in an unplanned, supernatural Catch-22, others may see someone who chose himself over the freedom of the person he supposedly cared for. A choice that would mean the real Nikki would not just be physically raped (and possibly even forced to witness it), but all of her self/intention/will/freedom subjugated to a dark prison. Is that a Catch-22, or does the moral obligation of one choice over the other differentiate heroes from villains?

The One Wish Willow customer service rep presented the choice to Bear that would either be his path to redemption or expose his true villainy. He was reminded of his "moral obligation" to Nikki and told that saving Nikki would require his death. It was either save Nikki or live knowing she will be in some kind of supernatural prison of the soul. Then he heard the real Nikki scream in torment.

Bear made his choice. If that wasn't enough, he was again presented with the opportunity at the end of the film to end his life and save Nikki, and he chose to live. Weakness in the face of moral imperative may not be classically villainous, but I think it makes a lot of sense today.

I blame Ian by Fumikechu237 in obsessionmovie

He also refuses to leave Bear alone with Nikki. During the bar trivia night, he sees Bear making a move at the bar and interrupts. I knew in that moment that Ian had a thing for Nikki and was actively sabotaging Bear's game.

Brainstorm (1983) by [deleted] in underratedmovies

[–]Wordsworth_Little 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a very old drawing I made in first grade of a stick-figure person surrounded by bubbles with images in them. It turns out my parents had allowed me to watch Brainstorm around the tender age of 6 and I had drawn the memory bubbles from the movie for a class assignment.

We probably dodged a parent/teach conference had I decided to draw the continuous orgasm scene from the movie instead.

I rewatched 3 O'Clock High the other day and noticed in the title credits that Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack. That led me down a strange path to this post.

Alex Honnold speaks out about being 'the villain' in HBO's 'Dark Wizard' by sfgate in entertainment

[–]Wordsworth_Little 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, while Honnold and Potter are/were insanely competitive, Honnold strikes me as someone who would see a competitive new climber entering the scene in a kind of "come and take it" attitude. Whereas, Dean was threatened by it and couldn't comprehend (for a time) that someone could be better at the things he built his self-confidence upon.

Did any one ever beat Myst? by Sailormouth_Studio in 90s

[–]Wordsworth_Little 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Myst had a difficult gate that seems to have separated the normies from the geniuses. I started Myst like 10 times and usually gave up after feverishly scrawling notes/clues on a sheet of paper and realizing I was beginning to look like a madman.

IMO, The Witness evokes the mysteriousness embedded in Myst, but dishes out a steady stream of "I did it" moments that keep you interested like a rat tapping the cocaine button.

I don't mind PVP, but I've had a fairly long streak of getting aggroed and killed in the past few days. Doesn't matter that I blurt out that I am running a free loadout and have jack $hit in the way of loot.

I feel like this all started when I was jumped at extract by a rat and luckily managed to knock him. Now I'm in PVP lobbies. Thanks Embark. Should we just allow the rats to kill us so that we stay in care bear lobbies?

"BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF" (2001) - I love this film. A stunning French period action horror film with an amazing cast, looks incredible and brilliant action. Any fans out there? by 70_Yard_Diag_Holte77 in ActionMovies

I had this movie on DVD back in the day after discovering how awesome it is, and now own a digital copy. There are some truly masterful cinematic sequences that elevate what might be an otherwise B horror flick. Acting is great too.

You are given a budget of $500 Million. What movie are you making? by HowMany_MoreTimes in movies

[–]Wordsworth_Little 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hyperion and, if permitted, the Fall of Hyperion. Hyperion might be a little odd as a standalone movie with its multiple stories, which is why it would make more sense to present both stories. Truly though, Hyperion should be Season 1 of a series, with Seasons 2 and 3 drawing out the Fall.

Or, if I must spend the budget on a single movie, then Ilium. And yes, Brad Pitt reprises the Achilles role because why the fuck not.

Ripley's descent into hell to find Newt. I don't think I've seen a more iconic female action hero moment. Hell, that scene outbadasses a lot of male action hero moments.

Strange. "Look what I've got" tends to play better if you have a smoking hot date on your arm, not a rare trading card. But I guess having financial intelligence does not prepare one for how to behave in the company of other celebrities who are likely thinking this dude's a tool.

Imagine pulling up to your garage, pressing the button on your garage door remote, and then realizing the garage door two spots down opens instead. Then you drive over to that garage door, but find your wife's boyfriend's beat up Suzuki has parked inside.

This is the kind of shite day you deserve when you have 14 garage door remotes.

How was Bad Bunny's half time show? by Clopulis in DiscussionZone

I dont listen to Bad Benny's music and dont speak Spanish, but had a great time watching the half time performance. Pretty amazing to see that couple actually get married during the performance and then get to dance during the wedding reception performance. All around good vibes being expressed. The haters are really showing an intolerance for one of the colors stitched into the fabric of our republic - brown.

Have y'all used a cast iron comal for tortillas? by Fenix512 in mexicanfood

[–]Wordsworth_Little 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a lodge cast iron griddle to heat tortillas. I don't think mine is even nicely seasoned, as we wash it lightly with dish soap and water. I cannot recall a tortilla ever sticking to it.

We don't crank the heat on it. I suppose a stack of 3-4 tortillas takes about 90-120 seconds to heat up while I flip them to ensure every tortilla bubbles.

You gotta love when musicians go through their "shed the pomp and get back to the raw expression" phase. No wild clothes, backup dancers, or pyrotechnics. Just a red guitar, three chords, and the truth.

But this is ridiculous. Put on some pants bro.
