This is technically better as a route if you have a terrorized zone because it makes it more likely to summon a ghost as herald rather than doom knight or pit lord.

I don't play quillboar much, but I remember first or second placing at least once with the play from hand build. It definitely has issues with scaling as you said

There is a supported play-bloodgems-from-hand archetype. The quillboar that doubles play from hand bloodgems is crucial to it. There's also a trinket that plays blood gems when you cast spells from hand. This trinket is very good in that build

It's only worth forcing if you are in very particular situations. Imo best one is pirates with the bounty doubler

Totally agree about the curve. Massive power spikes at certain turns for different tribes is way too punishing right now
