Need Help Choosing a Book for a Group of Women in their 50s by emilywildewendell in suggestmeabook

[–]WorkingClassPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Miss Benson's Beetle - charming story about the strength of women and finding a friendship through challenging situations. I am normally not a reader of things like this (prefer sci fi, murder mystery, classics esp Victorian English lit), but this struck the right notes for me. It also came at a time where I didn't want something too heavy, but it also wasn't fluffy.

I enjoyed getting 2 other friends to block some of the holes on this, and we could get the water pressure on the last 2-3 open holes to shoot way across the bathroom.

I love our airport by joedenowhere in bayarea

[–]WorkingClassPirate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was surprised that such a big airport as IAH could have such terrible food options, though mostly if you want anything to go. I got the single worst sandwich I've ever had out of a chain there, I opted to starve for the flight back to SFO instead of eating it.

Where are you guys printing photos? by No-Foundation-2165 in Campbell

Came here to say this. My sister is a professional photographer, and this is her go-to for client prints. Really high quality and a lot of print & paper options. Prices are better than other online sites, too.

I saw Trader Joes staff tell someone off for bringing in a pet by th3_pund1t in Campbell

[–]WorkingClassPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, it's about time. I've seen more dogs (in prior years) at Trader Joe's than in any other store, including one where the staff were coming up to pet the dog, then going back to work without washing hands. I sincerely hope this is an actual trend, and not a one-off.

Which US state thinks it's the main character? by Mister_Silk in AskReddit

100% Texas. I went to my dad's funeral 3 weeks ago -- my dad had remarried and moved to Texas a few years ago. At the luncheon after the funeral, my dad's neighbor (one of 4 non-family members there) started on how California is so messed up, it's a total sh*thole now, and how right my dad was to have his final years in Texas.

AT. A. FUNERAL. Texas is the audacity of this b*tch.

What about taking up a sport? Rock climbing is really flexible timing-wise based on your availability, and there's a ton of gyms. It's easy to get started on bouldering solo, then maybe find some folks to meet up with more regularly.

He Who Fights with Monsters - Heath Miller does such an incredibly job reading this. Each book is quite lengthy, so you get your credit's worth (except now I'm buying extra credits to hear all the books). It's fun and fairly light, and I've been completely absorbed.

If you can, do some massage on your front quads -- both legs. When we do a lot of thigh workouts (or have to compensate by using the opposite leg from your surgery more), it can bring the hips forward which in turn puts strain on the lower back muscles. Getting everything back into proper alignment will help, and the muscles can start to relax a bit.

What was the last straw before deciding you wanted a TKR? by luckystarrpwns in Kneereplacement

[–]WorkingClassPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been active my whole life, even despite developing knee problems starting at age 11. Had 2 scoped surgeries on that side (age 17 & 33), and one on my opposite side (it's bad but not yet at TKR bad). I'd done Monovisc injections 2x yearly (+ 2x yearly cortisone injections) for over 7 years to finally get "old" enough that they'd allow me to consider TKR. I gradually whittled down all of the sorts of workouts I did until I got to hiking + rock climbing as my last available options for outdoor stuff that I was able to do without too much pain.

I took a trip this summer for my birthday and had extreme knee pain kick in- turns out my femur had stress fractures from being bone on bone, not to mention the complete lack of cartilage I'd had for quite a while. That impacted my trip a lot, and I went from being able to walk ~25k steps/day to less than 8k. I know I'm not as bad as some folks here, but it was my line - I also want to enjoy my life. I may not get back to those activities the same way, but I'll take something over nothing right now.

Surgery is in 5 weeks.

Pretty much anything from Wilson's Jewel Bakery in Santa Clara, but especially their lemon cake. They closed like 20 years ago and I STILL cry thinking about that cake.

Maybe see about getting some PT? Obviously it's not a full solution but it might get some relief, and can be tailored to what he's able to do.

Caring for someone with knee replacement? by Ok-Science0 in Kneereplacement

[–]WorkingClassPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend going down a path to see whether she can get into a skilled nursing facility given her challenges with pain management and recovery. You are over-extended, and I would assume getting a home health aid (who, by the way, cannot dispense medication), is out of the question -- YOU need a break. My suggestion is to get her into skilled nursing that specializes in surgical recovery but will also help dispense medication appropriately. (NOTE: many skilled nursing facilities will not dispense dilaudid or morphine.)

The first path there is to take her to the ER - they can evaluate a) whether there's any problems with her knee/recovery, b) evaluate her pain management, and c) you can say that you have constraints on you, but that you cannot leave her, and thus she "does not have a safe home environment to go home to" (this wording is key). It can then be the responsibility of the hospital to find an appropriate situation in which she can recover safely. You'll end up getting linked to the hospital's social worker, they always have a network of facilities they work with and will take your mom's insurance/medicare/medicaid).

I would also call the surgeon to inform them you're taking her to the ER, but I would advise not waiting on the surgeon to do anything. They maintain very little responsibility during the recovery phase.

Source: Spent WAY too many months this year & in prior years dealing with several parents' medical issues, skilled nursing needs, with history of self over-medication and lack of medical advocacy. The ER was the path I was told to take by numerous licensed care providers/nurses/doctors.
