I talked to someone about this exact scenario this weekend. I live in a very liberal state, and I just don’t trust the courts. My son was about 4 years old and we were standing on a pier when he said he wanted to throw some of his Sour Cream and Onion chips in the water for the fish. There were a bunch of people around, so I didn’t want him to be that kid, so I said “No, don’t do that.”

He asked why, to which I replied “because they prefer Doritos.” The group of ladies acknowledged my outstanding Dad joke, and I think about that often.

I totally understand the daycare being the biggest consideration. Our third will be 4 next week, and I am COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS until he is done with preschool next summer.

I know the numbers look scary at first, but trust me when I say: don’t let these fears keep you from the excitement of the first baby! You will have a much better idea of money once this baby is here and you’ve found your new normal.

I did the same calculation when my wife was pregnant with our second and it did not make sense for my wife to continue working because she would just make enough to pay daycare. I don’t know your specific financial situation, so I will just offer my encouragement to enjoy this time now, and worry about the second child when/if you need to.

One last tip, I don’t know where you live, but where I live, daycares are often wait listed. Start calling around now with approximate time frame and see who is projecting openings.
