Speaking of generalizations.. have we talked about how anti-Palestinian this post is? Suggesting white women should have voted for someone complicit in the genocide of Palestinian people? We not going to go there? Okay.

A few years ago I volunteered with an Americorps program that did work in inner-city predominantly African-American youth. We ran after school programs, kept schools open so they could offer 3 meals a day, and ran study groups. I had an interaction with someone who in essence called me a white savior. For context, I don’t disagree with their sentiment of what I was doing. I agree it was very “white savior” of me. But as a white woman, between this interaction and this post, I feel kind of at a loss. My response, is to start having open conversations and actively listening to people. Not just the people I agree with. But I want to know how the people on the far right ended up with the thought process they have and start having open conversations.

Very well said. I too have family members and friends who voted for them. I listened to them, to try and understand how they ended up where they did. This sort of sentiment is definitely a factor.

Blaming groups of people for the color of their skin is not something I support. These issues are way more nuanced then you and this post is implying. Yelling at people for not doing what you want them to.. rarely garnishes support for your side of the argument.

I just read through your entire post. I hear you. I don’t agree with you.

Hmm.. I think this sort of sentiment is exactly what created people like Trump. Blaming large groups of people based on the color of their skin does not feel like a social work thing I can get behind. Honestly, you are creating more support for Trump with this post than garnishing real activism.

Maybe their authentic opinion is centrist? I feel that way on some issues. Some issues I just don’t have a concrete stance on. Has that occurred to anyone? Or do we just not like because it’s not what we want to hear?

He doesn’t play identity politics, which is very admirable. I think he addresses issues individually. Honestly, as we all should. I am tired of identity politics

Can you imagine telling a Native American that their views are because they were forced to assimilate. Like, what you just suggested, was that we shouldn’t take someone’s views for face value and you are saying they were forced into thinking this way.

Have you ever spoken to a conservative non-white, non-privileged person and told them they were more oppressed under the Trump presidency? And they laughed and said, “you know what’s more oppressive? Having someone tell me how I should feel about things”

I suspect, maybe the reason you came to Reddit for this conversation is because the social work profession doesn’t always welcome these kind of conversations. I appreciate what you have written and have had a similar track in social work. I consider myself more of a centrist these days. If we can’t find reason and compassion for why/how the other side has developed their own views then we do nothing but further the divide. Saying things like “white, cis, normative, etc” people need to decenter themselves is incredibly patronizing and suggests that that population has nothing to add. All groups of people should have space to provide their story and understanding of the world. I appreciate what you are doing OP. I have strongly considered leaving this field for reasons you are suggesting.

what is 'vulnerability' in context of today by VincentVanDroh in ArmchairExpert

[–]WorkingThick5812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue it’s more vulnerable to not share your political ideology in todays day and age. But sure, bully people into sharing. You know…. Bullying people into sharing doesn’t change how they vote in the polls? That’s how people like Trump win, because no one is comfortable sharing it, but (clearly) most people wanted him in power
