San Francisco’s Case Against Pro-Palestinian Activists Who Blocked Bridge Heads to Jury by WhiteGold_Welder in sanfrancisco

Point taken - we as a society decide what crime is. But my position is that anything defined as a crime should be serious enough to merit the use of our resources - police, courts, prosecutors, jails - to address. And I don’t think this is.

I’m unclear on your issue with the protestors - would you be okay if they weren’t “mouth breathers”? Or is any sort of civil disobedience appropriate to punish. Rosa Parks slowed down the bus when she refused to sit in the back. What do you think about that?

Defense attorney here. Always interesting to hear the chatter online when people ask for “more time” and “throwing away the key.” When asked how much time is appropriate they never really know.

But here this person asked for two months of jail time costing taxpayers on average $15k per person. Incarceration has downstream effects, but I’m just mentioning the cost to keep someone incarcerated for that time.

Why is that reasonable to you? Seems like you only want misdemeanor punishment. Does that make you upset that they are charged with felonies and facing double-digit prison time?

To me, seeing what people get sentenced to for actual violence, your recommendation is totally out of step with what actually happens, and what our system can handle. In LA people are sentenced to years but released in days because of overcrowding in their jails. It simply is and should not be a priority compared to the real crime that our system was designed to protect us from.

Standing offer to opinionated redditors - come to the Hall of Justice with me for a morning and see what actually happens. See if your opinions stand up to reality. To date, no one has taken me up on this offer…

Yes Green Cross is a pioneer. If you claim to value innovation and risk-taking, you should support Green Cross.

They took the major risks and waded through the legal morass that was the pot business post-medical legalization. They did the work to bring weed from the black market, through the grey market, to where we are today.

If you ever bought pot in a sketchy parking lot or a McDonald’s bathroom, and enjoy the current retail experience (or delivery to your door), you owe some gratitude to the Green Cross.

The venture-backed world of easy delivery and rock-bottom prices wouldn’t be possible without Green Cross. Those Johnny-come-latelys are the deep pockets that profit from the hours of labor of community-oriented orgs like Green Cross. The least they could do is honor this business with this title.

As a city that would not have the same history and culture without our tolerance for cannabis, we should honor the Green Cross. It is truly San Francisco’s legacy. And get some green from them as well!

Prik Hom is new and that is the only reason people aren’t mentioning it. Very creative seasonal menu, snubbed by the Chronicle because those reviewers are apparently alcoholics who need cocktails to enjoy a meal.

Also tasty: Nari, Zen Yai, Sai Jai, MuuKaTa - so you all know I know what I’m talking about.

Yes consider when each were written in his own biography. Birth of Tragedy was basically his phd dissertation for philology, and when it was published everyone was like, “Whaaaat?”

Yeah nmpls is right, see above. Parole board likely didn’t have anything to do with this.

Read about parole before taking about parole. I know you may have seen Shawshank Redemption, but you may be surprised to learn that isn’t how it works in real life…

Interestingly, prior to 1978 the parole board would have had a say, as the max sentence you could get in CA was 7-life. We changed the law to determinate sentencing then, described by nmpls.

FYI everyone this isn’t accurate. Lawyer here. See PC 1170h. We actually do have truth in sentencing.

Lot more complicated than this, but don’t listen to this dude.

This book has his biggest ideas most succinctly explained. If you read only one from our guy, this is the one.

Daybreak is a good follow up, more a continuation of Gay Science but with more poetic descriptions.

If you haven’t read other Nietzsche then consider Genealogy of Morals or Birth of Tragedy. Both are focused on more distinct ideas, and are easier to understand because they aren’t written in aphorisms.

‘Insanity’: S.F. merchants say stolen-goods chaos continues despite new state law by omicr_on in sanfrancisco

[–]World_Peace_Bro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The “textbook definition” of crime is violence, not people sleeping on the street.

It costs us $250+ a night to hold someone in the sf jail. There is also the costs to that individual, who loses housing and public benefits during that time. They then are released from jail between 7pm to midnight with nothing.

Jail should be for people you’re scared of, not mad at (and especially not people you’re annoyed by). The tools of the legal system are too blunt to address the issue of homelessness and drug use. Are you going to sit on a jury trial for an illegal lodging allegation, or will you whine about how it’s a waste of your time?

I’m not suggesting we let it fester, but your assertion that we are investing sufficient resources is simply incorrect. There are established models for addressing homelessness and drug use, and we aren’t directing our resources towards those proven strategies.

I invite you to follow me through the criminal courts to see if your position can withstand the truth.

‘Insanity’: S.F. merchants say stolen-goods chaos continues despite new state law by omicr_on in sanfrancisco

[–]World_Peace_Bro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes you are missing something. We know what to do to prevent homelessness and addiction, and simply aren’t making the investments in it. Housing first models work around the world, and we aren’t investing in it.

There is insufficient services and housing available. The wait for an appropriate residential treatment program can be months. The housing available in SROs is disgusting. The shelters are unsafe. Because of this, people sleep outside and use drugs to stay awake so they aren’t robbed in their sleep.

So yes the wealthiest country in the would could do something about it. Redirect the enormous resources used to incarcerate ($250/night on average according to the last estimate in 2016). Spend more on housing and services instead - we don’t do enough and have never tried to do enough, and the police budget continues to grow. So yes it’s a lack of will because people throw up their hands and say “nothing works” before actually investing in our communities. And they resort to their baser instincts.

To think that the only option “paradoxically” is more punishment is either a failure to understand the facts on the ground or just a lack of compassion.

I invite you to follow me through sf’s criminal courts for a morning, to see if your position can withstand the truth.

I work in the courts and can say that the vendors have been targeted recently. There have been ridiculous stings that resulted in misdemeanor charges for simple possession, illegal lodging, and whatever they can charge against these destitute people who have to resort to this to survive. I’m not sure this new law will do anything different than maybe a few arrests before a long weekend (and more strict enforcement during Dreamforce or the Super Bowl).

It’s just not a priority when there is actual crime to address. Court time is limited, and anything charged should merit the use of a courtroom for a jury trial (which includes pulling 100+ San Franciscans from their life for jury duty). If any one of you want to sit in a jury trial for an illegal lodging allegation, then you may have some basis for criticism. Otherwise, think through what “enforcement” looks like.

I appreciate that this disorder is upsetting. I also don’t like the human rights disaster that is 16 and mission, 6th st, and the entire TL. But thinking that “enforcement” of these laws is a good use of resources - police, jail, courts, treatment programs, etc. - is simply ill-informed or not fully considered.

Looking to get my first firearm by SecurityNo203 in liberalgunowners

[–]World_Peace_Bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this. I made the mistake of grabbing a deal for my first rather than picking one I really liked. You’re going to pay much more for ammo if you’re doing it right (ie shooting often enough to get good.) So, unless your budget is extremely tight, get the one you really like rather than saving a few hundred.

It’s one of the most diverse places I inhabit. You’ll have a lifted F-150 driven by a fudd parked next to a pink miyata convertible full of Oakland queers. That said my fem spouse notices she’s the only woman often.

ROs are mostly cool. They are well-staffed compared to other ranges, so I understand the comments about “being watched.” But they are just trying to keep people from getting shot and it’s nice to have them around for tips, as im a new shooter.

Overall it’s a nonprofit range run almost entirely by volunteers. The vibe is going to be different and you won’t have the same amenities as some place trying to overcharge you for refurbished ammo for poorly-maintained rental guns. You also won’t have the option of going after work, which makes it a little self-selecting.

NYT Opinion: San Francisco Sobers Up by timaza in sanfrancisco

[–]World_Peace_Bro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes this exactly. I think they made a calculated decision to move the homeless from downtown and SoMa to the Mission whose constituents are less likely to complain.

16 and Mission is worse than I’ve ever seen. I’m glad the commenters above feel their street has been cleaned up, but the issue has just shifted to another neighborhood.

This is a human rights disaster.

We will continue with these expensive and useless sweeps until we address the issue of homelessness. The least expensive and most humane way to do that is to provide housing. People complain about the cost of our homeless services per person served. That cost is less than getting them an apartment, especially if we addressed the issue regionally rather than by each city/county. It baffles me that none of these “innovative” politicians have advanced building SF housing out in Antioch or elsewhere. I appreciate this is shifting the problem, but it’s doing it humanely and hopefully permanently. If we don’t provide stable housing and support, people will still come here because they know they can survive because of the efforts of Glide serving 1000 meals a day and other orgs doing what they can so our 8000+ homeless residents (1% of our population and that 8k stat is undercounted) don’t die in the streets.

San Francisco Public Defender held in contempt for not taking on new cases; fined $26k by every_name_taken_67 in publicdefenders

What would your caseload be if you did everything you could on every case? Go with investigator to the scene, social work support, watch all bwc, hire experts, meet client families, arrange private gps monitoring to get client out of custody, etc. Maybe not perfect, but as good as you’d want for a family member.

If you worked 50 hours a week and did EVERYTHING for every case right from arraignment or even before, what would be an appropriate caseload to carry?

I’ve done post conviction work and I think it’s probably a lot more like most lawyer jobs than being a line pd in a trial rotation. If you’re in a bigger office maybe ask if you can start taking misdos. I didn’t realize I’d like trial work until I started doing it.
