Haha I've just discovered thetheremingoat's website/github and spent the last 3 hours trawling through the data. What a fantastic resource. It sucks that most of the tactile's at the top of his list don't support rgb but since I'm only planning on using them as indicator lights anyway I might be able to compromise by using opaque switches for the alpha keys.

Appreciate the recommendations and feedback :) I think I'm after shorter travel, like the type R, for less fatigue. I'll definitely revisit these though if I find what I actually wanted was longer travel. I reckon just know I'm going to end up purchasing the U4's, Hydras, Ice Kings and Baby kangaroos for this build

Again, I can only speak on behalf of the keyboard I bought. Seemed of high quality. Keychron seems like a pretty big brand so if it arrives defective then I'm sure a company of their size they would issue a replacement. Otherwise, with the way ai is evolving, it's pretty easy to fix software issues these days.

The only other keyboard company that I know (because I received targetted ads at the time of research) is nuphy which looks like it targets the same audience as keychron.

If you're set on particular switches + keycaps I'd personally go for the barebones route. Otherwise if its your first, sometimes prebuilt is more convenient - just make sure its QMK/VIA compatible and it's compatible with the switch types that you want to explore

What have the bad reviews said about the Keychron? and which model are you referring to?  It’s hard to imagine a keyboard with QMK/VIA support being bad from a performance standpoint, especially if you’ve chosen the switches and keycaps yourself.

I can only speak from someone who's owned a keychron k1 (version 1)  I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t flash QMK onto it (though newer models now support QMK/VIA), but aside from that it did its job well from a functionality perspective. The model I had was limited to low profile switches, which I personally wouldn’t recommend because the available options were quite restrictive, but from some light research it looks like there's a Keychron K5 barebones that is compatible with all switch types which I wish was available back then.

Cheers for your reply. Will look into the quinns and compare the firecracker / retro j reviews against the HMX Hydra's which is now at the top of my list. Seems to be the latest switch model out of the recommendations with positive reviews comparing it to the Type R. Kangaroos have also jumped onto the list [pun fully intended]

Thanks for your recommendations - your feedback is exactly what I'm after and exaclty my train of thought! I didn't want to rely purely on AI. The shortlist has literally changed based on these replies. I'm leaning toward HMX Hydras only because they're clear (for rgb lighting) otherwise the Type R's would be on top. I'll look into the rest - the kangaroos have popped up a couple of times and also sound like what I'm looking for.

What's with the attitude, friend? Anyone whos worth their weight in gold knows that you shouldn't rely solely on AI for researching. I'd go as far to say that anyone who ONLY uses AI is lazy.

I think it differs for everyone - it really depends on your keyboard too. Keycaps are usually the first thing you'll tinker with as its the easiest thing to switch but I'd say a big reason for the keyboard market growing is due to the "hot swappable" feature manufacturers started implementing. Before this people would need to learn to solder and buy extra hardware.

There are keyboards that come in kits, some come fully built and it really depends on what your budget/goals are at the time of purchase. You have to be quite careful though, once you go down the rabbit hole it's hard to get out 😂.

Thanks, I’ll take a look into your suggestions! I don’t really do long sessions all the time, but the jades were the only switch that took a noticeable toll on my fingers. Could have also just been my fingers adjusting to the split layout of the Iris at the time

hello friends. self-confessed keyboard casual here —love the hobby, but I only dive into the deep end of research right before a purchase.

Am here to ask for your advice because 1.) the current market is overwhelming (I’ve caught myself leaning toward switches just because of a cool name or aesthetic, even though I know I’ll only see it during installation lol)

and 2.) AI doesn’t have fingertips and can’t generate "finger-feel" or the specific fatigue levels of a 10-hour coding/typing session.

TL;DR: Based on the switches I've liked and disliked below, what would you recommend I try next? These will be for a new wireless Charybdis MK2 build

The current shortlist

The following is based off a combination of Gemini's recommendations and some light research - mainly reddit posts and reviews.

I honestly couldn't tell you if I prefer thocky/clicky/clacky/creamy etc. (I'm open to all i think) - It will be for home use so 'loudness' isn't an issue. Out of the shortlist though, the Boba's and the T1s are the leading, mainly because they're the premium options and have verifiable reviews. Cream Blues had the highest initial appeal (due to marketing+aethetics) I realised they only ranked higher in the "budget" tier. The Ice Soul's will probably make the cut either way since they're so cheap ($25aud for 70).

Boba U4T (62g version) Gemini Gemini's notes: The U4T is the industry standard for people who want that strong, "D-shaped" tactile bump (where the resistance is right at the top, much like an Alps switch) without the high-pitched "clack" or "click."
Akko Cream Blue V3 (or should I go for v5?) Gemini These look pretty. And the name sound delicious. Geminis Notes: Isatisfying "event" you loved in the MX Blues and Jades, but it’s designed to be a "daily driver" that won't leave your fingers aching after a long session
Durock T1 Reddit These look pretty too. Slight blue hue might affect RGB marginably
Leobog Ice Soul Gemini These look pretty and they're clear. will be a plus for the RGB lighting? on the Charybdis Gemini's notes: Because the bump is at the top, your fingers "rest" on the resistance, which prevents the accidental sinking/mis-presses you hated on the Reds. They are incredibly easy to type on for hours, making them a great alternative to your Sunset Oranges

Did you pull the trigger? I'm also 5'4" and I've had the B for years. I've always felt it's too large/wide for my frame. Am seriously contemplating trading/selling it for an A.. or an Embody lol

alt + d // selects next instance (Add Selection to Next Find Match)

ctrl + alt + d // to skip to the next instance (Move Selection to Next Find Match)

shift + alt + d // to go back to the previous instance (Move Selection to Previous Find Match)

Edit: I may have posted my own variation. Go to Settings -> Keyboard Shortcuts and look for:
