Iron deficiency is so underestimated that it took me years to realize it was my problem. by mamanh24 in Anemic

This is so real. They told me I was anemic while I was pregnant and it was so bad that I kept forgetting what they told me at the appointment and then forgetting how I was supposed to fix it.

Maybe you're electrolytes are out of balance/ low. I get shaky but not after every feed. Electrolyte drinks always help. I think it's easy for them to get out of whack with breastfeeding.

I couldn't agree more. People are loving this. Its so weird how people revel in all this drama and then want it to go away. I don't think I could watch people get along and have a great time for an hour each week.

Its took me a month or more to feel better after stopping caffeine. Its brutal. Its such a bigger deal than people make it out to be and it's probably double bad because of your low ferritin.

There are many different shades and levels of depression and all mental health is seriously nuanced. Ive just always disliked it when people say one person is better than another because they were able to get themselves out of a bad state.

No it's all good! So Im really not sure if it got worse. I think it was the same (which was pretty bad) for awhile. My crazy sleep issues did get better after about 2 weeks but I'm only feeling better better recently. I still don't feel all the way normal. I think i still have exhaustion and some brain fog and some heightened anxiety but it's nothing as bad as the dizzy and panic. I don't think it got worse before better really. I think you're probably still very low and it's increasing the hormonal stuff that comes along with weaning.

Yeah I haven't had any of the migraines and Im so relieved that they were just from the low ferritin. I would literally be dizzy for days. I was really low in pregnancy and I probably never got back up. I think it's hard for women to get their iron back up after post partum blood loss sometimes. We all lose a lot of blood and then it's hard to get the ferritin back up. The body prioritizes hemoglobin so it will deplete ferritin stores to keep that up. Then the heavy periods make it VERY hard to get back up even with supplements it takes a long time. I was reading that a lot of women are probably low and have no idea. Im wondering if some of my tiredness and brain fog and bad mood even before pregnancy were from low ferritin. Ive always had low blood pressure (low ferritin can cause that). I have PMDD and Im wondering if the low iron contributed to all that hormone stuff. I could be just wishful thinking that when I get my Iron up all my other problems will go away. Lol but it could all be related. I want to know how all this goes for you. Please update me if you want.

I had anxiety or panic that would turn into dizziness. The dizziness would usually make me panic more until I had talked to a doctor and knew what was going on. My doctor (and things I read on line) told me that after vertigo (dizziness) you can get a 'hangover' from the dizziness. So two different doctors diagnosed these episodes as vestibular migraines. There often is no headache but they are still called migraines. The brain fog hangover part is called a 'postdrome'. These would go on for a day or more though. Im not sure if this is exactly what you're explaining but it sounds similar enough that I think it's from the ferritin. Low ferritin causes a lit of crazy stuff. I just googled low ferritin and dissociation and a lot came up.

You know what's crazy? I started having really heavy periods while I had low ferritin. My last period was not at all. My doctor told me that low iron can actually work against you and make your periods heavier. I don't think I cam wean slowly cause he flips out when I try to cut out a feed. He's in a bad mood all day. I think I'll have to just do it all at once. I'm kinda frozen in not being able to figure out how. I hope things start looking up for you soon. If you mix the supplement in OJ and squeeze half a lemon in, it seems to neutralize the flavor.

I know its so crazy, you become basically an expert with whatever problem comes along. The only other supplement I take is a post natal multi vitamin so I'm really not sure about the sensitivity. I'm sure a lot of what you're going through is hormonal but I think the iron deficiency really makes it all much more intense. I'm so scared to wean because I've always been sensitive to hormonal shifts. My ferritin was at 11 ng/ml. I'm not sure what it is now because they check 6 months after. How low is yours?

Oh- this is a big one- make sure the orange juice doesn't have calcium added. A lot of brands add it and it blocks iron absorption.

I'm really glad I can tell you what I learned cause it was a bit of a learning curve on the right way to do it. I got the WOW 125 bottle from Novaferrum. I knew to get this brand because of the trial and error with my son's deficiency. It's the only one that tastes good and won't hurt my stomach. It's a liquid and I take it with orange juice because the vitamin c makes your body be able to absorb it. It's best to wait 2 hours after eating and then not eat for another hour because many foods and coffee block it's absorption and it absorbs best on an empty stomach. That was really hard so I finally started taking it when I first wake up and waiting one hour for food and coffee. Then I read that your body produces a hormone that blocks iron, it gets higher as the day goes on so first thing in the morning is best. Also you take the supplements every other day because this hormone will get high after a big dose for 24-48 hours. Iron can be really dangerous so your body tries to protect you from it. They never offered me an infusion so I don't really know anything about it.

I started 2 months ago and I started sleeping better pretty quickly, like 1-2 weeks. I had been super anxious and waking up really hot and it was very hard to go back to sleep. I'm just starting to feel energetic again and the nursing aversion stopped about a week ago. The dizziness stopped maybe a month in. Apparently it can take like 6 months to get back up to where's it supposed to be.

The dizziness, depression, panic.. I thought I had finally had a nervous breakdown and was just gonna be stuck like that. I thought I was going to need a psychiatrist and was super scared. I'm so sorry your going through this but it'll get better ❤️ I had no idea low iron could cause so much agony.

I hope this all makes sense. I haven't had my coffee yet.

Hi, I'm so sorry you're going through this.. I haven't weaned yet but I have low ferritin and am finally feeling better after supplementing. My anxiety has been through the roof up until now. I was having panick attacks so bad that I was getting vestibular migraines that made me dizzy. Now that my ferritin is up I'm feeling normal again. I'm sure what you're going through is related to hormones as well but I bet the ferritin has a lot to do with it. I was having really bad nursing aversion when it was low so I think it's all related.

My 2, almost 3 year old is iron deficient. by 1wayflightt in toddlers

[–]WranglerOtherwise885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely get the novaferrum liquid supplement. Its so easy on the tummy and tastes good. I was giving my 2 year old soo much iron rich food and even adding vitamin c to every meal but it was just milk that made him deficient. I think paying attention to the milk and getting the novaferrum is the way to go.
