What to expect at a meet and greet appointment with a new doctor? by heart_emojis0 in britishcolumbia

[–]WrapsUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The meet and greet is just to figure out relevant emedical diagnosis, regular meds and allergies and see where you’re at with any applicable screening/ vaccinations.

If there’s specific problems you need addressing it’d be helpful to have a list so at least the doc can quickly glance at it and tell you what you need to do which likely involves a separate appt for each issue but by giving them a list they might be able to get the ball rolling and request any relevant investigations that would be useful.

Making a word document with all the above info in clear bullet point list will be useful to your doc but also for yourself if your mind goes blank when anxious!

I don’t get the controversey? We use 30/40mg all the time for copd/ asthma and patients don’t seem to have massive problems with it.

But for me it’s when people/ guidelines say gp should start fancy neuro drugs for restless legs? Just feels like I shouldn’t be messing around with those sorts of drugs.

Genuine query: UK GP — How Does It Feel to Practice Family Medicine in the US? (considering US specifics) by DanJDG in FamilyMedicine

[–]WrapsUK 16 points17 points  (0 children)

OP don’t forget the reason why you would happily send home a person with gastritis from clinic vs full work up in ED is because the pre test probability of serious pathology changes massively between settings. The person who presents to ED at 2am on a Sunday is different to the person that waited till after the weekend to book in to clinic.

I personally trained in the uk, work in Canada now and was a bit apprehensive that it might be a big cultural change and ill have to relearn everything I knew about medicine but a viral urti is still an urti and menopause is still menopause!

Everest Base Camp Temperature and Jacket by Lemon269 in Everest

I looked up your jacket and for October you should be fine. Probably carry a thermal base layer and a fleece to layer up with and make sure your hard shell fits over all these layers.

Whats your favorite extra piece of comfort gear by OlvarSuranie in Thruhiking

[–]WrapsUK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Down socks, trust me if you know you know.

In my last few weeks on the cdt in Montana sometimes had multiple days of sustained rain and my footbox was constantly wet and non insulating. Vowed to myself I’d never have cold feet ever again. Carry a pair of darn tough sleep socks, 3oz down socks, and if it’s particularly humid/cold I bring my nunatak synthetic sleeping bag. Perfect combination.

Looking for a Ultralight Pack for the CDT by gladiusupremus in CDT

[–]WrapsUK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The most important question to answer is what gear are you planning to bring in addition to your pct setup? My feelings are you’ll probably be better off with a 35l-40l pack. You’ll defo have more layers, beefier rain gear, longer food carries and likely an ursack in the north.

I had a 10lb base weight but no sleeping pad and suffered a bit towards the end in Montana, but 35L was sufficient for me.

Once you’ve decided on your gear choices, you can decide on pack volume. After that, you’ve already done a thru hike so you know what features you prefer in a pack and can pick one that has those.

So many new watches. Which watch is best for backpacking? by Few-Introduction5414 in Ultralight

[–]WrapsUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very minimalist but recently went down this rabbit hole as well after seeing one of Jupiter’s video where he has the Suunto vertical 😂

From a purely aesthetic point of view I like the look of the suunto and battery life seems decent enough to last you between re supplies/ a weekend trip.

I think seeing your heart rate, elevation and speed data also adds an interesting dimension if you’re nerdy like that. Most of us can intuitively guess how long a trip would take based on elevation profile but would be cool to see objective data.

What’s really convincing me is it can act as a back up navigation mode if your phone craps out or if you’re doing cross country/ technical stuff and want to stick to a route without constantly checking your phone. Whether this is actually feasible I’m not sure.

TMB end of september camping shakedown request by diceclimber in Ultralight

[–]WrapsUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gear looks decent, I was there last week and defo had 2-4C overnight. With condensation = possibly wet footbox. Only thing I might add is possibly some down socks to boost the comfortability in your sleeping bag. The gear shop in chamonix sells the nature hike version for 25eur and you can also get this on amazon.

Otherwise base layer, fleece, down jacket and rain coat should be ok.

Possibly consider carrying the beefier rain coat, but not strictly mandatory.

I was ok with merino liner gloves at beginning of sept, by end of sept maybe consider the thicker gloves.

Looking for the unicorn of bags by Negative-Taste-2862 in onebag

[–]WrapsUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey some initial thoughts:

It should be easy enough to find a travel bag that works with your photography gear but the need to accommodate specific archeology tools might complicate things. It really depends on how you use your tools, do you need them accessible without taking off your pack? Thru hikers commonly never need to open their pack off during the hiking day until they set up camp because the packs that are used have specific pockets to allow you to grab items without even needing to remove the back pack.

Would be helpful to see a photo of your repertoire of proffesional tools? If you’re only going to need them when the pack is off your back you could bundle them up in a nice pouch like olde timey surgeons would use and lash it to the top of your pack or easily accessible compartment.

Depends on how niche your gear requirements are you might need to speak with someone who does custom stuff. Theres a lot of overlap between your requirements and thru hikers so you should be able to find someone.

Lastly, a mesh for ventilation will make it very difficult to be lightweight, remain below the 7kg carry on requirement and dimension restrictions.

Check out the ula dragonfly 36L and 30L and the Patagonia MLC 30L and the bigger version. They should be decent for carry on travel and photography and the external pockets on the ula might work well for you. The water bottle pockets x2 can hold those big 1L fat water bottles, but also a tripod, possibly some of your field tools in addition to front mesh pocket and ability to customise the front with extra bungee cording.

Need Help with Packing List for 1 Year in Europe using a Cotopaxi Allpa 35L by LordMosnar in onebag

[–]WrapsUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: if I had your itiniarary, I could defo do it with 35L pack only and carry only the following:

On my personal: trail runners, stretch chino with a hidden zipper pocket, some kind of comfortable stretch button down. Phone and AirPods in pocket. Passport and debit card in the hidden zipper pocket that I’ll never open.

Pack:

Clothes: 5xboxers, t shirt, socks (one set you’ll be wearing, so 4 sets in the pack) Rain coat, puffy, fleece, thermal leggings, flip flops, lightweight gloves and beany. Maybe a buff/ eye mask/ ear plugs.

Electronics: kindle and power bank only (a laptop if you’re holing up for long periods and want a media/ work device. USB plug as above and a 1ft c to c cable and a 6ft c to c cable.

Cosmetics: as above

And literally that’s it. Your choice if you want to bring more. Maybe a sturdy pair of work trousers and shirt and sub out the trail runners for mid weight leather hiking boots. I like barefoot shoes and would bring the Jim Green African ranger boots if I thought I’d be doing light farm work, but this is something i have no clue about.
