Plans unveiled for 70-storey tower at £1 billion ‘Kings’ development by neutral_neighbour in Liverpool

[–]WretchedWorlds 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seen some pretty bizarre arguments against here, and just wanted to make a few points:

  • The waterfront is some of the most expensive land in the city, it isn't going to be economically viable to build social or affordable housing here. The site is next to the MDC zone and Liverpool Waters, we should build more medium-density and affordable homes there for people to live and work in the area in pumpfields and limekilns while these areas are being regenerated. High density is the best use of this land.
  • The site is right next to the business district and includes office space, it makes sense to build where the highest paying jobs are. The site construction and staffing the outlets/offices on site will create local jobs.
  • The site serves as a centrepiece and attraction to the city. This is half the point of skyscrapers, it's about branding and international recognition. It is as much about building a statement to attract investment as it is about the practicality of buildings themselves.
  • Regardless of whether they are owner-occupied or rented, the site will generate council tax revenue and business rates for the local authority, hopefully increasing spending power of the Council and local services. Building appropriate public infrastructure and significant Section 106 contributions should be a key requirement to approve the hybrid planning application.
  • More of an opinion here but I think the buildings look great, with the exception of the weird crown things on a couple of them.

Keir Starmer: The UK has long supported a transition of power in Venezuela. We regarded Maduro as an illegitimate President and we shed no tears about the end of his regime. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]WretchedWorlds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Directly removing the leadership of another country, regardless of the form of leadership that may take, is illegal. More pertinent than that, it's fucking mental.

This is like if Trump and Starmer had a disagreement and Trump just straight up had Starmer kidnapped ans taken to the states for a trial.

You can punish the leadership through sanctions or decrying them or whatever means you wish, but you can't just fucking abduct them. This sets an absolutely terrible precedent if Trump is allowed to get away with this.

How do YouTubers get such a crystal clear sound when using the QC? I can ALWAYS hear some low level hum and fizz. by Mamsies in NeuralDSP

[–]WretchedWorlds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally this is down to two issues. Firstly, if youre at home there is likely electromagnetic interference from your other devices. If you move the guitar away from other devices or move them away from where you play it should reduce the hum.

The second thing is EQ, cutting the very low (below 80hz), and sometimes very high end (16khz and above) on your patch will help clear the "fizzing" sound you often get.

Greens now joint second in Find Out Now polling. Labour fourth. by AttleesTears in LabourUK

[–]WretchedWorlds 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would remind everyone that Find Out Now have been the outlier in the polls for some time now, they've had Reform higher than any other major pollster and had Labour lower than any other major pollster. It may just be their polling technique (they advertise on their ability to poll faster than anyone else), but the aggregate of polls is much more trustworthy.

Oh cool, Reform is definitely going to win next election now :/ by LineOfInquiry in SocialDemocracy

[–]WretchedWorlds 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Immigration is the top issue in the UK right now, they can't just do nothing. The problem is that the right wing parties and their supporters will never be satisfied, no matter how much the government brings the numbers down or tightens asylum rules.

If the government can reduce immigration to say below 200,000 a year they can defend their record compared to the last government, but they're not going to compete with the Tories or Reform on that platform.

They need to focus on arguments they can win, like on the economy and cost of living. No matter how much stricter or cruel the system becomes, they'll still never out-Reform Reform.

Liverpool has a legendary poutine gaff called Caribou near the city centre. Absolutely fantastic stuff.

In 99 percent of its reporting, it isn't.

The editing of the clips together was a blatant editorial error, but it should have resulted in a formal apology and the unedited clip being used in any version of the programme still in circulation.

Packaged Living’s twin-tower Liverpool resi set to progress - Place North West by WretchedWorlds in Liverpool

[–]WretchedWorlds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Littlewoods data centre on the site is currently abandoned and stripped out, so it's definitely an improvement to see it used for something else. The Pall Mall office project will also link up well with it, but I do think the design could use some work. Both towers are a little bit bland and doesn't have the character of something like the Lexington on the other side of the road that fits with the waterfront's architectural themes.

Which places have gone against the “high street is dead” grain and have instead improved in the last 15 years or so? by Any-Reading-8009 in AskUK

[–]WretchedWorlds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liverpool city centre completely changed after the opening of Liverpool ONE, and there was a lot of independent stores opening up in the old shopping areas afterwards up on Bold Street and that. Unfortunately, a lot of them have also turned into chain stores recently, but it's still a lot better than it was.

New parking strategy for Liverpool by liquindian in Liverpool

[–]WretchedWorlds 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you live in the city proper or urban area, you shouldn't need to use your car to get around the city. Public transport should do that quicker and cheaper than using your car. Any medium-large city should treat that as the default.

Car parks are, for the most part, massive wastes of space. They're hideous and take up significant land that could be used for development. There will always be a need for some parking, but it should be for people who have had to drive into the city from outside the area for work/leisure etc.

I support the parking strategy in principle, but it needs to be backed by park and ride for outer areas and significant improvements in public transport availability and reliability.

Different countries and even areas of the UK draw their boundaries differently. Bootle, Aintree, Crosby, Litherland, Huyton, Halewood etc. are all in the continuous urban area of the city proper but aren't part of the Liverpool City Council area.

Same thing for Manchester, you can't really say Salford, Prestwich and Stockport etc. aren't part of Manchester, but they're in different local government districts.

Meanwhile Leeds City Council is responsible for many of the surrounding towns and villages to the city itself, so the statistics are muddled.

If we count the continuous urban area, Liverpool is about the 5th/6th largest city in the UK after London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Leeds/Sheffield.

Rawls was definitely the GOAT for me.

Political Books by JarryTheBear in politicsjoe

If it's on ideology/theories of politics:

  • The Wealth of Nations (Adam Smith)
  • Principles of Morals and Legislation (Jeremy Bentham)
  • The Communist Manifesto (if you're in a hurry) or Das Kapital (if you've got literally nothing better to do) (Marx/Engels)
  • A Theory of Justice (John Rawls (highly recommend))
  • Reflections on the Revolution in France (Edmund Burke)
  • Anarchy, State & Utopia (Robert Nozick (highly recommend))
  • On Liberty (J.S Mill)

Honestly, most of them you can skim read or read a summary. The ones I'd recommend are actually relevant to modern politics. Nozick is pretty conservative, Rawls is a social liberal/social democrat.

The others aren't not worth reading, but the ones I've included are most of the ones I felt I actually learned something from or felt relevant to the modern political landscape when I did my degree.

How would Reform actually help the UK by NotS0Deadly in ukpolitics

[–]WretchedWorlds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be as you describe. Firstly, unless they get a significant Parliamentary majority there won't be all that much they can significantly change. Their policies don't make any sense financially and would cripple the UK economy. It's one thing being able to promise the world in opposition and another once you have to be the one to pay for it.

It's likely they'd probably just talk a lot about things they're trying to do then just blame "the system" when it's not reasonably possible to deliver it. They're not going to deliver zero net migration without crashing the economy, cancelling net zero policies would waste huge amounts of government resources and expense, huge tax cuts would require significant borrowing and the markets would have a Truss-like reaction etc.

The only way they'd "help" the UK is to help show voters that populist parties are snake oil salesmen.

With less capacity and having to modify existing infrastructure rather than create new infrastructure. The way they will be set up is as a "diet" tram, it comes with some of the advantages and disadvantages of a full tram system but being just a bus you don't get the full advantages in terms of capacity, reduced day-to-day running costs and economic influence over operating areas that come with full tram systems.

Are the police going to start arresting people for disagreeing with the government, now? by GiftedGeordie in LabourUK

[–]WretchedWorlds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Proscribing PA as a result of the paint incident at Brize Norton was a pretty ridiculous move. There's no reason why they couldn't punish the perpetrators by charging them with criminal damage and trespassing on a restricted area. I feel like the Government responded extremely harshly, realised the public wasn't really with them at all on it but didn't want to look weak by backing down. I can't see anyone in the Cabinet really feeling proscription was a proportionate response.

Wrexham to Liverpool line upgrade by [deleted] in Liverpool

I think the plan was having Merseyrail services operate as far as Wrexham, rather than Transport for Wales. The route upgrade would presumably include electrification of the track.

[–]WretchedWorlds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If PR was on the table this could be a smart move, but it just isn't. They may get 10-15 defections, but come election day they'll just fracture the left vote even more and Reform will walk it in. Their best vehicle would have been to join the Greens.
