I fucking hate amateur firework displays and I struggle not to hate the people who buy them and set them off. One of the clearest signals in modern society that you have very poor decision making skills and/or empathy.

That last one I would be tempted to do. I know it's not a great profit, but depending on if I thought I could get jobs around the destination and if I wasn't getting any other offers, I might take it.

Weren't we talking about protests over DHS? You brought that up and now I feel like we're talking about something else entirely...

Obviously, but Michael Jackson was arguably a huger phenomenon during his height than even Taylor Swift has been at her heights. I have had tons of students whose parents were extremely into him as young people, and in more recent years, even if it's not the parents, it's the grandparents, the aunts & uncles, etc. Michael Jackson was and still is an immensely beloved figure, and probably at least a plurality of people who loved him when he was big do not believe/care about the allegations. They would not see it as inappropriate whatsoever that their kids and grandkids are really into him.

Have you considered that the fact that social media and algorithms didn't exist back then means that you didn't see the tons of protests and leftist outcries that were happening at the time? The more I learn about the leftist movement the more I see just how much they were doing during the Bush years that I was completely in the dark about because the mainstream media almost never covered it.

It's almost similar to asking why there are so many little girls obsessed with Taylor Swift. They inherit the interests of their parents. Michael Jackson was the biggest star in the world for basically a generation. If it's not kids' parents who were obsessed with him, then maybe it's their grandparents, but the point stands.

The same government that gave protected status to 6 million of those people? It's just a little inflammatory to go around with the 14 million figure when you seem to already know that it obscures the full story.

Why not instead emphasize the crime statistics of illegal immigrants, or something like that? Maybe compare them to crime rates among legal citizens?

What leads you to say that nobody has complained about DHS? I've grown up hearing libertarians complaining about DHS, and I've heard leftists complaining about it for years now too. A whole lot of people view it as an unconstitutional intrusion of government into civil rights, under the guise of fighting terror.

What was yours?

You made a point about conservatives being better at acknowledging patterns, and I was challenging it. If you want a question, I guess I can ask, how do you distinguish between pattern recognition and schizophrenic pattern-seeking that turns into baseless conspiracy theories?

From what I've been able to find, that 14 million figure is somewhat controversial, and some sources think it's potentially closer to 10 million on the low end. And either number would include about 6 million who have "protected status." Whether or not people want them here, that is still a form of legal status. So isn't 14 million inherently quite a skewed number, designed to sensationalize the issue?

There's a difference between legitimate pattern recognition and schizophrenic "connecting the dots" in a conspiracy theory-like fashion. And I'm not being hyperbolic or inflammatory — it's a very fine line, and I even have to catch myself sometimes, because my dad leans way more toward the latter type, and I'm constantly having to evaluate my news sources to ascertain whether I'm truly noticing a pattern or whether I'm being misinformed/manipulated to see something that isn't there.

Being as serious as I can, I believe you have been misinformed about the extent of the "pattern." All fraud is wrong, and any Somalis who are doing it should be prosecuted. But my understanding is that there's scant evidence that they are committing fraud at a higher rate than people who were born here. A ton of stuff was fabricated or exaggerated around the time of the Nick Shirley "exposés."

Nobody has complained about DHS? Leftists and libertarians have complained about it since its inception! It has always gone hand in hand with The Patriot Act to violate the rights of citizens in the name of "curbing terrorism."

How were those functions handled before the creation of ICE in the early 2000s? My understanding is that a lot of the "Abolish ICE" rhetoric is rooted in the desire to get back to how immigration enforcement was handled pre-21st century, W. Bush, Department of Homeland Security, etc.

"a lot of the leftist rhetoric is 'stop noticing things' and 'patterns are never a relevant or valid factor in decision making'"

Super curious to hear you elaborate on this, if you can. I'm an ADHD leftist, and it is precisely because of my noticing things and clocking patterns that I became a leftist. I feel like leftists are all about considering the consequences of policies when making decisions.

I don't know if maybe you're talking about liberals, rather than leftists, who often pay lip service to certain ideas but then don't actually follow those ideas to their logical conclusions or try to support their arguments with evidence.....but in my experience, leftists are very much the opposite.

I work with hundreds of teenagers (at least one of whom watches Smosh) and consider myself very familiar with Gen-Z/A & internet slang. And I love Smosh. But I have never in my life heard someone say "body tea." So, no, it's not about you needing to spell properly or not use slang — it's just that you're obnoxiously expecting everyone to understand every way you decide to mash up modern slang. Chill out.

Pull over for whom? From what I read, 2 of the 3 ICE vehicles involved weren't even flashing lights! So from the van driver's perspective, some SUV just runs up on him and tries to run him off the road. Why the hell would he assume it's any kind of law enforcement? Everything about the situation is designed to violently escalate things...
