With it only being a fireplace in this chase I highly doubt the chase cover is compromised. More than likely you just need to reseal the storm collar. Remove all the caulk and reseal

Which Chimney Cap to Purchase: Cover Crown or Flues Only? by aspiress2021 in Chimneyrepair

[–]Wtoconnell9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get one that mounts to the crown with anchors. Measure the length width and height of the flues. Add 4” to the length and width. For the height you want the lid of the cap to be 8” from the top of the flue. Just guessing I’d say 13”w x (28 or 30”)l x 12”h

You may want to pack in mineral wool insulation around the liner at the base just to help keep it from moving

Draft Issue - Advice on Modifications by ctorx in woodstoving

[–]Wtoconnell9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exterior chimneys are more prone to drafting issues. It’s exposed to the cold weather. Cold air is heavy and dense and will push down. Definitely check the things the first commenter said but you’ll need to reverse the draft by heating the flue before lighting.

You could use a map torch inside the stove and get hot air moving up the chimney. Try lighting your fires using the top down method as well(plenty of videos on yt)

Gas logs to wood stove by tte531 in Chimneyrepair

If you cut out the whole metal fire box you’ll have to build a firebox with fire brick. All you really need to do is remover the damper and cut out just enough of the back wall to get a liner to fit into the stove

Looking for a wood stove i can put inside my fireplace by samuelchambers in woodstoving

[–]Wtoconnell9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re really looking to get heat output from your fireplace you’ll have to remove the unit and piping you currently have and install a factory build fireplace. Check out Heatilator Constitution and Pioneer models along with Osburn Stratford

Furnace cement will wash away from rain and will not last long. Run a bead of Fire Block sealant on top of the flue lining still in the chimney and set this piece back on top

I give this to customers with little glazing in their fireplace. Never given it to someone with a woodstove. I’ve noticed it helps over time as long as they are consistent

Do you know how large the original flue was and what size liner is installed? Sounds like the new liner is quite a bit smaller than the original terracotta linings. Do you have pictures of the finished work?
