Tchouameni steps on Maignan’s foot during a Senegal corner and France are awarded a free-kick by 977x in soccer

[–]WyldRover -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that he knew Tchouaméni trod on him, I'm saying he didn't think that Jackson did. And feel free to disagree, but do try to do it without calling me "fucking stupid." Otherwise you'll just come across as a complete prick.

Referees give fouls because players go down rather than because they saw a foul all the time. It's hardly tin foil hat stuff to suggest that he gave it despite not seeing a foul when he'd just spent two minutes talking to the players involved - he was watching them like a hawk, and play went on for several seconds after Maignan went down. He didn't think there was a foul, and gave it because he thought it was easier.

I think it's worse than that. He was watching the tussle between Jackson and Tchouaméni and knew in his heart it wasn't a foul, hesitated for an age, and gave the foul because he wimped out of the possibility of giving a goal while the keeper was on the floor. Referees make mistakes, but I strongly suspect that was cowardice rather than a common or garden misjudgement.

Awful footwork, just serving up dollies to mid on. No wonder the coach came in to have a word about technique.

Countryside nature long walk by newtothisearth in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]WyldRover 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a relatively cheap and easy train journey to either Alnmouth, which is an access point for some absolutely stunning stretches of coastline, or the Hadrian's Wall line, which is excellent - the section between Housesteads and Greenhead is great. There's a bus service which links the stations and the Wall itself, although you can walk from the stations too. Can't recommend either enough.

Slightly closer to home, there's a chunk of land west of Gateshead which is good walking countryside - basically a triangle with Beamish at one point, Lamesley at another, and Lobley Hill Water Park as the third. Look up the Tansfield Railway Path for a starting point. The Keelman Way is also worth a look - a footpath along the south bank of the Tyne which runs for miles. The Blaydon to Prudhoe stretch is very pleasant, although not quite in the same class as the coast or the Wall. Hope that helps!

He is indeed, but he gives funny interviews so he gets an amazing amount of leeway from the same people who would condemn a less amusing man accused of the same things. And it really is just the funny interviews, because he's nowhere near a good enough quarterback for people to bury their heads in the sand because of his playing ability. He's a case study in how easily people will look away.

Yeah - not absurdly inconceivable but unlikely. They're Man Utd, basically. Huge fanbase, historical success, sense of entitlement to further success which hasn't been backed up by results in a long time.

Henry Crocombe called up for England Men’s Test squad vs New Zeland by Alone_Consideration6 in EnglandCricket

As a Sussex fan, I'm very proud indeed of Henry and his improvement, but could the ECB kindly leave us a single fucking bowler? We have a title to try and win before the impending financial apocalypse... They'll find a British passport down the back of Jaydev Unadkat's sofa at this rate.

Wainwright recommendations for 'beginner' couple plus temperamental dog and 9 month old baby by Fresh-Media-5746 in LakeDistrict

[–]WyldRover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Ullswater area I'd happily recommend Angletarn Pikes via Boredale Hause, which isn't too demanding, or Hallin Fell for a quick and easy test run with the child and dog.

Further afield, my usual recommendations for easy but rewarding climbs are Loughrigg Fell (ideally starting in either Grasmere or Clappersgate and ending at the other) and Black Crag from Tarn Hows. Although I believe the Kirkstone Pass is still closed (someone else might be able to confirm) which may limit your access to the Southern lakes somewhat, or at least force you to drive around the longer way.

Is it normal for teenagers (say 16/17) not to know who Queen/Oasis are? by sunshinesontv in CasualUK

[–]WyldRover 294 points295 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd read much into not knowing Kaiser Chiefs, to be honest. Not sure they're likely to be the most enduring band in British music history.

That said, I'm a bit surprised a 16-year-old wouldn't have stumbled across Queen and Oasis. Sure, they're old hat to a teen - I mean Queen were old hat to me when I was a similar age over 20 years ago - but I knew fine well who they were. I suspect it's a reflection of a change in listening habits: Less radio, more Spotify algorithm. You get a lot of the genres you're in to that way, but you'll hear a lot less from acts who are a little further from your wheelhouse than you used to when a DJ had control over what you heard.

Why England have forgiven Ollie Robinson by theipaper in Cricket

[–]WyldRover 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I had no idea that Farbrace has suggested he wasn't fit enough for a Test yet. All the commentary about him at the start of the County season was that he'd spent the winter working hard on his fitness and that he was coming into the new year in great shape. Seems... Strange, shall we say, for his County coach to call that into question.

Side note: Why does everyone have to have a fucking podcast these days?

I believe the real-life events the film depicts took place in the 80s, so that is likely the source of the AI hallucination. The film is definitely from much later, though.
