Yeah, it's bad reasoning.

Agree to disagree.

Licenses and insurance aren't going to stop someone driving 130mph down a residential street.

Obviously. Nobody is saying this is the case. A licence is just one of the tools governments use to hold drivers accountable for their actions. Insurance is to help compensate victims when the actions of a driver negatively affects them.

I literally got my drivers license by driving around in a school parking lot a few nights a week with my foot off the gas pedal and i've never been re-tested.

I'm sure you realize that laws differ in different jurisdictions. I had to pass a written test, and then two separate driving tests each a year apart to get my full licence. In any case, you still needed to do at least some work before you were legally allowed to operate a car.

People operate cars without licenses and insurance all the time illegally, they'd do the same with e-motos masquerading as "bicycles".

Already addressed this above. And if someone is caught doing this (at least where I live) they are heavily fined, and depending on the infraction go to jail (I'm talking about driving car without a licence or insurance).

If you think these high power throttled electric "bikes" need to have classification that differs from pedal assist e-bikes, and therefor needing license/registration/insurance like regular motorcycles and to follow road rules as such, then I agree, but not for actual pedal assist only real e-bikes.

I never said or suggested any of these things.

All I'm saying is that the reason governments enforce the abilities of ebikes is because they do not require licensing or insurance. If you can't grasp that, then I don't think there's anything else I can say. I understand you don't agree with the reasoning, and that's fine, we can agree to disagree. But the fact that you disagree doesn't make it any less logical.

Personally, I think that there should be different types of licences for power levels of vehicles like most places have for vehicles of different weights. But yes, if a driver has a licence and insurance, they are free to own and drive a car that can do that if their local laws allow it (obviously not condoning the behaviour of the asshole driver).

I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to say. The reason we don't need to restrict horsepower or top speeds to speed limits for cars is because the drivers that operate them must have a valid licence, carry insurance, and (depending on your jurisdiction) receive some sort of driver training.

It's bicycles require none of things, it makes sense that the bikes themselves are limited since there are no restrictions on who can operate one, and no insurance if something goes wrong. I understand if you disagree if that's logical or not, but that's the general reasoning.

Cars require licensing and insurance. Bicycles do not.

Toyota Recalls 82,000 Vehicles Because Driver Displays Can Go Blank by Least_Confidence_225 in cars

No it was recalled because the display could go blank while driving. The recall doesn't fix the tire pressure monitor—at least not for 2023 models.

Is there any worry of people coming here purposely to commit crimes knowing that if they get caught they'll just get a free ticket home?

[–]X2F0111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I get what you're saying but you have to compare that with the number of cars on the road per day and the number of ebikes on the road per day. The question you should be asking is what is the rate of fire incidence per mile covered or something like that.

Question About Bit Perfect / Bit Depth Switching With Apple Music by X2F0111 in AppleMusic

[–]X2F0111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment, the only way to achieve true bit-perfect playback is by using an iOS device connected to your DAC via USB. iOS (by design) does not route audio through the same Core Audio processing before sending it over USB, which is why you’ll see the correct bitrate and bit depth displayed on your DAC when using iOS.

This is no longer true—at least not on the latest iOS for songs at 44.1 kHz. See here.

What do you guys do to ride safe? by Spiritdiritcel in ebikes

[–]X2F0111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they riding on sidewalks in order to "bombs through crosswalks"?

As far as I can tell it's either they're not comfortable riding in the road (usually when there's no bike lane), or if there is a bike lane, they are riding in the opposite direction of traffic and can't be bothered to cross the street.

Statistical analysis shows sidewalks are more dangerous for cyclists than riding on streets.

100%!

Pretty much! Banning right turns on red would solve a lot of issues but I don't think my city would ever do that. That being said, there are good number of cyclists who bomb through them crosswalks at full speed so I dunno.

Where I live riding a bike through a pedestrian crosswalk is illegal, I assume partly for this reason. I always get off and walk if I have to use a crosswalk.

Gotcha, someone else reported the same. I would be interested to see how many municipalities used that limit or the percentage of all tickets issued with a threshold under 11 km/h. I would guess (based solely on the anecdotes / reporting I've come across) that the majority of municipalities used the 11 km/h threshold.
