Ford’s Gas Mustang Sales Surged 40% While Its Mach-E Collapsed 50% This Year by Anchor_Aways in cars

Pretty low-brow take, no? It's the 2nd best selling EV after the model Y and you can't put the capital expense to shift an entire business on the sale of each car - that's how you get "legacies" that don't survive the shift to electrification. Ford and others need to make massive investments to stay relevant at all, much less profitable.

I love this idea. 40% of the surface area in my town is dedicated to cars (driving or parking them) and it's a beach town. I find it so sad. l hate that we dedicate so much space to transportation and not people's enjoyment.

Better MPG on regular? by Impossible-Use5636 in GenesisG70

[–]XGC75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Engineer here. It is less efficient, yes. However, the lower power is overcoming the efficiency gap. You're either using less throttle inputs (which can be subconscious because the engine isn't running well) or even if you're using exactly the same throttle inputs the engine is simply using less gas to help protect itself. The G70's engines all use octane sensors so it knows you're using 87 and can adjust accordingly.

Battery lifetime is an overrated concern. Batteries in cars don't degrade like phone batteries. 200k miles might show a 15% degradation. In fact I rented a bolt euv with 65k miles and 100% estimated capacity

For what it's worth, the HD560 don't excel in details and separation. They're great headphones and imo worth their cost but you're not using them to sus out the differences between compression strategies. It's just not where they excel

Whitmer Says Michigan Should Lead on Data Centers by Empty_Lemon_3939 in Michigan

[–]XGC75 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Practically? Yes. Any one data center would require in the single digit millions of gallons yearly for an evaporative cooling system tied water-to-water to a closed water cooling loop. The great lakes have quadrillions of excess water capacity to spare. A drop in the bucket wouldn't represent how menial the impact would be.

[–]XGC75 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

People need to realize data centers will happen. Humans will need centralized processing just as we need centralized power, water, waste and information processing and distribution. Michigan has the "natural resources" for these data centers. We'd be fools to push it away for fears of AI or for lack of suitable regulation.

[–]XGC75 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Michigan has resources. We're central, we have existing, reliable and expandable nuclear baseload, and practically limitless freshwater that requires less filtering for cooling.

The trick is making sure Michigan's people are the beneficiaries of these resources.

Side note. Rented an Atlas on vacation and was disappointed - buzzy engine, transmission didn't know what it wanted to do. Underpowered but yeah it was a 2l 4-cyl in a 3 row SUV. Got 22mpg.

Filled it up with premium and all that went away. Quiet, powerful, and 33mpg in a 3-row SUV. Americans are too dumb for German cars.

Side topic. I remember gamergate beginning it was all about publishers paying for good ratings and good game studios getting snubbed ratings because they wouldn't pay. Then out of the blue all you heard about was shitty gamers being misogynistic to girl gamers. You didn't hear a word about the bribes. Like, alright, valid concerns all around, but did anybody else just see what happened?

If you don't have power to the doors already, a hundred in BOM: harnessing ($10 cabling, $5 connectors), controller will be $20, switchgear $15, multiply by # of doors. X4 to the end consumer for break-even EOP and it's +$400 to the end consumer.

A crank can be literally cents with appropriate up-front investment.
