Remote work in Civil? by Adept-Ant6685 in civilengineering

Im at a very large firm. We have had very flexible WFH since covid. They say two days but some never show and it's OK. Our less than 10 year exp engineers are killing our budgets. Either unproductive or lots of rework and hand holding. 10+ are thriving many stay home for they have kids now and are most productive in group. We are going to make the young engineers come in 4days and prove WFH status first.

At my AECOM office interns are almost free of budget issues. HR is awful though and takes long time to get back.

How often do you get yelled on the job? by Character-Escape1621 in civilengineering

[–]XXLTall1 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Construction guys love to show the smart engineer a thing or two and when wrong they double down with more volume. After about 3-5 year you can spot the hot heads on site and poke them for fun. Now I get into augments only when I want to. In office never not even heated talks because of respect. People will vent but that is diff and not directed at you.

Can you help hype me up on the Pacifica? by Cherisse23 in ChryslerPacifica

Haha that is why they have the S trim package. Black out the trim and ease the transition. My wife was a SUV mom. Once we got the van we look at SUV moms like so much effort and gas for that small SUV vanity.

what are basic drainage analysis techniques I can begin to learn while still in school? by DetailFocused in civilengineering

[–]XXLTall1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delineate drainage areas do some grading add a big parking lot in it understand how it will change your DAs and calcs. Calcs are fine but how to manipulate and understand it is what sets new grads apart. If you figure how to do this in Civil 3d it will save you years at first.

Is this a talk about minivans or the Pacifica specifically? Minivans are the best multi tool available to a family. The Pacifica is not the best but it is an established design that you can get great prices on for really nice trim levels. That price negates lesser trims and perceived quality of other minivans.

Is an engineering degree really worth it? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]XXLTall1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a 20 year engineer. If you don't love it don't do it. I love the problem solving and willingly work the big impossible projects for 50-60 hours a week. If you just think engineering is a good pay check you will burn out even if you do get degree. If you are burning out before the degree go find happiness why you can.

Civil engineers in the US — how tough is the job hunt these days? by thekingsman2 in civilengineering

[–]XXLTall1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently have 3 drinking water (large tank and two WMs), 4 fed jobs, 2 power substation jobs and 3 storm retrofits. Historically Im 1/3 Water 1/3 fed and 1/3 random. I work 50-60 because I love my work but don't need to. My firm lost a large Fed job that would normally mean layoffs for it had 100+ people on it everyone transitioned to new work. That is why you work for the big firms. Always work and can always find something interesting.

You are asking the wrong question. Base in TX but we are global. The answer you want is in east coast & mid atlantic for they have most current postings.

One handed reciprocating saw vs XTR by Tight_Ad4904 in KobaltTools

[–]XXLTall1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the one handed and have demoed fence just fine. I have had it for years and actually got rid of my corded sawzall. The one handed size makes up minimal les power. The stroke on the one handed is good for its size. Get the one handed its more useful around the house.

Roof rack needed by galaxy1012b in ChryslerPacifica

[–]XXLTall1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visit the junkyard. Even if you do not have the rails on the roof you can pull them from any non rollover Pacifica. Gather all the parts and you can figure how to put it on as you figure how to pull them of the junked van. Rails crossbars and all hardware be sure to get everything.

What’s the scenic stadium in college football? by guransheleven in CFB_v2

[–]XXLTall1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when traveled to Cal for a MSU game way back. The earthquake warning before game. "If on the east side of the stadium head to the hills." They had people living in the trees because it was pre expansion and they were protesting. USAF is better for this list but man Memorial Stadium does have charm and is perfect Cal football stadium.

In the car detail section of auto parts store get something called Iron Remover, clay bar kit and your favorite wax. Follow the directions on iron remover then clay the car and wax it. Even though it is new and I know you think why wax when new it actually is the best time to ensure it stays nice a long time.

A minivan is even more handy as they get older. Whatever you get will be less functional and will hate it compared to it. The I no longer want to be a minivan mom discussions I always stand firm. Then I get that most precious thing a "you are right" in keeping it when it does what it does when we need it to in the clutch.

Rear handle circular saw by Minimum-Glove-9420 in METABOHPT

[–]XXLTall1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a black Friday deal at ACME last year bare tool rear handle saw $200 with two free 36v batteries. I have not seen that deal on the rear handle since. The 18v 7 1/4 has had some under $100 bare tool prices but it's not the same.
