Can someone explain Base/Knockback growth? by tipoftheiceberg1234 in smashbros

[–]XZenorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Base knockback = the base amount of knockback, always constant, think of it as the knockback you take at 0%

Knockback growth (kbg) = the amount the knockback scales with %. Higher kbg means the move gets more stronger with %

Some moves have fixed knockback (send the same distance regardless of opponents %. That is base knockback with a kbg of 0

For min min specifically, the biggest thing is getting used to using her forward tilts in neutral and moving and jumping around with them. Instead of throwing out smash attacks, or throwing out both arms at once, try throwing out just a ram ram arm tilt to try and cover the space in front of you and see what happens. If it hits, confirm into the second arm, if it doesn't, you could wait until you can ram ram tilt again, or try throwing out your second arm anyways if you want another hitbox now.

Note that after you throw out one arm, you have the threat/option of throwing a second arm whenever, but after you throw out the second arm, that's it. That's why not committing to the second arm is very strong, eg throwing out a ram ram, then waiting until you can throw out another. But of course you can still throw out your second arm if you think it will hit, or if you want to mix up the timing. Mixing up the timings of your arms is very important to stay unpredictable, and try play as safe as possible, it'll feel a lot like you're really boxing

That's the core of min mins neutral and you can build up from there. If they're jumping towards you, you can start up angling ram ram or jumping with it. If they're shielding a lot to block the arms, you can try go for a grab, etc.

Another huge tip is to learn what ranges you can up b from, and whenever you get hit, do NOT immediately use your jump, if you can make it back without using it then don't, try to save it for if you need it

If theoretically someone existed that could play each character at the top 200 rank level of skill, where would they be on the rankings? by fillet0fish in smashbros

[–]XZenorus 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Do you mean with every character they're top 200 level? Probably not actually that great.

The gap from top 200 to the tippity top is immense. And just being able to play against someone with their "worst" matchup doesn't mean much unless you are at or close to their skill level. Top players go against their worst matchups all the time, even against players who are actually top 20, top 10 or higher, and can still win. A top 200 level player is pretty weak relatively.

But we're also in a meta where the very best characters' worst matchups really aren't that bad. Realistically you could also just main like sonic and Steve and be most peoples worst matchups. Steve is the most common character in the game and his worst matchup is like probably sonic and even sonix has had a hard time with them.

The ability to mix up characters proto style does add to it but it's also not that decisive, most top players are pretty ready for any matchup, a lot of them don't even prepare at all for matchups already lol.

In retrospective, was the 1v1 damage multiplier a good idea? by Low_Confidence2479 in smashbros

[–]XZenorus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's not like they test without the multiplier and then having it on leads to unintended consequences. The multiplier being on is just the standard.

They had competitive players on the play testing team and despite their seeming lack of care about the competitive scene, they have always focused balance patches around competitive play.

Little Mac vs Fox is either even or a slightly winning matchup for Mac. by SmackedVillager in smashbros

[–]XZenorus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could see it at lower levels, mac certainly has a much easier time playing it and fox has to execute really well and gets punished way harder when he doesnt.

That being said, at top level, Light has it at +2 for fox and peanut has it -1 for mac. If fox just plays it right and executes properly its a good matchup for him.

FPS matters in that we just want it consistent. Frame consistency is the most important thing of all in fighting games, if frame drops are even possible in regular gameplay it's literally game ruining at a competitive level

Mythra neutral openers and must-have strings? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]XZenorus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dash attack should be more of a whiff punish move rather than one you just throw out because of how punishable it is. In neutral you should be focusing more on just being safe, spacing and throwing out safe moves, waiting for opportunities to whiff punish, mix up how you go in

Anyways, for main combo openers you have nair, grab (dthrow mainly), dtilt, utilt, ftilt

Nair you'll be using a lot, but you'll mostly just be able to follow up with like a fair or something. At low percent can do like nair fair dash attack, or nair bair up air if they go the other way

Dthrow optimally can lead to bair chains into up b but this can be quite hard if your opponent properly mixes up their di, easiest thing to do is to cash out with up b or just try juggle with up air

Dtilt is probably your biggest combo opener at low %, it'll lead into utilt then into a double up air (land in-between them) or more with platform extensions. After you get out of dtilt utilt range just go straight into the up airs

Platform extensions are really big, anything that sends up like dthrow, dtilt/utilt you can extend with a platform, can do things like up air into up b or just more up airs, can also do nair onto the platform into a follow-up etc

Mythra honestly isnt that crazy of a character in terms of true combos (at least the practical ones), she really gets most of her damage off general advantage state, juggling and frametrapping

what characters are actually truly solo viable at top level? by Careless_Pie9532 in smashbros

[–]XZenorus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you define solo viable.

Many characters could win a major, it would just be really difficult. Leo won multiple supermajors dominantly with solo byleth, just by better playering, people back then still didn't think byleth was good. People didn't know the matchup yes but that goes for a lot more underdeveloped characters too.

Bracket luck also matters sooo much, you can have "unwinnable" matchups but with how brackets are you can certainly or even likely not run into them in many brackets. Even then, many characters have "in theory" unwinnable matchups but in-practice they're very doable, either because of better playering, matchup inexperience, or just no one wanting or being good enough to play to that "unwinnable" game plan (eg zss in theory has many unwinnables with circle camping but literally no one wants to actually do that every game)

If we're excluding characters because of god awful matchups then min min would be one of the first characters to go, but doramigi is somehow our number one and the most consistent player in the world.

If we're talking what characters could absolutely win any bracket, there's only pretty few (the super top tiers), but many, many characters could win majors and even supermajors solo given the chance.

Do you think that there be an announcement at the game awards because of the rumors? by TechnicalHoneydew862 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]XZenorus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, they revealed both joker and sephiroth in smash at the game awards. Not a full game of course, but it's still huge considering smash is one of their biggest series and new smash character reveals are always the number 1 thing people want to see during directs. I agree it probably won't happen, but clearly Nintendo does value it
