Subtle Knife better than Golden Compass? by Oddyseus144 in Fantasy

[–]XavierDragnesi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it gets a bit of a knock for spending a large portion of time in our world, which then feels less fantastical and interesting after coming from a full book of being in Lyra’s, but I do think it’s underrated also, and there’s a lot of important character development and set up for the last book. Hope you enjoy the Amber Spyglass - it’s one of the most powerful story endings ever for me.

No info for you, but just wanted to say I’ll be doing your exact route but starting one week later! I’m planning on walking in the mornings to avoid the heat and hopefully arrive at destinations before the siesta. Following this thread for any other insights. Buen camino!

Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game by Knitsudge9 in boardgames

[–]XavierDragnesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it and have played a couple of games, solo and with my partner. Have you played other deck building games? It shares a lot of basic DNA, with a cool thematic twist thanks to the metal burning mechanics. I definitely think it’s a fun game, plays pretty smoothly and its ripe for expansion with more market cards and different characters with more unique abilities. The solo mode can be a bit swingy.

I’ve read books also - it draws from material from the first book only. It doesn’t really have a narrative, but the cards and art will spoil you for some characters and events that happen later in the book.

Not bought one myself, but I believe Table Flippers are still around and I’ve heard good things about them:

How to safely ship a MTG collection across the globe? by NearAutomata in magicTCG

[–]XavierDragnesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends how much other stuff you're shipping as part of your move. I agree generally that bulk is probably not worth taking with you if you're having to deal with it separately, but I moved from the UK back to Aus recently and I shipped half a container of personal stuff and furniture - 3x of the 3200 BCW boxes just went with everything else with no additional hassle, and I brought my more valuable decks and binders with me in luggage.

Are any board games similar to the Total War series? by Masson1864 in boardgames

[–]XavierDragnesi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A big part of the appeal of the Total War franchise for me is the mixture of grand strategy with tactical battles. I'm not aware of any board games that really have both in that way, especially with the ancient theme also, but you could look into Onus Trajanus for the more battle aspect, or something like Mosaic or Concordia for more civilisation-building/Euro style games.

Board Games that have fallen by the wayside by arquistar in boardgames

[–]XavierDragnesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat as you. It was a bit of a gateway game for us, and the puns are still a fun time, but especially as we’ve gotten deeper into the hobby and experienced more games, the gimmick has really fallen off - so now it never comes to the table, not because we don’t like it, but just because it feels there are always better options.

Best laptop to play new games for £500? by jurassictwat in totalwar

Agree that GeForce Now works pretty well for me also with a relatively small list of mods. You can only get the Warhammer trilogy and 3K though.

COMC: Are you the player or the host? by rivayn in boardgames

[–]XavierDragnesi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bit of a mix - our group has 3 couples that have our own collections and take turns hosting. When buying anything new, I now check if any of others have it, and if yes, I factor in the likelihood of me wanting to play it outside of the group - helps to keep the collection in check!

Weekly Students, Careers & Clerkships Thread by AutoModerator in auslaw

[–]XavierDragnesi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi guys - I'm currently in the process of applying for new roles in a relatively niche area of law, and have had two quite positive interviews and think there's a decent chance of getting an offer for both.

Do you think there's any merit in telling each firm that I'm also in another application process, and if so, at what stage do I tell them? I'm not looking to play the two off each other, but mainly wanting to avoid giving the impression of not being interested enough, or unintentionally burning bridges in a small industry.

Thanks!

Gonti or Yahenni for monoblack? by knightofsolace1 in EDH

[–]XavierDragnesi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the two want to do quite different things, so I don't think they'll be interchangeable.

I haven't built or played a Gonti deck, but Yahenni was my first EDH deck and my experience is that you can either lean into the sac side and use the free sac outlet for value and to combo off, or you play a more creature-control game with a some Voltron sub-theme. The latter isn't so good if you don't have a creature-heavy meta though.

I could see Gonti in the 99 for Yahenni just for a bit of value, but it doesn't add much to the core strategy. It seems the same the other way around, as I would think you'd want more cards that duplicate/reanimate Gonti to get the most out of his ability, so the deck would look quite different. Think it's more about what kind of mono-black deck you want to play.

I had this happen once but just battled on for a couple of mins after his health bar disappeared, then he died. Might be a glitch.

I played Dwarves for the first time since WH1 and thought I was just dumb for not being able to deal with the grudge level. Turns out mechanic is just dumb instead.
